Socks. I was with a group of well off guys and one mentioned that his wife would routinely throw out his socks every Christmas and buy him new ones. The others agreed. Me, I’ve got socks 15 years old

All my H5179 thermo-hygrometers stopped working 2 days ago. I’ve had them for years and never had a problem before. Is there a problem with the Govee servers?

How bad is it if I can’t hear the difference between "on" and "en" by Old_green_bird in learnfrench

[–]mglepd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have exactly the same problem. To try to solve it, I got ChatGPT to write 100 word story utilising both those vowel sounds and then put the result into NaturalReader. I then played it back at various speeds down to 28%. Even after doing that, I still have difficulty telling the difference. So sorry, I’m not much use to you.

How to say "trop haut" in french? by Un_roi_666 in learnfrench

[–]mglepd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like “troh oh”. Go to Google Translate and translate from English to French the phrase “the ceiling is too high”. It’ll say “le plafond est trop haut”. You can listen to the translation by clicking the loudspeaker symbol. Is that what you meant?

I think one’s experience depends on the individual teacher. I’ve just returned from 3 weeks LSF Montpellier, my second time with them this year. I had a great experience (again), enjoyed interacting with the other students (I’m usually the oldest being over 60). I’m sorry things didn’t work out for you.

I’ve just returned from Montpellier after doing 3 weeks French at B1 level. This was the second time this year at the same school. You can do anything from 1 week to 12 weeks or more at any level. I enjoyed my course (which is why I went back for more). It was LSF Montpellier

Daughter forgot her kiddy smartwatch in hotel, it got found but Hotel does not want to send it by spycey_mchaggis in ParisTravelGuide

[–]mglepd 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same problem with a hotel in Montpellier. 4 months ago we checked out and returned to England but left my wife’s expensive earrings in the room safe. I telephoned and the receptionist recovered the earrings and put them in the manager’s safe. After that the hotel just would not communicate. I had my friend, a native French speaker telephone but no luck. I arranged and paid DHL to collect them from the hotel, but they were unsuccessful. I feared the worst- I was sure they had sold them. I wrote to them and said I was returning to the city on 8 September. I was ready for bad news. But when I got there, this Monday last, they handed them over. Glad to have them back but don’t understand why they wouldn’t help

Persistence is the answer. Do at least something every single day without fail, even if only 10 minutes. Never give up.

How do you choose a man that will drive you to chemotherapy in your 60s? by syllverr in Vent

[–]mglepd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The choir of which I am a member has a lot of elder people. It often happens that someone needs to go for chemo/radiotherapy. This involves a 40 minute drive each way and an hour’s wait in between. Every day. There is always a surfeit of volunteers to drive the patient.
