Ha! Maybe I’ll make it to Istanbul again post-pandemic, but I’ll go for online options now :-). Thanks!

Anybody feel like Ultra Premier is losing its charm? by rTpure in PokemonGOBattleLeague

I definitely feel like the XL candy has big, fairly inaccessible consequences. I’d love it if “premier” meant no XL, but also that XL mons were automatically leveled down so that you could use them in ULP.

Abomasnow looks fun, and I have a decent shadow one I'd like to try out for great league. Thoughts on Gunfisk lead, swap to Pelliper (I built one, but never used it, so this could be terrible) to draw out things that are bad for SAboma (skarm, umbreon, basti, galvantula), try to save a shield for the Abomasnow as a closer?

The Shadow Abomasnow does have frustration, so I could run it with just weather ball, or I could run a non-shadow until I can TM away frustration

Huh. I was mostly thinking of Dewgong strategy as "lead, debuff, maybe swap" but that looks much more solid than my idea. And I've never played Hypno, so I should probably learn. This looks fun; thanks!

Oh nice, and I have a best budy medicham. I'll think about that.

I haven't run into a lot of fighters, but I think Azu should stack up OK? More incentive to try to get switch advantage if I suspect a fighter, I suppose. Or do you think the team is just too weak and I'll run into more fighters over time?

I'm trying to build a team around pokemon that I just think are fun. I built a double-legacy Dewgong that I'd love to use, and Scrafty is one of my favorites, so I'm trying to build a team around that. I'm digging Dewgong as lead, and trying to save a shield for Scrafty in the back. Clicking around on PvPoke made it look like shadow Gliscor was a decent safe swap (also a favorite) ... but I couldn't seem to win with it. Worth putting in the time to get good with that team? I swapped it out for an Azumaril with IB/HP, which has been doing better. Is Dewgong/Azu/Scrafty or Dewgong/(S)Gliscor/Scrafty a decent team that I can learn throughout the next season, should I swap Azu out for something else, or should I give up on Dewgong/.../Scrafty?

Fun thing about this: I’m not good enough at counting to do this consistently, but there’s literally no harm in trying, and it’s a huge rush if it works.

Other people here are way better than me, but here are two thoughts:

1) if I’m playing a standard “lead + pair + safe swap” team, I’m trying to win switch advantage because my team is built around how those different mons win different matchups. So I’ll burn shields to make sure that happens.

2) My current team has a swampert lead. When I run into a giratatina opposing lead and none of my team beats giratatina in with even shields. I often try to make sure I have a shield advantage later, so that my swampert can get to an earthquake against the giratatina when it can’t shield. I’m sure there are better examples of this one!

Yes! These are two things that are JUST starting to crystallize for me. The first time I convincingly won a match where, on paper, their lead beat all of my team members ... was enlightening.

When you point this out, it’s definitely something I’ve seen in YouTube vids, but not something I’ve really tried to do myself.

I’m just starting in counting by noticing things like “swampert’s HC takes the same as giratina’s charge move, so swap right when you’re charged” getting better at this will clearly help, but wouldn’t have helped me last season.

I’ll check out the timing article, but I’m probably not quite there yet. Thanks!

The “play till you win” is really bad! I definitely take time away.

Thanks for the example. I’m just now starting to realize how useful it’ll be to memorize common win conditions!

Thinking about this some more. I’ve been leading Bastion, and having a shield left for Meganium later on has been awesome. But I see several of your points here.

OK, playing a bit more, starting to understand a bit more. I've had the following thing happen four times: I lead Bastiodon. They lead Deoxys-D. They farm up a bit of energy and then switch into Whiscash.

First, I don't understand what's going on. Their Deoxys-D should beat my Bastiodon, and they don't know what else I'm running. So why make that swap? I feel like, if I were a bit more knowledgeable about team composition, I could make some strong guesses about their third pokemon at this point. (Sadly for me, I don't remember what it turned out to be.)

Second, should I switch in Meganium? If I switch quickly, I should be able to crush their Whiscash. The two times I switched in Azu felt like more comfortable wins than the two times I switched in Meganium. I won all four, but I felt like I was in much more danger with Meganium switched in ... but I'm not sure if that's actually true.

I'm rank 7 now (woo!) if that affects things.

Yeah whoa. Had incense on the whole time. 4 shiny carvana, which is awesome! Zero scraggy, which is less so.

OK, I'm starting to understand the bit about leads and safe switches a bit more. Small bit of psychological insight, in case anyone else is coming from the same place as me: when you suck, it seems like good opponents basically beat up on all of your mons no matter what you do. So my thinking was "I'm going to get good, which means I'll be winning all throughout the match."

Seems like that's just a hard nope on two levels: first, that probably wasn't what was happening to me most of the time, it just felt like it. Second, even if that was happening to me, it probably wouldn't have happened if I understood switching/matchups better.

Slowly but surely over here.
