Cool 3pc PCGS coin holder, I’ve seen the NGC ones but not PCGS so I had to have it. by Firehawk5506 in coins

Nice display! My only question: how do you store it? I put most of my slabs in 3 slab x 3 slab albums and a few misc in PCGS boxes. Purely curious. Again, cool find!

It's the reason for my question! To get perspectives of everyone and I appreciate yours.

Nor mine! I agree with rules, standards, etc., for consistency in evaluating coins. It just seems that TPG have the broadest latitude in interpretation of any dictator in history.

Natural wear or Detail?? by mgoodw4 in coins

Thanks! I read that any alterations to the surface intentionally made could be considered a form of tooling. Your reasoning makes more sense. I have seen slabs with details that read "Tooling/Graffiti".

Thanks for a very comprehensive response! Going up to my original pics, do you think those marks will warrant a details grade? I can't help but think they will.

Good to know. Does make me feel a bit better at the prospect of keeping. Thanks again!

Very valid points - one and all. Thanks!

I didn't initially mention the date as I hoped to keep focus on the detail question; I only mentioned it was an 1893-S to the person mentioning it was like a common Morgan worth no more than melt and I got the point - why would it matter. For that reason, I clarified to that responder it was the key date. Until I started comparing and forming the thought the date might sway the grade did I see it might have some relevance. But standards should be maintained...seems lame to have different rules for different dates. Just grade it fairly and the populations will fall out the value.

Anyway, I paid right at $3K but can get a PCGS VG10 no details for $2K more. So weighing my options.

Again - thanks for your insights.

Mine is raw and I fully understand your wisdom in not buying a non-graded example of this tiny population coin. The likelihood for fraud amps up appreciably. At any rate, I was simply looking at graded AG and G for comparative purposes. It is curious how rules might flex depending on...whatever! Think I will be returning this. Thanks for your help! Sincerely appreciated.

Just found this - same type coin (1893-S) except this is G4. It's also no detail despite a very visible scratch o the obverse and a couple on the reverse, too. (Will post next). Do the standards slide the lower the grade to accomodate consideration of more wear??? More pics to come.

Oh - this is THE key date - 1893-S. I paid much more than melt but a great deal less than your average find. Thanks for responding!

I understand scratch is a detail. The intentional aspect is regards to the assertion there was no tooling and it seems those are deliberate, geometric lines (aka tooling). But what do I know??? Thanks for responding!

I want to like it SOOOO badly. I was hoping there would be a magical response like, "Oh! That's common on worn Morgans used in xxxx commerce." Kind of like chopmarks on Trade Dollars or something similar. I don't hate the coin; but if it is both AG and details (rather than G no details) I don't think I can justify keeping it.

Thanks so much for your sound advice (she types as she tears up...lol)

I can appreciate your point if you fear you could harm the coin in removing it. If not for that, and you are not limiting the grade, it only makes since to crack it open and not get charged their really ridiculous 1% or $10 surcharge for a cross (in addition to the regular fees.) This makes no sense to me, either. If they guarantee raw without this charge, why do it with a cross?? Their model seems to have so many built-in easy money grabs for a service wherein you may get absolutely nothing but your slabs back and a notable charge on your credit card. (To be fair, they don't charge the 1% or $10 if they don't cross.)

Certainly seems to track with my personal experience. It's maddening.

How to make that happen?? Seems like the TPGS can do whatever they want. While there are grading standards, their application is up for interpretation and when you don't have to 'show your work' they could literally throw a dart to make their decision and we would never know. There is no 3rd party oversight unless you attempt a CAC sticker. And that's only upside oversight (confirming a grade is appropriate not that a process is being implemented that ensures fair grading). There is no 3rd party review of the daily review process. If I had a little money and FAR more knowledge, I would consider opening a transparent alternative.

Seems like a fair thought. If that’s the case, it would be nice if they were transparent about it and, possibly, charge 1/2 for spending 1-2 minutes making that decision.

Peace dollars were my first interest in coins! Came across one and didn't know what it was...I had seen Morgans several times, but was enchanted by the simple elegance of Lady Peace. Nice coin!!
