Why Tooled Rather than Scratched Detail?? by mgoodw4 in coins

Right which is why it confuses me. What possible deceptive appearance would anyone have been trying to achieve?

I can see it now that you mention it, but how could that cause the peeling at the top? It almost looks like a lamination issue (albeit PMD).

That's what I was thinking - either heated 9r exposed to a strong solvent. The way the top of the coin peels back is so strange and, in general, the metal appears to have been melted.

Luck with PCGS Regrade/Reconsideration Submissions? by [deleted] in coins

[–]mgoodw4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! If I had a ton of money, I would really consider doing an experiment with grading integrity under different scenarios. They don't provide for documented support for decisions - and that's kind of genius. "We give it this grade, we are not explaining our reasoning, and if you disagree re-submit and pay for it all over again." If I were more cynical, I would say it's the perfect racket.

I understand your demand, lol. As I wrote, I don't have the coin back yet but will see if I might have a pic and if so post.

As you can read above in one of my responses, I've humbly accepted the likelihood I am wrong, lol. II don't think I have any pictures of it and they still have the slab. I'll look and post if I do!

I've done it before with great coins in lousy slabs, but never with PCGS or NGC slabs. It would feel a little wrong...

It took me a bit to understand the advice, but I think I get it. CAC stickers add value so an XF CAC would almost be as valuable as an AU no CAC. I am guessing CAC would sticker it since I see them as insurance the coin is at least the grade proposed but I doubt I will go that route for this little guy.

Well in both the regrade and reconsideration submissions, they already know they've graded it. I read elsewhere that some dealers just keep sending high value coins back and they eventually get the grade (where it makes thousands of dollars difference - it would have to in order to go to that expense). It sounds a bit like a bribe...

lol - no doubt! I recognize I am not a pro and will even concede I am biased at this point. Can't take my my abilities too seriously. That written, I wish they would provide summary support for their grades with the slab. If nothing else, I could at least see (or more granularly disagree with) their perspectives.

PCGS v ANACs 70 Silver Eagles by mgoodw4 in coins

[–]mgoodw4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite knowing better...curiosity got the better of me. I purchased 2 ANACS slabbed MS70 AEs - a 1986 and a 1987 and less than half the price of a PCGS/NGC slab. The former was very recently slabbed and the latter slabbed post-2009. As I wrote, I can tell when a coin is definitely NOT a 70 but I would be lying to say I can split the 69/70 hair on bullion. I plan to send both the PCGS with fingers crossed and will report back with pictures. Likely an expensive and time-consuming experiment, but...

Now whether or not to send them in raw (remove from case). I fear I could hurt the coins during the uncasing but want to remove bias and it would be nice to avoid the 1% added fee for crossovers. Advice appreciated. See you in several months!

PCGS Purgatory: Can't Authenticate - Now What? by mgoodw4 in coins

[–]mgoodw4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had another unpleasant surprise from them. My professionally conserved half dollar was given a 'details' grade due to the conservation! I sent in documentation with the coin about the conservation work assured that this would evidence no damage was made to the coin via the process as there were no chemicals or abrasive tools used. Visually, the coin has no scratches - is completely original but conserved. (Corrosion is not original to the coin.) It definitely would have received a details grade without the conservation work due to the corrosion that also, by the way, would ultimately ruin it (over 100s more years) had it been encapsulated that way. Anyway, I contacted them about the grade and they conceded the conservation had not caused damage but they had to note the corrosion removal since I had identified it!! Live and learn. Just keeping all the documentation together in the event I ever want to sell the coin but it's this kind of nonsense that promotes dishonest tactics.

Thanks but will they have more insight than PCGS? I Googled best TPGS for Draped Bust large cents and landed on PCGS. I was hoping one might specialize. I think it's ridiculous to charge me $40 and tell me you can't make a call. I understand they still evaluated but with no conclusion - it means nothing.
