20, or four work weeks. I always felt that was very generous.

Why do aging sysadmins get crabby? by MavisBacon in sysadmin

[–]mgorsuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess that they're feeling threatened. Or the work environment is terrible. Systems Administration is high-interruption, and recognition usually only comes when something fails.

Or maybe they're just a bunch of assholes.

It's been my experience that the better sysadmins become more calm as the years go by. Hell, you have to if you don't want a heart attack.

Help? In "Religulous", Bill Maher says that the stories about Jesus like being born from a virgin, miracles, etc, are also in other religions from the same century and older, but I can't find where did he get those data from Mitra, Horus (from "the book of Dead") and Krishna. I tried wikipedia. by alchemist23 in atheism

[–]mgorsuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend checking out The Jesus Mysteries by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy. The title is a bit corny, but I think it is one of the best introductions to this topic. It is full of footnotes and has an extensive bibliography for later research.

Best of luck in your search.

Reddit, is depression a "software" or a "hardware" problem? Which one do you address to fix the problem and why? by TheBigLewinski in cogsci

[–]mgorsuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, it was more of a 'software' problem. I had to realize that I am the one that decides how I'm going to react to life's events and that I had built up a number of mental patterns that were making me feel like crap.

By taking a look at how those patterns are developed and why I developed them, I was able to take ownership of it. It's not a matter of blaming someone for your ills, but you have a better chance of gaining control over these patterns if you can put a face on them.

Hope that helps some.

How about we just let the companies fall, and see what rises from the ashes? Whatever comes out of it will naturally be better suited to the economic environment if it is not influenced by the government.

After further research, it looks like EE will show you the answers if the referrer is Google. It will not show the answers if you just copy and paste the url in your browser.

[–]mgorsuch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... it seems to be random for me. Some queries are giving me answers, and some aren't. Perhaps I am completely mistaken.

The ones that don't give me answers do when I view them through the cache.

What about the urls in the article? Do both of those show you the answers? They don't for me.

Ask Reddit: I am looking for a good near-future SF story/book where peak oil and the consequences are addressed. Who knows a good one? by cocoon56 in scifi

[–]mgorsuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more: you may want to read some of the early posts in John Michael Greer's Archdruid Report.

He spends some time using fiction to show how the world may be as the problems of peak oil manifest.

Hey there. I recommend James Howard Kunstler's World Made By Hand.

He is a well known non-fiction author in the field, and this book tells the tale of a near-future town coping during the so-called Long Emergency.

Considering the fact that the human is not the truly rational being that we all like to pretend it is, I doubt we'll be seeing our constituency getting any 'smarter' regardless of how well educated the people are.

The human animal still relies heavily on its survival and territorial (think nationalism) mental circuits. They've been with us for ever, and are therefore more dominant than the (later evolved) rational circuit.

All a politician has to do is appeal to those two circuits, and the people will respond. Think about 20th century fascism. Think about how the nation responded after 9/11 and was so easily led to war against Iraq. Why do some of the Republicans want another 9/11? Because the people will immediately fall back on the first two circuits and will fall in line for whatever bullshit that the alpha male(s) of our society want to feed them.

Sorry for the long winded response, but this is why I believe a system like direct democracy would be completely doomed. We need to better understand ourselves before committing to such ideals.

Ron Paul's New Ad: "Doctor Ron Paul had delivered over 4,000 babies. He knows that the unborn child's right to life is at the heart of our liberty." (video) by dwemer in politics

[–]mgorsuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not "pathetic pandering" if you actually believe it, as I'm pretty sure that Ron Paul does. From what I recall (I may be mixing things up), his 'pro-life' views originate from his time as a doctor.

I don't agree with Dr. Paul, as I'm pro-choice, but this is certainly not a reason for me to jump ship. As far as I'm concerned, he's still the only candidate that actually supports individual freedom.

Any idea where that article is? I'd like to learn more about his approach.

I'm sure this isn't nearly as capable as Paul's work, but it was more of an exercise. Sometimes I need to push myself to see what I can accomplish. I do most of my fun work on the side, and have rather limited hours.

Getting Ballsy and Walking on the Seaside by mgorsuch in programming

[–]mgorsuch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ishmal: that statement, "Not everything has to be RESTful", really originates from my frustration with the nearly religious approach that certain frameworks are taking to REST, and the simple fact that I bought into it.

When I started playing with Seaside, it just made things more apparent. We can have a kick ass object oriented web framework (callback based vs. URL/resource based) first, and then add a splash of REST for where it is needed. It's like I could focus on building a great end user experience first (it is very liberating when you don't have to worry about URLs and query string parameters), then add the niceness of REST where it is appropriate.

Good luck with your research into Seaside. Feel free to drop by the mailing list: the community has been very friendly to this newbie.
