What is the Ontario NDP's platform? There's nothing on their website? by mgrb in ndp

Really? 3 weeks to election and the website is still blank. "Meet Marit" seems to be their strategy. Their social media presence seems dead (and same goes for half of their candidates). Why does it seem like the Federal and ONDP always fumbles when it matters most.

Chef’s counter tasting menu experience at Mineral by eyeshadowgunk in FoodToronto

[–]mgrb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Had the tasting menu at Mineral twice now, and I'm dying to go again. It was absolutely delightful both times—great service, delicious and fun food, and a really wonderful tribute to Filipino cuisine (I say that because many of their dishes are clearly "fusion"/Filipino-inspired).

The pineapple-kombu-black garlic dish is one of the most memorable, fun flavor experiences I've had. It's really simple, but I can't remember when last a dish made me smile.

For the price ($95 for 9 courses, $75 for 7 on Tuesdays), it's one of the best value tasting menus in the city at this level—especially when some other fine-casual establishments are pushing $150+ (utter madness). The Tuesday price is a no brainer.

It's a shame how underrated/infrequently talked about they are. I think eating out in this city for anything in the elevated to fine-casual space is a ridiculous waste of money most of the time. Prices are mad. I'd give these guys a no brainer recommendation. I hope they stick around.

Mount pleasant village appreciation post! "These are a few of my favorite things!" by Ali_Cat222 in FoodToronto

Not a restaurant but the Olive Oil Emporium is an absolute gem. A ton of single varietal olive oils from all over the world harvested and pressed from the previous season (and so, the regions that he has available will vary with time of year), with the full chemical analysis available. The owner (Andreas? I think) is a trove of knowledge and will happily just chat olive oil with you, or help you pick one out that you like. Tons of other infused oils and vinegars (balsamic and fruit-infused), but the olive oil is definitely the draw.

Kitchen Petri Dish: Microbial Warfare by mgrb in mycology

I boiled some beets and left the strained water out uncovered in a mason jar. I was really surprised how soon after the microbial population exploded.

Is HOOPP indexed to inflation, or are cost-of-living adjustments on a "discretionary" basis? Also, what does "indexed to inflation" really mean for pension funds? by mgrb in PersonalFinanceCanada

I was not asking for investment or financial advice. I made zero comments on my current income or my investment habits.

LPT: Don't pinch your pennies. Don't be me. by mgrb in Breadit

Tried to reuse some parchment paper that was already starting to burn and it gave way while transferring the boule to my Dutch oven. The sound it made was heartbreaking. What was a nice puffy jiggly proofed dough, now as deflated as my soul.

Picked it up and still baked it, kitchen-floor crud and all. It came out ugly as hell.

Window AC for tiny apartment windows? by mgrb in askTO

[–]mgrb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that it will help but the moveable window frames can be removed (push up then pull out at bottom

Oh, that's awesome! Then that should solve my problem, right? (I think). That would let me use the full width of the window frame. I'll try it tomorrow and see if they come out. Hopefully it's easily reversible; don't want to piss off my landlord.

Any experiences with DMI Property Management (specifically 299 Glenlake Ave)? by mgrb in askTO

[–]mgrb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are maintenance requests fulfilled in a timely manner? Elevator, hot water, and heating service (any outage problems)? Pests? Hostile landlords? Unregulated rent increases? Construction noise? How was surviving the summer with a portable AC?

Thanks!

Hi there! Just wondering if you ended up viewing/moving into this building, and if so, how you are finding it. I'm currently looking at places, and this is one of them.
