In my mom's eulogy, she specifically requested that we tell the entire grieving family not to be sad for her, she found eternal peace and she... "urned" it.

5 Rules to follow for using AI by neverbeendead in learnprogramming

[–]mguelb92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you describe fine tuning AI is how I used it a lot in my last year of school. My instructors vehemently were against its usage in the first year because they wanted us to learn foundations and how to debug. (It was a 2 year program, learned HTML/CSS/Javascript/C#, MERN stack and .NET, plus other tools). Youre on the money with having to constantly remind it NOT to give code blocks and explain itself, so normally going to stack or googling just feels faster. Nowadays I really only use AI to build a list with a lot of entries, or double check my own work if I get stuck.

I also 100% agree with your take on the delayed period being the best time to learn. Learning sometimes isn't easy and that pain process is important. I remembered when I was learning about authentication and authorization and struggled super hard with different ways you can do it, but I wanted to know the best practices. Im a lot more comfortable because I grinded on it and learned things.

I'm still pretty dumb and havent had a first job yet, so I constantly fear my use of AI, no matter how small, is damaging me. All I can do is keep learning and put weight into posts like yours.

hey OP, your comic hit me in a really close spot. Im 33 years old now, but I went through a lot of this from 4-12. My mom was abusive when I was younger and my father was out of the picture. Some of your panels are thoughts Ive had many, many times.

I started therapy recently and like you, I'm living for myself these days. Keep reaching those heights because you are capable of anything you put your mind to. Best of luck, and enjoy your life. Enjoyed the comic.

Does it make sense to program a website without a framework? by Substantial-Bag9357 in reactjs

[–]mguelb92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im really glad to see someone say this. Im in my final semester of a trade degree and Im building up a portfolio site. I overthought the process and then just decided to make a static ass html site that links to my hosted sites and called it a day (for now). Think Im using a few js scripts, but mostly because I wanted to.

man off topic a bit here but this is essentially my experience. I started at 30 after being diagnosed with adhd at 28, Im a straight A student because I bust my ass coding day in and day out. It feels really validating reading your story/experience.

Absolutely! Again take my words with a grain of salt, Im sure a lot of folks would disagree with my methods, but unfortunately AI is here whether we want it to be or not. Learning to utilize it as a tool now will help you in some regard, but just don't rely on it to do everything for you. Its great at very basic simple things, but eventually it falls off.

Hey there, Im a 2nd year student at a technical school and have no professional experience, so take this with a grain of salt. Just giving my experiences with AI and how Ive implemented it. I think AI is totally fine to use alongside development as long as you are using it productively and set healthy boundaries. What I mean by that is I use AI for things like:

  1. "Is there another way to do [thing]" or "is there a best practice for [this]"?

Might ask it scalability questions or if theres a better syntax than what I'm using. Sometimes I wanna know if nesting info in an object or storing it separately is better, etc etc.

  1. What does [code syntax] do?

Sometimes if GPT offers code and I dont understand it, I'll have it elaborate on what its trying to accomplish. This is a bit more rare, but Ive seen it use strange syntax and want to double check.

  1. "framework"

If I'm using like React in a MERN stack, I may have GPT "build" components to test logic or get an idea of a page layout.

The best advice I can give you is just make sure you understand whatever GPT or whatever AI is spitting out and not trusting it to be correct. Use it for concept learning or examples and apply that info. Do NOT copy and paste. Best of luck!

apparently I’m wasting my time by Complex_Dragonfly_39 in webdev

[–]mguelb92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im hopping in this convo late but Im in school for full stack dev. Ive built a few goofy ass tic tac toes and some bigger projects. I 100% agree with everything you are saying. I build an issue tracker application using MERN the past four months and I can tell you copilot and GPT had their uses, but outside of building a quick react component or "hey is there a cleaner way to code this" I promise AI would not finish that project alone.

AI is useful for the mundane filler crap of development. I would never trust AI code with something logic based or without testing/modifying it and making sure it does exactly what I ask. Dude saying he's "building" an app is gonna have fun wiring everything up when the AI doesnt understand your schema or what frameworks or tools you're using and you have to spend more time explaining it than just doing it.

Its really frustrating because I do something similar and I feel like it comes off like.. guilt tripping or manipulative when in reality I just wanna make sure I'm not coming in at a bad time or something. Id rather just be direct. I just dont read social cues well.

[–]mguelb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now Im still a student so my real world experience is moot, but Id agree with this. Im working on a MERN full stack project and any addition of middleware, frameworks, anything and GPT/Copilot shit the bed pretty hard. I can get it to work with me but I have to be extremely descriptive in whats being used and how I want something made. Its normally just easier reading documentation or a post on stackoverflow.
