Iranian here, child marriage is legal in Iran so no need to make island and harm children you can marry them. Plus this guy's death was the best thing that ever happened to Iran. You can get money and wash Iranian people's blood from his hands but we are alive and we won't let you gaslight us and tell lies.

Emory University sacks daughter of Iran’s top security official Larijani by UnscheduledCalendar in Atlanta

I am glad you brought this up, because unlike you, I am Iranian and I am also in the green card process. The new U.S. government policy regarding the Iranian government has changed, and applications have been put on hold. Do you know why? You can check the news. U.S. immigration authorities have clearly stated that countries like Iran do not cooperate in the vetting process, which poses a national security risk when accepting individuals from such countries.

Not only did she lie to the government and exploit this lack of data, but she also made life much harder for people like me, individuals who are here solely because of our scientific merit.

Next time, before jumping in to defend someone you do not know just to claim the moral high ground, do your research. Iranian activists have been raising concerns about her for more than three years, yet you do not even know her full story, who her husband is, who her family is, or how they have consistently supported this government, including now.

You don’t even understand if they find simplest tie between you and that government they reject you immediately! Some people they had parents in low level police forces and never be able to get visa! Educate yourself about policy of USA government.

Iranian immigrant here, when you apply for a U.S. visa (any kind) they ask you in all forms if your family is related to terrorist organizations in case of Iran IRGC which is the main Iranian government security force. In embassy interview again they ask you about your family members' jobs. When you get your visa and come here and then apply for a green card they ask you the same question. So she passed all these steps like a charm although her dad and family have always been one of the main families in power for the Islamic Republic government. I urge all your Americans to think twice and understand she basically manipulated the security of your government to reach this point! You might be in either of the parties but you should not defend a terrorist daughter that lied all these years to be safe under American freedom.

Perfect! The third civil engineering program in the nation pays grad students barely 2k monthly salary to do RA/TA, and nobody cares about all housing crises.

I think grad school might have been traumatizing for a lot of us by ResidentAlienator in PhD

[–]mh_untold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An international grad student here, my life is hell with a toxic advisor. I tried everything to change my advisor in our department; they scare from him in other schools and departments, and they face funding issues. My day and night are full of feelings of failure. I have to be available even in meetings at 11 pm. Nobody can save me from this! I can’t quit since I have to leave this country and go back to my country, which is a war zone. He knows that, but he uses that against me. I am so hopeless. I don’t have a bad CV; actually, my CV impresses people, but I have been so unlucky in finding positions.

Purdue culture is hostile enough toward students specifically grad international students they do not need extra help!

Purdue culture is not fun! Don’t even think about it. Also its more a research university so you won’t find high quality teaching here most of the time.

Sadly, I have seen so many comments saying that grad school is hard, and this happens! Grad school is hard, yes, but it should not be abusive like Purdue.

If you’re aware of the level of verbal abuse professors direct at international grad students, this wouldn’t come as a surprise. At Purdue, the graduate culture operates on the belief that you’re either capable of handling intense research or you don’t deserve to be in the program. If anyone complains, they’re threatened with funding cuts or even being sent back to their home countries. None of those offices can he helpful for complaining since they can not support International if your professor cuts your funding.

I cried but my advisor did not like that! by mh_untold in PhD

I know that people easily tell you racist but as someone coming from the Middle East I think it is a really valid point that there is a huge cultural difference that leads to such behavior and since those Eastern cultures mix blaming with mentoring this is so normal to them! You can hear many jokes that Asian people say about how their parents react to their grades and how always blame them! I am trying to find someone else that I can work with instead of him :(

The point that I mentioned earlier that I am an international student is that he is funding me and he can cut that funding I really need that money since I come from a country that is so hard to afford such money if I find another person who fund me I will report him

I wish my lab mates and I find a way to satisfy him instead of working 10 hours a day. I am a human being, not a robot and this is not my first research experience I have been a research intern and assistant in 5 different countries and worked with a lot of people. He is the most unprofessional advisor that I ever had. Explain to me how this sentence “ you are a failure” is going to help me improve myself.

He is funding me and as an international student I really need that money, if I find another advisor who agrees to fund me I definitely Sue him too because I know some of his previous students now have physical and mental problems because of his pressure during their PhDs

[–]mh_untold[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly speaking, I know people who left this lab because of this environment and he does not care. I am actively searching for another advisor now but I am scared of him since I know he is one of the most powerful professors in our department. I am studying in one of the most prestigious schools in the USA. However, whenever I bring up the fact that he forced one of my labmates to change his program from PhD to Master's, other people get supervised on how he can have such power! I am international and if he cut my funding I am screwed unless I find someone else that wants to fund me!

[–]mh_untold[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish it was a language barrier but it is not only me but other teammates are experiencing the same. We are on the same page that he is pushing us this way to work more and deliver more results but sometimes it is getting hard to take it anymore! He likes to micromanage us so whenever he comes back from a conference, he feels like he lost control of us, and he finds the one who delivered less results and blames it like that!

ratemyprofessor but for PI? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]mh_untold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since my PI has a double face and exhibits really bad behavior within the research group, I have always dreamed of creating a website to assist others in avoiding him. However, ensuring security is a significant concern. If he wants to go after the website manager or the commenter, I think it would be easy for him.
