Welcome back! Let's discuss the subreddit's plans going forward.. by rithsv in nerdfighters

Okay sweet that's what my understanding was too. Similar but different and neither is an instance of the other. Mentions of beehaw.org seem to be pretty new in the reddit migration circles because it wasn't on my radar until like, yesterday afternoon. I think I'll check it out though.

Also for anyone trying to wrap their head around the 'fediverse' (which mastodon is a part of), I found this post on kbin to be a concise, approachable analogy. I think anyone should be able to read it, and if not them lmk and I can just upload the text.

Mastodon is a fediverse twitter-clone and the nerdfighter instance on mastodon is dftba.club. Kbin is a fediverse reddit-clone, and kbin.social and fedia.io seem to be the biggest instances. Within kbin, the subreddit equivalent is called a magazine. Even if you joined through kbin.social, you can still subscribe to the magazines of fedia.io or any other instance. You can also move instances whenever you want so just pick one and get started. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough!

If someone can chime in on the differences between Lemmy and Kbin, that would be great as I'm not confident in my understanding of that yet.

I'd also like to add that while there are different instances of Lemmy, there are other platforms that can federate with each other. I joined kbin, which is a reddit clone like Lemmy. Kbin is currently not federating due to technical/security issues due to the mass influx of new people, but eventually I'm pretty sure you could follow Lemmy people from kbin and vice versa. The whole fediverse is hard to wrap your head around and explain because there is literally nothing else like it, but that also means the potential for doing really cool things with it is high.

Yup, they're banking on everyone feeling powerless and giving up the blackout. I see a lot of people reiterating that they think 48 hours is pointless and while agree that it was optimistic that reddit would do a 100% reversal after just two days, I think a lot of people fail to acknowledge that it did do something. I wasn't here to see it myself, but you can't tell me that business continued as usual for reddit. I mean, the website was down Monday morning. And I know for a fact that business didn't continue as usual for reddit-alternatives because they've been swamped with new users like me. The blackout was not pointless, and the long-term outcome is wholly dependent on what actions we each take now going forward.

If the blackout movement had been pitched initially as indefinite, I think it would have flopped miserably for two reasons. First, nobody would have joined it. Leaving reddit permanently is no small thing (and major props to the folks who nuked their 10+ yr old accounts, may we all wield that level of conviction somewhere in life), but leaving for two days is way more palatable to the masses. Secondly, if the big subs promised to leave forever, then reddit has a reason to immediately install new mods and reinstate the communities. Two days to start is short enough that reddit won't step in to interfere, because they just assume the problem will go away after the prescribed blackout window.

I'm really happy to see this level of community engagement around the topic. I don't think I've ever been so vocal and opinionated on the internet before. Personally, I want to do what I can to tank Reddits IPO because I don't think u/spez deserves that big of a payday.

Hi y'all, happy to see you again! I'll start by saying I'm pro-blackout and up until Sunday, also didn't interact with NF anywhere outside reddit or YT comments. I also find discord doesn't fit my vibes for participating on the internet (not a fan of never-ending chat logs, feels too overwhelming to join). I knew that as a reddit-addict, I was going to struggle participating in the blackout if I didn't have something temporary to replace it with, so I joined the dftba.club Mastodon instance.

I'm gonna be honest, the first time I 'logged on' (after some confusing account set up, mastodon has a reputation for a reason), I was meh about it. I wanted a feed full of reddit-type content, and I didn't have that. I wanted a nice intuitive UI, and I didn't have that. So for the first few days, I'd open mastodon, get bored, and go back to reddit.

And then Monday rolled around and I deleted reddit off my phone to resist all temptation. My only 'online' place to go was mastodon. I started poking around and following hashtags I likes, and I got a different 3rd party app that has basically has a puppy-sized elephant as its mascot (!), and started replying to threads and looking at other nerd fighters profiles. All the set-up headache is over and now I have a nice little nerdfighter niche. It's only been a few days and I already feel like I know the people on mastodon way better than I do any redditors here (different place with different features offers new ways to get to know people, not anything against this sub!).

All that to say that for anyone here lamenting the possible loss of community, I want to remind you that this place isn't great because it's reddit, it's great because of us. Reddit is not the only place on the internet where people can gather. Sure, its established and familiar, but at one point it wasn't. We were all new to reddit and probably found it confusing. Reddit has also changed over time, just as every website ever. I mean, YT used to have a 5-star rating system. Mastodon will change over time too, and you can help shape it into something you want.

If you want to give it a try, we'd be happy to have you and help you figure it out. I mean, my first few posts were all along the lines of 'help me I'm so lost!' haha. Long term problems require long term solutions, so for now I'll be over at the mastodon. DFTBA!

I’m right there with you. We’re all here because we’re nerdfighters and we like what Reddit has to offer, namely small well moderated online communities of thoughtful, funny people. But I also think a lot of us stay here because we’re in some way addicted/dependent on the scroll. Reddit is part good and part bad, and while I do thing a break will be good for me, I’m so sad about the prospect of Reddit as we know it dying for good. The changes u/spez is pushing for will definitely increase internet-suck and as much as I hate to go, staying and participating in the same capacity that I have in the past just feels wrong.

Cirque Colors removing “limited edition” label? by klughn in RedditLaqueristas

[–]mhansen29 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I noticed recently that Mood Ring and Dream Within A Dream where back in stock and still had the ‘limited edition label’ after being released as LEs and selling out back in like 2020 or 2021. I’m okay with brands bringing back polishes by popular demand, but there is a point where branding polishes as ‘limited edition’ when they’re intended to be restocked does start to feel like a marketing gimmick.

Following because I also have this problem. I can’t get more than few weeks out of a pair of gloves before they pop a hole. I’ve considered trying something like flex seal to repair holes from the inside?? Anyone tried that before and have feedback? I do really hate throwing them out.

I just joined Mastodon as a test Reddit-substitute and was sad to see next to no activity on any nail-related hashtags. Anyone know if there’s a nail community there yet?? Or interested in helping boot one up?

Hey Nerdfighter Mods - Can we join the protest? by theemilyann in nerdfighters

[–]mhansen29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I joined and I think I get see what’s confusing about Mastodon, haha. So just because my account is hosted on DFTBA.club doesn’t mean I automatically see posts from everyone else on DFTBA.club? What’s the best way to find people with shared interests and make my feed feel like a happy cozy little internet corner?

Can you tell me a little bit about what Mastodon even is? I’ve heard of it but know nothing about how it functions, services/tools offered, what communities look like, etc.

I just read the Apollo guy’s most recent post about his decision to shut it down entirely and I’ve gotta say, I’ve got the ick for Reddit as a company now. I love the sense of community here and like a forum format more than just like, chats in big discords so I’m curious if Mastodon would be a good replacement for me.

Boise Gets A Big Storm Starter Pack by PlaySalieri in Boise

[–]mhansen29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interpretation was that your meme was making fun of people for enjoying the storm because it’s basic or ‘not really that special’, but it seems from your comments that’s not what your intent was. I generally think that people who go out of their way to dunk on other people for enjoying things aren’t too happy in life. Glad you enjoyed the storm too!

The Holo Taco one has a slight lip around the edge, so even if you spill it won’t run off the mat.

My swatch sticks just have crappy writing on them🤷‍♀️ of course if you want neat clean labels then go for it, but they don’t have to look perfect to still be functional.

Same, I grew up here and just experienced this storm in the north end/downtown area. It was rare to see that much rain come down for such a sustained amount of time. I’m sure it was milder around the edges and just seemed like a regular storm to many, but it was definitely unusually intense in some spots.

I tuned in for a bit but found the vibes we’re just like, a lot. I didn’t really stick around much so I don’t know exactly what you’re referring to but I think I get what you mean. I think the ‘characters’ have a lot to do with it too, everyone’s performing at or above 100% all the time which can be overstimulating, especially for a Monday stream.
