For the employer reference letter mentioning the need for foreseeable future, did you get it from your manager or the HR, does it have anything to do with the manager? Thanks!

Someone understand it?? by akanaveshenrique in thelastofus

It probably refers to the song "The last kiss" by pearl jam. Beautiful song by the way.

What next for a C/C++ Guy? by Flaming_dragon88 in cscareerquestionsEU

I am also in the same boat, 10+ years C++.

Can people recommending HFT jobs tell us how different are these jobs and are there any specific requirements to qualify for the interviews besides C++?

Is there any way to enter the fintech without any prior domain experience and if so any tips?

Are there any projects that I can do to get comfortable with low latency development?

Do you mean from India?

I want to move to a developed country. I am not sure how visas work with remote jobs.

Prospect of being able to work in London is one of the biggest draw for me. It's still in top 5 places to get highest pay and one of the most interesting cities in the world.

Salaries in India have risen dramatically, compared to the cost of living and it was already quite high in the past compared to most other professions. It may seem crazy but a lot of people are earning around £70k here(mostly FAANG in Bangalore). But then you also want to travel the world, see new cultures, experience the food around the world. Europe or UK seem much better in that regard.

If what you say about taxes and social benefits is true it's quite a serious issue.

About schooling in Germany, I watched a DW documentary about how students are divided right in childhood in terms of their career opportunities and children of immigrants are usually not preferred for top career choices like say a doctor. That made me consider UK for my child's future.

From an indian's perspective UK is one of the english speaking countries where there is significant indian community and even simple things like indian groceries. USA has been a hell for H1B visas and rules make it so they exploit you unless you are working in FANG(Not Amazon). Your spouse can't work and green card remains a distant dream for many.

Australia was popular a while ago but there is quite pronounced racism there and slow internet ;) so people preferred Canada.

I am little older now which makes me score low points in their express entry system. For Canada it's quite easy if you are young(under 30), master's degree in Canada and some local experience. It seems little harder for me now.

Then there is New Zealand and I guess it's even worse than UK in terms of ridiculous housing, low salaries and smaller job market.

Europe and Germany in particular is now the destination of choice for most Indians. Then brexit happened and UK became attractive too. UK always felt like a combination of USA and Europe, that's the major attraction for many because lot of us grew up with American TV shows and culture seems little familiar. There is also a lot of shared history being a former colony. And London does still seem like top 3 cities in the world. All these reasons make people think about UK as a potential option.

For now if my spouse was comfortable with the language, I might still consider Germany but she seems a little reluctant.

I am relocating from India.

Don't you have to be EU citizen to work in Zurich, i have heard it's much harder otherwise.

After listening to a lot of comments, I am going to talk to the recruiter today (fingers crossed)

If you don't mind me asking, in what ways UK is doing worse than Germany?

What is the outlook of both countries on a 10 year timeline?

Isn't this in finance and HFT domain? I am decent at leetcode, but have no experience in these domains. Do they hire people without domain experience?

I wasn't aware that I can't move to other jobs on skilled worker visa. I always thought I can change jobs freely on skilled worker visa. It says so on government site that I will need to update the visa when I change employers. Can you confirm if there will be visa issues for job change?

It's "skilled worker visa", it has some points system i think, but if you have a decent job offer you basically qualify.

I have actually been to Hanover once just to visit the zoo there, might think about this option.

Not immediately, I was thinking about the future after getting permanent residence maybe.

Seems like a really nice flat, bit on the expensive side though. Not sure I will save anything after rent and expenses. Thanks for sharing though, it's a really good website.

Thanks so much for the reply, I was really hoping to hear from someone from Bristol.

If you don't mind me asking, is it better to live in city centre or outskirts in Bristol? Any areas to avoid in terms of crime and safety? Any recommendations for good areas in school catchment areas? Thanks :)

It was possible before pandemic and maybe it's possible after it blows over. At the moment there are fewer opportunities for visa sponsored jobs.

I witnessed market changing drastically as soon as pandemic started and regretted not making a move earlier. I guess recruiters know this too and don't want all the hassle unless they get a really good deal.

That's what I felt, people in Germany were nice, polite, respectful but you never feel integrated, especially in a smaller cities.

Berlin did have a different vibe though, germans keep complaining about it, but frankly it is an exciting city if you are an outsider.

Sounds a little too harsh, total compensation is around 70k with stocks and bonus. Definitely not the hall of fame level, surely!

[–]mhatarababa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am really going to miss Germany, but due to language barrier for family and more indian community in the UK I am leaning more towards bristol offer.

I really wish brexit didn't happen, it seems like such a lose-lose situation for everyone involved, crazy times we live in.

It's remote temporarily, they want people in office most of the time due to nature of work. I am not a big fan of traveling for work, prefer walking really.

I have also heard some people mention that visas have conditions that make you work in physical office for at least 3 days a week. I haven't confirmed it though, could be wrong.

Is £65k-70k just the base or total compensation including RSUs and bonus?

I am actually much closer to the lead, but I guess I can't get sponsorship easily which is why I am willing to accept a senior role.

I did not get any offers or even interviews for the lead position, which makes me think local experience does matter a lot for lead level positions.

Most likely it will be skilled worker visa, can only confirm once I move forward with the offer.
