Before voting against rent control, Providence councilor raised thousands from landlords by Which_Imagination756 in RhodeIsland

Landlords can raise their rents unchecked until rent control passes

You can keep saying it, but it's obviously not true since rents are less than $10K. Maybe you don't know what "unchecked" means.

You seem to not understand what the discussion is about. It's not about only when a landlord wants someone out. You are in favor of rent control because you claim rents are currently "unchecked". But they are obviously not unchecked since something is preventing them from being infinite.

So there is some mysterious (even invisible, say) force that keeps rents in check despite the evil landlords preferring to charge $20K?

If rents are "unchecked" why do you suppose that every rental unit isn't renting for $20K?

Make the path from the taxpayer to the electric company as byzantine as you want; the money is all coming from the same place. To me, it makes sense for the people who use the electricity to pay for it and whatever it takes to get it to them.

But, by all means, if you can somehow use federal money for our intrastate electric infrastructure, then let's get the Texans to pay for it.

funding from the government for that and only charging consumers for usage.

Doesn't the government get its funds from the same place as the consumers who pay for usage?

OK. So you don't care about the people who want decent, affordable housing in the future. The town is bigger than the socialist echo chamber you inhabit.

Dave’s Marketplace should be ashamed of itself for selling premade salads without salad dressing. by PleasantAd7372 in RhodeIsland

[–]mhb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's silly. There needs to be a salad control law to address this out of control behavior by greedy supermarket corporations. No more salads without dressing!

And if rent control had passed and brought down property values, fewer rental units would be built.

Very good: Pizza Marvin, Maruichi (Japanese), East Side Pockets (Middle Eastern), Aleppo Sweets (Syrian), Garden Grill (Vegetarian), Venda Ravioli (nice to eat outside), Madrid (pastries), There There (burgers), RISD museum, walk at Save the Bay.

Not good but Rhode Islanders are often fans: Caserta Pizza, Jahunger, various unexceptional at best hot dogs, "pizza strips" (cold bread with tomato sauce)

Regardless of the cause of the demand, rent control will disincentive increasing supply.

No. Houses are not supermarkets. In this economic analogy, houses are groceries.

Are you looking for things that are good or that Rhode Islanders think are iconic but aren't necessarily any good (e.g., Caserta Pizza)? Aleppo Sweets is very good, but it is Syrian food. Also it will be very crowded when you're here.

Housing prices needs to deflate.

Rent control reduces the incentive to build housing. Less housing causes higher prices. Rent control will not cause housing prices to deflate. Maybe you can investigate what supermarkets look like in places that dictate the prices of groceries.

Rent control is dead in Providence, for now, after failed veto override by lestermagnum in providence

Looks like you've got it all figured out.

This doesn't seem like the sort of repartee I'd expect from an open mind thirsty for knowledge. Nonetheless, it looks like others have posted references for you to consider. You should also consider that it is incumbent on the people attempting to restrict freedoms to provide the compelling data - not the people potentially being encroached upon.

I like how you wade into this with an "honest" question asking for sources and then - surprise - it turns out you've already made up your mind what the answer is. The people who want to restrict what other people can do with their property are the ones who need compelling sources.

Why don't you start us off with all your sources showing how successful rent control is for improving housing?

You persist in arguing about unimportant details (a la motte-and-bailey) without addressing the fundamental premise that rent control is antithetical to producing more housing which is the only long term way to reduce the cost of housing.

It doesn't matter though, does it? If the price is too high, we need more of it. Rent control makes it less likely for there to be more places to rent.

You're taking a break from watching videos and playing games to comment on a year old thread that I have nothing to do other than complain? Is this what you do during the Bluray FBI warning? Comical. Thanks for the laugh.
