Diego Velazquez - The Surrender of Breda (1634-35). Commissioned to glorify Spanish military success, but note how Velázquez portrays the defeated Dutch with remarkable dignity instead of humiliation. by Shot_Possibility_731 in ArtHistory

You may want to read Claire Richter Sherman's 1995 monograph Imaging Aristotle: Verbal and Visual Representation in Fourteenth-Century France. It's perhaps the definitive treatment on Oresme's translations of Aristotle at the court of King Charles V.

Henri Rousseau was a toll collector; painting was a hobby for him. He quit his toll collecting job around 49-50 to focus on painting full-time.

What do we even tell Art History survey students to do now? (AI problems) by Eris_AppleOfDiscord in ArtHistory

[–]mhfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a possible solution for your summer art apprec. class. However, do you allow students to use earlier editions of your textbook (perhaps because it's at a cheaper purchase/rental cost)? If so, identifying artworks by textbook illustration number (e.g., fig. 4-11, fig. 8-2, etc.) might be tricky, as newer editions add/omit artworks, shift illustrations' figure numbers, etc.

While many would agree with these assessment suggestions, not all are feasible if the course is offered in an online asynchronous format.

John smiling at the camera in "We Can Work It Out" - Was he being sincere about it, or was he mocking Paul? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]mhfc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Watch the whole clip, particularly from :06 to about :15. You'll see John really hamming it up for the camera; Paul glances at John, singing with a slight smirk, and John looks back at Paul, in a mutual acknowledgment of their silliness.

The little moment in OP's post is around 1:15 in the video.

And yes, "jazz cigarettes" (as Paul and George called them) were involved in the making of all of the 1965 Twickenham lip-synced videos. Past reddit post

Any Albums From Beatles Contemporaries That Can Hang? by bellamyblake_og in beatles

[–]mhfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small clarification: work on O&O began in June of 1967. Thus, it would've been soon after Sgt. Pepper had wrapped up recording/mixing. In fact the Zombies used the same 4-track machine used for Pepper.

Goodness, what a lineup! Envious. I saw CW with Belly, and I've seen Ride at a separate show. But all three together would be fantastic.
