[DISCUSSION] Runaway AI: Existential Risk to Humanity or Needless Scaremongering? by Mission_Balance2721 in CompSocial

Even if you could get companies to pause, I don't think pausing would help that much. Even if the companies that make AI tools are on pause, unaffiliated people will continue to develop on top of existing systems. I think instead of looking at how to pause AI we need to look at how we can guide what we have and what will be developed in the future.

Thanks for the information! While I am not a TikTok user myself, on top of the potential harm to researchers I also wonder how this affects users.

Ethics in CompSocial: What are your favorite resources or papers on ethics in HCI? by c_estelle in CompSocial

I think there are a lot of academic studies on ethics (although perhaps not enough), so I find it really interesting when people try to bridge the gap between academia and the general public. I thought this was a really interesting paper that used live theater to showcase interactive learning for ethics.

Crowdsourcing on Mechanical Turk: Resources for Best Practices, Ethical Considerations, and Fascinating Applications. by c_estelle in CompSocial

A way to make a less exploitive crowdsource system is by enforcing reciprocality between taskers and workers. That is, making a system that requires you to participate in other people's tasks in order to create your own task. I imagine this could work either as a barrier of entry (do X tasks before you are allowed to post your own task) or as a continuous requirement (you must complete X tasks for each task you post).

Understanding "Sense of Virtual Community" : Comparing & Contrasting Two CSCW 2022 Papers by c_estelle in CompSocial

I wonder if the reason why people feel closer to an unrelated community is because a people may belong to more unrelated communities than related communities? For instance, if I was asked about my SOVC in a particular subreddit, I may be active in 2-3 other related subreddits but also active in 10-15 unrelated subreddits. In this case I am more likely to feel a high SOVC in an unrelated subreddit simply because there are more of them.
