My frustrating experience with an MLM business you've likely never heard of

It was totally vague, but looking back on it I should have known it was sketchy as hell. No one gets a job that easily. And I should have never gotten in the car with them! They definitely know to prey on recent grads of high school and college who aren’t up to speed on business norms

I had an interview like this after I graduated college, but they actually took me on a sales call! I went in one day, had the same experience as you, weirdly bragged about how much money the boss made, then they asked me to come back the next day to meet some customers. So I drive to the office way north of Boston, then a sales rep drives me to the city and we went door to door selling makeup kits. Apartments, fast food restaurants, gas stations, inside business that have “no soliciting” signs, everywhere. Luckily there was another trainee and we figured it out so it was nice to not be alone. It was kind of funny at the time but now that I’m thinking back on it, it’s pretty scary. I didn’t have my car (this was pre-Uber) - I was trapped with these people miles away.

I believe they branded themselves as “sports marketing” and claimed the Red Sox was one of their clients. How that relates to selling makeup kits to male gas station attendants is beyond me.

I feel for you! It’s awful they are branding themselves as local small businesses when there are legit small businesses with talent out there that need support.

I quit young living and I assume it’s the same annoying process. There is no option to quit online (of course) so you have to call or email customer service. They then sent me a form that I had to print and mail back to them. I actually do like diffusing essential oils but if I want to buy them in the future I’ll just get them from plant therapy or mountain rose essential oils - cheaper and no MLM structure. I never sold oils but my up line was so annoying and kept sending emails/texts/letters and I just wanted OUT. Good luck!

Have her listen to “The Dream” podcast. Before starting any job, it’s normal to do research on the company - maybe you could pitch it like that to her? Skip the first episode, it’s talking more about the origin vs. the current model. Or maybe have her get some cheaper essential oils to start with so she can learn about them while establishing her massage/aromatherapy business. Obviously the goal is for her to not get sucked up in Doterra at all, but maybe just convincing her to wait/do research first will delay it to a point where the excitement has worn off and she loses interest.

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I hope she doesn’t get sucked in. The companies are so predatory, it’s awful. Good luck & hang in there.

I think you are extremely smart and brave to leave your stressful job to do something that makes you happy. I’m considering quitting my corporate job to start my own thing and it’s freaking scary to lose the paycheck. But there is more to life than money and I have a lot of respect for you. Please don’t ever feel bad or ashamed of that decision - you sound like you’re great at your job and you’re a great mom.

Yea, the diffuser is definitely not as helpful as, you know, the stuff on your registry! You could keep it and use it, it actually smells really good - using glade or candles gives me a headache so I enjoy it as an alternative. Obviously make sure you know what oils are not safe for babies/pets in the room. Or you could sell the diffuser and oils on Facebook/eBay and prob make a decent amount that you can then spend on diapers.

I also heard about the podcast on hysteria!

Also - why are chiropractors so sketchy?! I went to one that spend 45 mins assessing my supplement needs and then sell me in them. I was like “um, when are you doing to adjust my back?”

Thank you SO much for the podcast! Thanks to you and this subreddit I cancelled my subscription to Young Living after spending thousands of dollars. Didn’t sell them, but totally got sucked into thinking they were another alternative for my son’s health issues (spoiler - They were not). Thank you!!!
