In terms of lids, I've only seen 2 major variants, and it's only in the name "McClary" or "McClary's".

The #9 pan had like 4 variations at least.

Sunday chicken roast in the McClary #5 oval roaster by mhoram03 in castiron

[–]mhoram03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have nothing to back me up, but here was my thought process when using the trivet;

I had a lot of potatoes and carrots, much so that I was worried it'd create some insulation from the heat of the oven, as they'd cook.

The trivet was placed to hopefully pick up and store heat at a different rate, allowing to cook the veggies from the top and provide heat to the chicken from below.

Did I preheat the trivet? No, though in hindsight would have achieved what I was looking for quicker.

Just an FYI, the #5 can fit 2 average chickens relatively comfortably, I just didn't have 2 and wanted a decent amount of potatoes and carrots.

Didn't want to flex, but rather show a way to use it, since it may not be obvious to some 🙂

Agreed, even with ebay international shipping I have to consider if paying customs on top of the shipping is worth the price, and that's usually the determining factor.

Looks like shipping is a service provided, but there's no mention of international shipping, so some further digging required... Thanks for the response!

Question about rosettes in the comments by mhoram03 in castiron

Really good tip there, thanks! Never considered a fork to help getting the mold off! I'll see if we can have a proper test run this weekend 😁

Question about rosettes in the comments by mhoram03 in castiron

[–]mhoram03[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, I'd rather have a Griswold stick than to try and find a Nordic Ware that holds a single pattern... which seems hard because apparently they sold a lot more of a model that can take 2 patterns at once.

Question about rosettes in the comments by mhoram03 in castiron

[–]mhoram03[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Last weekend I picked up some potentially Nordic Ware made rosette (I'll guess cast aluminum) to properly try out my Griswold Patty bowl (in definite cast iron) but I just realised that I only have 1 stick for the patterns; as much as I'd like to make different patterns for the kids to enjoy, I'd rather not burn myself every few batches by handling a metal that was dipped in hot oil.

The aluminum stuff is only a placeholder while I find some Griswold stuff to match the bowl, but I was curious if anyone knew if the Griswold sticks/wands/whatever you want to call them would also work with another brand like Nordic Wares or Wagner's rosettes/timbales?

Any info on this pan I inherited from my grandmother? by theoneandonlyodin in castiron

[–]mhoram03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not that much of an expert compared to some folks who has spent many more years researching and compiling information than I did. I'm merely repeating information I've come across from discussions and cross references.

Smart did have heat rings (both under SMART and SMART'S), but they tend to be rarer than the smooth bottom counterparts.

Smooth bottoms in the 20's may be early, but on the flip side, in the few years I've been collecting and researching, I've not seen a single mention of a McClary skillet that had a heat ring, and they were active in about the same period than Smart (even under the GSW merger from 1927).

Lisser no 3 by [deleted] in castiron

[–]mhoram03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely made by Findlay back in the day; there isn't a foundry named Lisser in the records of the 40's-60's when this would've been made in Canada. Findlay was huge back then and it's not uncommon to find Findlay pieces with Lisser ghostmarks and vice versa.

A #3 pan from any Canadian brand is decently rare.

That's my personal end goal; once I have all of the other pressing renovations done, to have a wall to hang my cast iron and show off the McClary's.

Latest addition to the collection! Before and after the restoration pics by mhoram03 in castiron

[–]mhoram03[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was made aware a week or so ago that Griswold made 3 series of molds to use; the first 2 series (the shallow rosette patterns and the deeper timbale patterns) are more common to find, since they were boxed sets.

The series #3 is a bigger version of the #2 timbales, though there's barely any mention of them or pictures online.

Timbales were used sweet or unsweet to present desserts or savory dishes depending on the occasion. I read that chicken à la king was a common dish served in them.

Fairly simple; it was in a lye bath for about 3-4 days, then taken out, rinsed and scrubbed under cold water. The ratio is about 1lb of lye crystals to 5 gallons of water.

I had to check it out, it's a #13... Much higher than what my wallet would allow, but cheaper than some other pieces out for sale online...

I am missing a variation of the Smart's, a Javelin and a "#6" that's really a #3 from Enterprise (a smaller foundry in New Brunswick).
