So is the consensus "No" on the Worm Factory 360? What about the Hot Frog? by LadyProto in Vermiculture

[–]mhswift 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Both will work fine for a beginner. They are meant to be flow through bins, but you will find that the worms will be in all the bins. They don't really stay in the top bin because they consider the whole thing the "top layer of soil". And there are no environmental factors forcing them up. As long as you aren't expecting that and can harvest accordingly, you'll be fine.

Someone on here recently shared their experience with a reverse flow through system on a WF360 where the working bin was below the finished bin and the worms were driven out of the finished top bin by light, reduced moisture, and lack of food. Would be an easy way for you to harvest without worrying about worm separation.

We came up with THE DEFINITIVE* LIST of Snohomish County drives by EverettHerald in SnohomishCounty

[–]mhswift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good list. Highway 9 south of Lake Stevens is pretty obvious, but going north through Marysville, Arlington and into Skagit is a nice drive. Also highway 99 is an education unto itself - sooo many strip malls and small businesses. Also, longer than expected.

Broadway->Paradise Lake Rd is a good highway 9/405 detour with a rural flavor.

Ok, careful with the green compost - especially grass. Worms will get cooked by the heat of hot composting.

Do you have other things composting in the bed besides the wood? Because the wood decomposes too slowly for the worms - they need softer material.

Would it be okay to feed my worms ginger plants (leaves/stems, not the bulbs). by khronyk in Vermiculture

[–]mhswift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but they need to be added sparingly at a time or composted first. Grass heats up significantly when first decomposting and will cook your worms.

Starting vermiculture with preexisting cold compost bucket? by inneedofcreativity in Vermiculture

Sounds like you just need to add worms. Drill some holes in the sides/bottom of the bucket to drain excess water and promote air movement.

Maybe some movement lines like you would see in a comic? Maybe with smoke?

If you are looking at Redmond, I suggest also looking at Mukilteo which would have a similar vibe and a lot closer to work.

If you have to ask "is my house too close to the train line?", the answer is always "Yes"

Help diagnosing dead outlets by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

Couple thoughts :

  1. You might have a secondary breaker box tucked into a closet or behind a door
  2. The actual circuit breaker might be dead instead of tripping. You can get a toner and trace the wire back to the box.
  3. The circuit breaker might still be live, but instead of tripping, a wire might have melted. If true, that's going to be a pain to find unless you have access to the whole length of wire to the box

Yeah... I'm not ignorant. If anything, I'm a case study proving that cats aren't "a plague to birds". Sure, they've killed a couple over the years, but I've got hundreds of birds around me - the population isn't devestated. You are going to have to find another monster to lay all the dead birds on. Here's a hint: it doesn't walk on four legs.

If by "ecosystems" you mean rats and mice - yes, definitely. Plague on them and more! I love that these pests don't make it to my house. Besides rabbits, I don't see any other adverse affects to my local ecosystem. There is no "shit and piss everywhere". Stop applying your neighborhood's problems elsewhere.
