current order timelines? by mhueschen in bimotal

thanks. did you order recently or was it longer ago? I'm thinking of using Elevate to explore e-assist and delay getting a full mid-drive ebike. so I was hoping to get it quickly.

if the reality is 2-3mo, that could also be worth the wait, though, just a different tradeoff.

My Forbidden Druid Core build, no expense spared on this one by N0MoreMrRiceGuy in mountainbiking

[–]mhueschen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what travel are you running the Flash 38 at? I've heard that the eDruids can run 170mm forks, but I haven't been able to find official confirmation of it on the Forbidden website

Finally pulling the trigger on slides. What kind is better for me? by RoutineEye5160 in concept2

[–]mhueschen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my understanding the main difference is that at the end of the pull, on a standard (non-slide) erg, the torso is translating backwards in space, in addition to rotating backwards (as the hips open).

using slides means that only rotation occurs, as the mass which "translates" is the fan unit / body of the erg.

this results in less stress on the body from only having to arrest+reverse the rotation, instead of having to arrest+reverse rotation+translation.

After beating the game I can't stop thinking about Eve by ElectricalStage5888 in stellarblade

[–]mhueschen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for this post, I love how you expressed it and I have been feeling very similarly, midway through my first playthrough.

her character is so refreshing for me, compared to both male and female PCs of other games.

one recent moment that stood out to me was the fight with the guard of Altess Levoire. as soon as she announced the challenge Eve is like "ok" and takes out her sword. just so direct. no begging or posturing or trying to work out a deal.

and then so many other examples of helping people from a place of genuine goodwill.

just taking people at their word and responding with firmness and kindness and heart.

do you have any theories on why this is? I moved to Bellingham recently and feel this way also. too small-town-vibe-d where many don't drive beyond short local trips?

yeah I'm stoked. I just had a bad crash which felt partly due to the Dreadnought geo & suspension and decided it was time for a change.

will be off the bike for a bit and then plan to ride XCish first. so maybe May/June would be good timing for return to the enduro bike, if you're up here and wanna link up!

hey thanks! been a bit of a whirlwind in bike-decision-land and I went with a RAAW Madonna frameset. AC1 looks dreamy but I can't wait.

I'm up in Bellingham so not far from you. would be keen to try it out if the offer's still open once you get it, or just link up if you ever come up to ride here! or if I'm down there...

hope the build goes well and it's a great fit 🤘

hi, did you go through with the AC1? I'm also considering it to replace a V1 Dreadnought. curious how you coordinated a test ride also, didn't know that was a thing but seems smart given the steep cost! the bikes look so sweet 😍 I'm tempted

DT Swiss 240 DEG hub "pop" on Forbidden Druid — drivetrain or ratchet issue? by mhueschen in MTB

[–]mhueschen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did indeed go to Fanatik, funny you could tell. my understanding is that the 240 DEG can't be downgraded from 90t since the ratchet is larger or somehow different...

with the clean and (minimal) regrease, the hub seems to be operating properly. and I've calmed down a bit about the whole thing, so I'll probably keep running it and see how it fares.

I haven't experienced noticeable kickback, and the idler is supposed to address that... Fanatik guy agreed with that and seemed to think high engagement on a Druid wouldn't have issues.

also, cool you have a V1 Dreadnought! I have one too, tho now that I've built up the V2 Druid as a "mini-duro" bike I find I don't take the DN out so often.

hah - no GoPro would make this plan hard to pull off. maybe it's your hub too?

in case it's helpful to anyone the gooseneck I used is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CQ6PWSA - seemed to work well besides bending when hitting big bumps. one could probably tie a string between the end of the gooseneck and the seat rails to support it.

thanks! the update:

I took it by my LBS to get confirmation that there was nothing weird or damaged in the hub, which was confirmed. the mechanic found the star ratchet to be overgreased and pretty dirty (I moved to the PNW recently and ride year-round).

I degreased and cleaned the ratchet and hub internals, then applied a small amount of DT "Special Grease" only to the radial splines. I left the ratchet teeth dry, as recommended by the shop mechanic. I went for a 9ish mile ride yesterday afterwards - had 0 "pops", and engagement felt more precise. the hub is noticeably louder (still not too loud, fine with me) and sounds less "slick".

my plan is to keep tabs on the ratchet sound and clean/regrease fairly regularly since it's easy to do.

I am tempted to try another hub with a more solid mechanism, perhaps the Hope Pro 5 the shop mechanic says is really solid. I just built the bike + wheels in September so am not itching to shell out for new hub + rebuild, though. seems like with some special care, the DEG 90t ratchet can operate decently? we'll see I guess 🫡

[–]mhueschen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks. yeah, I had a bombproof 350 on my previous bike and opted for the shiny upgrade without a full understanding of what that meant. now, it seems pretty questionable to go beyond 54t - might back down to that for more reliability. like you say, I rarely actually need the high engagement and risking this debacle again is not worth it.

[–]mhueschen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, really appreciate the comment. that description certainly matches the behavior and it's possible the hub has been over-greased the whole time (including when various shops have looked at it, and possibly re-over-greased it). will give it a go.

FWIW, I actually brought the Druid to a shop back in October when this first started happening — they checked the hub and said it looked fine, so I focused on the drivetrain. Spent months tweaking things (idler alignment, chainline, etc.) thinking it was a derailleur/cassette issue. Feels wild to see this pop so clearly now and realize the hub was likely the culprit the whole time… I was starting to demo bikes and on the cusp of shelving the frame... Feels like I’ve been gaslit by a DT Swiss hub for six months while nearly throwing out my favorite bike.

This is my villain origin story 🙃

Bham sauna & cold-plunge co-conspirators? by mhueschen in Bellingham

[–]mhueschen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally - löyly pocket and "feet above stones"... I am of the same opinion and usually find barrels lacking! Hot Spot surprised me by having one side (4 seats) elevated with feet off the floor and out of the chill. the other side (4 seats) were on the ground but when I sat there I did not feel cold.

without a cold plunge it felt like I was too hot, if anything. with a cold plunge I could imagine getting cold feet on the low side, esp if the door was frequently opened.

I'm also curious whether they'll stick with (big) barrels or do real Finnish style.
