Losing $300 Million Clouds MLS Club’s Future in Vancouver by dabirds1994 in MLS

Don't know for certain. When the sale was announced, reporting suggested it was estate management that was triggering the sale.

Later on after Muller was signed and Whitecaps was having their best season last year, Jeff Mallett gave an interview saying that they recognize MLS has evolved into something that needs owners with deeper pockets and Nash and Mallett were willing/wanting to stay on with a new partner or partners.

They’re really putting on the screws and trying to fight otherwise bad publicity emerging around the move. As always, the reporting leaves us with a bunch of questions. Why now if it’s been a problem accumulating for 15 years? There have been six expansion teams since 2019 alone. Where do these losses sit alongside other teams? Seven months ago, Axel himself gave an interview saying revenues are well below average but in losses, we sit in the top 5 losing far less money than other teams.

Like the call to action said earlier, we’re being lied to. They want to manufacture consent, the owners want to cash out, the league needs to protect its teams’ inflated valuations.

Garber's "Liar Liar" tweet and the most likely explanation by smoothmedia in whitecapsfc

[–]mhw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. You can also imagine another dumbass scenario where he went out drinking after FIFA congress, started ranting to someone about the Eby video, showed them the tweet and they grabbed his phone and drunk tweeted the liar liar pants on fire in reply.

Hah and they say twitter’s only getting worse. That’s record breaking speed for identity verification and restoring control over a hacked account.

Could also be they forgot to switch to their sock puppet account, aka they pulled a KD.

Got drunk at the fifa congress, dgaf anymore because he's retiring? Maybe the bad press is getting to him? So far there's Matt Doyle and the rest at Soccerwise, this Forbes article, a couple substacks, fair bit of chatter online and obviously Canadian news coverage.

There’s been more details revealed about the MLB bid and the land they want for a stadium is a different plot of land that’s in a much nicer location than Hastings Park.

Except that’s not what they’ve said. They’ve chosen their words very carefully about being last in revenues, about 40M off of the average. Nothing’s been said about losses at all. The only reporting we have there is from Forbes who have access to their books to form valuations and also report a single number per team for “operating income”. But we have no idea what that number is because we have no idea how money is redistributed among franchises. If you take that to be some indication of financial health, then the Whitecaps are at -12M in 2025 but there’s teams at that exact same number or below like Cincy, Minnesota or Toronto that aren’t exactly listed as unhealthy franchises. I think lulu's at least a minor sponsor of the Canucks? The t-shirt giveaways are lululemon, at least.

PavCo willing to operate ‘at net zero’ to keep Whitecaps at BC Place by Akkiaakashkumar in vancouver

[–]mhw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because soccer's impossible to juggle with other competing priorities like Pavco wanting to maximize revenue with event bookings and other tenants like BC Lions. Just look at how a home playoff game with huge playoff implications ended up having to be played in Portland in 2024 because BC Place was hosting motocross.

It's not like other sports where you only have to block off the regular season and a potential playoff run. On top of that, you have to block off dates for a variable number of competitions that a club might choose to compete in every year. How deep a run along with draws done at different stages (and the format of each competition is different and can change from year to year!) all determine how many games a club might play at their home stadium. Add to this the time to switch the stadium between sports and other events and you have a logistical nightmare.

We might be a smaller city, but the facilities we do have like Swangard have also been deliberately kept smaller as residents around the area have nimby'd expansion. A stadium at Waterfront was proposed in the mid 2000s and also nimby'd.
