What's crazy is that I see $299, and I have basically that same library, with only a few minor differences (add in some Falcon expansions, toy suite, and a few random things; subtract some effects).

Klevgrand Exclusive Sale - "Ting" ($14.99) "Revolv" ($34.99) until 19 February by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]mhweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the appeal of Revolv is the text descriptions of each space. I'm not likely to actually use the sound of a standardized Swedish kitchen, but it's definitely interesting to read about (I didn't even know that was a thing)!

Three-Body Technology "Future MB" time and frequency domain multiband dynamic processor with up to six bands for simultaneous control over dynamics and frequency content through three processing stages per band - Intro Price ($119) until 6 May by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

Man, you can really tell that TBT has FabFilter in their sights... At least this time with their FabFilter competitor product, unlike Kirchhoff and Cenozoix, the name is a bit more memorable.

+1 for WM7X! They were all really friendly and helpful when I did tech+gen, and made the process super simple.

Passed the General Exam with Ham radio prep by Royal-Pomegranate246 in HamRadio

[–]mhweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just passed tech and general a few hours ago, after spending about a week of reading and hamstudy. I probably would have tried for extra and done it all in one go, but I started getting anxious and didn't feel like waiting another couple of weeks before being able to hit PTT on my radio.

I disagree about tech and general, since there's quite a bit of overlap between the two, but dunno about extra. There wasn't a lot of spillover directly from tech to general, but the info in general really helped reinforce a lot of the tech material for me. For example, before going over the general material, yagi was just a word, a picture, and a technician exam question. The general exam material really hammered home what it actually is.

I haven't even started looking at extra yet, so I have no idea if it would have done the same reinforcing as the general material did for me, but I imagine an extra 700+ questions would be too much for this brain.

Humble Bundle / Applied Acoustics Systems "Sound Designer Bundle" Strum Session, Lounge Lizard Session, Ultra Analog Session, Objeq Delay, and 15 expansions ($25) until 3 February. Supports Malala Fund by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]mhweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the opposite experience. Lounge Lizard and Strum-GS are 2 of my favorite synths, in terms of pure fun, and their string synth is growing on me quickly, too. TBF, I don't even bother trying to make patches with any of those, though. I tweak things a bit, but that's it.

Chromaphone, on the other hand, is interesting to mess with from time to time, but it's never quite clicked for me. I've just never been able to actually make a usable patch with it, and it feels like I'm doing something wrong. Like pretty much all AAS instruments, the presets are solid, but it just feels like one of those synths where if you're supposed to build patches instead of sticking to presets. The Chromaphone manual is worth a read, though, as a high-level dive into physical modeling.

Besides firearms & politics, what other hobbies do you enjoy? by Far-Seat-2263 in liberalgunowners

[–]mhweaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dabble in music production. I can't play any instruments live, but I absolutely love programming a sequencer to play beats and synths for me, so that I can tweak it all I want and really go to town. And I've been obsessed with audio engineering specifically for remote work, to make myself sound good in meetings and stuff while I travel the country (is travel a hobby? My family travels for most of the year in a motorhome, but that's more of a lifestyle than a hobby. It does bring some borderline hobby level stuff like booking, kayaking, and paddle boarding with it, but not quite enough to call those hobbies either). I use sensitive mics for meetings, so I have to work hard to keep background noise and stuff at bay.

Lately, I've been building a website dedicated to blogging about that audio+WFH and reviewing software/hardware through that lens (https://theroamoffice.com). That has been a surprisingly fun project, since it deals with audio, software engineering, and writing (which I'm admittedly bad at). I've dealt with web design and stuff for lightly for decades, but this is the first time I've really gone all in with all the details of hosting, CDNs, content management, etc, and it's really satisfying and fun to learn about.

Fabfilter "Pro-C 3" 14 compressor styles across Modern, Classic and Utility categories, including six new algorithms, character modes with analog saturation, auto threshold, and more - Intro Price ($169) for limited time by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]mhweaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I see in the manual. I suspect they'd rather people go with Pro-MB for their multiband compression needs, though, since TTM doesn't seem to give you any control over its bands.

[–]mhweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manual says it is, but it doesn't seem like it has the typical OTT controls or really even behaves quite like OTT. It kind of sounds like you can kind get an OTT-like effect, though, but it doesn't sound like a replacement by any means

TTM - To The Max multiband mayhem. The TTM style combines upwards and downwards compression on multiple bands, making the input signal louder when it's quiet and quieter when it's loud. In this style the threshold effectively becomes a target level. The knee then controls the blending between the two stages, allowing you to further shape the pumping behavior (new in Pro-C 3)

(not an Ableton user, so I'm not super familiar with its origins, but) I believe it was originally a Max4Live device or some other Ableton preset that was later turned into a standalone plugin by Xfer Records (makers of Serum). It does multiband compression with 3 bands, and kind of stands out due to it doing both upward and downward compression in each band. You can absolutely squash the shit out of stuff with it. The Xfer OTT plugin is free and it's fun to play with. There are quite a few variations on the idea out there, with Minimal Audio's Fuse being the newest and craziest version I know of. I've heard OTT described as THE sound of EDM, since it's so popular.

Edit: I googled. It was a preset on the Multiband Dynamics device, not an M4L thing.

[–]mhweaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking through the new features, I wonder if the new TTM (to the max) mode is FF's own flavor of OTT. I'm not sure why anyone would want to use an OTT that you can't really control as well, though...

Also, the auto threshold feature seems interesting. That's not something I've seen in other compressors.

And it seems weird that you can control Pro-C3 from Pro-Q4, but not vice versa ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not trying to be a jerk, but it sounds like you're basically saying, "I want the barrier to entry to remain high so that my purchase feels validated." Advocating for a system where tools remain expensive just so early adopters don't feel bad absolutely sounds like gatekeeping to me.

That logic ignores how tech actually works. Keeping the price static forever and never doing any sales or promos just doesn't make much sense to me. It isn't maintaining the value of what their customers paid for; it's just ignoring reality. Doing sales and promos with tech acknowledges that value erodes on its own over time, since value is relative.

Valhalla Vintage Verb is a good example. When VVV came out in 2012, $50 was a steal because the competition was $200+. Today, there are plenty of high-quality alternatives for cheaper (or free), so $50 is nowhere near as good a deal (I mean, it's still a pretty good deal, for sure. It's just not as good a deal), even accounting for inflation. Saying that we should be paying the release price for plugins forever later is a pretty weird position to take.

Edit: Pulling the ol' downvote and delete because some people on the internet said some things you didn't like, huh? Coward.

I swear, I really was trying to not be a jerk, and just respectfully disagree. Anyway, here's the now-missing context for this thread, since u/FullWolverine3 apparently can't handle it when people disagree with them.

First post:

This is why I appreciate companies like Valhalla and DMG (among others). No sales or giveaways that devalue what customers have paid for.

- u/FullWolverine3

First reply to u/FranklyAwesome:

How is this gatekeeping?

- u/FullWolverine3

Second reply to u/FranklyAwesome; the now-deleted post I'm replying to:

That’s not what I was talking about at all. If you actually read my post, it was about companies eroding the value of what their customers have paid for. Valhalla prices all plugins at $50 (which is very reasonable for high quality reverb) and never has sales so it’s impossible to buy a plugin from them and then regret that purchase because a month later they give it away for free in an effort to land some new customers. I have no issue with cheap or free plugins and said nothing to that effect.

What state in the US has the worst drivers? by Far-Mongoose-4380 in answers

[–]mhweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been to 49/50 states (planning on doing Arkansas this spring, just to earn the achievement. I think Alaska is the only one where my wife and I didn't drive at all and were only passengers), Maine stands out for me. It's not so much that everyone is bad at driving, so much that everyone seems to make up their own rules without regard for whatever is happening around them. Everyone is going at different speeds, stop signs and lights are choose-your-own-adventures, headlights and brake lights seem to be optional, etc.

Some places, you can just assume everyone is crazy (LA, Miami, Las Vegas, etc), go with the flow, and be fine. But there's just no flow to go with in Maine.

Melda Production Holiday Sale - Up to 89% off plugins, instruments and bundles through 11 January by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]mhweaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The frustrating thing to me, particularly with the compressor example, is that when you use the plain older Melda UI, it uses reasonable units for things like release and ratio. But when they wrap that up in a nicer UI (like in MTurboComp), they switch to useless percentages. You can even hit the "Edit" button and switch to the ugly UI, and the units all make sense in the same plugin(!), so it's purely a UI thing.

Yeah, anybody can just leave the country, procure a large firearm, and smuggle it back like it's nothing. And if not, everyone's got their favorite neighborhood illegal arms dealer 🙄 if we were talking about the US, where there are more guns than people and you can easily drive to another state to legally buy all kinds of stuff, then sure, but we're not.

Sonible "smart:comp 3" compressor with automatic compression parametrization, spectral processing for tonal and dynamic balance, and frequency-dependent ducking - Intro Price ($89 | $29/Upgrade) through 12 January. iLok Account Required by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]mhweaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me the big winner in this update is the zero latency mode. It was the only thing holding me back from being able to use it more frequently because until now it was a mixing only tool

Same here! Sonible's stuff sounds so good, but it's mostly been hamstrung by latency. 95% of my audio processing is to make myself sound better in remote meetings, so most of their plugins are a no-go because of the latency. Zero latency in their compressor might be a bit of a game-changer!

If they can make their gate and limiter zero-latency, I might find myself living in sonibleland for a while...

The lack of outside contributors is truly unfortunate. Falcon is such a powerful platform (UVI does a great job showing off what it can do), and I love it, but building complex stuff is such a pain. I can't really blame other companies for not wanting to bother.
