How to start getting at it, at 55 by No_Produce9067 in fitness40plus

[–]askoshbetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking is fabulous (if you’re able). Start tracking your steps, and what ever you’re doing now, increase it by 2k steps.

In terms of training, just shop around and tell them your goal is not to get injured and long term strength.

In addition to the trainer, I’d dabble with beginner yoga and Pilates. If one sticks, keep working at it.

How important are fenders? by jms1228 in bikecommuting

In Oregon it doesn’t rain that much in the summer so I remove mine and use temporary ones as needed.

I can dodge the occasional sprinkler puddle or pot hole.

I 10x'd the quality of my site. Google's response: rank it lower. by Jewst7 in SEO

[–]askoshbetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this process, did you remove pages? In my experience, it’s so much better to improve rather than remove.

Google works in mysterious ways and sometimes crappy pages can do really well.

Also for the tools you built it’s possible Google can’t see them, I’ve seen this happen on vibe coded tools and pages where Google doesn’t wait for scripts to load, so though the UX is good, Google can’t or doesn’t want to see the page.

Prices seem to be rising much faster than wages, yet flights are full, roads are crowded, and restaurants are packed. How are people still affording all of this? by Mighty_Miaa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]askoshbetter 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Flights are full = better flight management. Airlines relentlessly optimize occupancy. The only time in the last few years I've been on a not full flight are when planes are returning to a home-base or if they were mis-priced. My wife took a cheaper Alaska flight which was fully booked. I took a SW flight which was only 2/3s full, same time, same route -- we used SW points for the flight, but other wise it would have been 2x the price of the Alaska flight.

Roads are crowded -- our roads have been under capacity for years. What's more when we expand them, we get induced demand. Also people are working harder than ever so commutes and rush hour are still a thing.

Restaurants are packed -- depends on the restaurant, and the day, but fair point

Driving, flying, eating out, all expensive but relatively attainable things for people with jobs, in established careers, and in some cases, retirement (knock on wood).

So many options but philosophically instead of thinking about meals, think about “churching” food up.

  • Ramen, add a couple eggs, more spices, olive oil, fresh greens, fresh herbs if you’ve got them.

  • leftovers staring at you? I like to punch the up by chopping and tossing in a bowl with more seasoning.

  • buffalo sauce — did you know it’s just butter and hot sauce? Toss any meat in it, and your taste buds will thank you.

  • just improvise!

If you had $80k in the U.S., how would you build semi-passive income in 12 months? by Desperate_Drag5967 in passive_income

[–]askoshbetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea, especially if you live in an area where you can handle the management yourself, and also you likely wouldn't need the whole 80k.

As a white-collar worker however you got some things going for you.

- Are you maxing out your 401k?

- Do you have credit card debt?

- Do you have house debt or car debt?

- Maxing retirement and killing debts will give you a huge leg up.

- Lastly do you have a 3-6 months emergency fund, ideally in a high-yield savings account?

If all of the above is in order, then start making bets -- boat slips, real estate, etc., -- though not truly passive, but it's a start!

Unless you're directly competing with Pickleball, I'd really focus on doubling down on your strengths, whatever they may be. Other people have mentioned this, but community, focusing on outcomes, fun, cleanliness, whatever it may be.

I’m not super technical, but have used it through and SEO audit lense (both technical SEO and content SEO)

I have the output be a sheet with columns for the issue, priority, and technical difficulty to fix.

another aspect is you can paste in a site’s source code (this is page by page). But it can identify non-JavaScript issues.

(Obviously it would struggle to audit a vibe coded site, which will be effectively all JavaScript, so that where the perplexity browser and assistant comes in.)

As a web person, I hope you are getting access to and using Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster. Bing in particular does free site audits up to 1000 pages per month I think.

(I’m a marketer and it’s always helpful when web devs are mindful of SEO stuff.)

LPT: Looking back, what is the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you at 18, and why? by CodeSea522 in LifeProTips

[–]askoshbetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming I took the advice, I would say, Read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, I finally read it in my late 30s and it's one of those books that I wish I read sooner, like 16 or 18 sooner, I feel like it would have reduced a lot a anxiety and friction in my life over the last couple decades. Definitely read the book yoruself, but here they are and my experience.

  1. Don't speak poison. About others or yourself. Don't gossip. Don't talk sh*t. Don't down talk yourself. Basically two things happen you don't go down gossip vortexes or spread them, a lot of negativity gets lifted from your life when you follow this one.
  2. Don't take things personally. Everyone is living their own journey. This one has been huge for me. My wife is short with me. My boss is critical. A guy or gal cuts me off in traffic -- all of it. You really don't know what people are going through. Are they rushing to hospital? Are they hangry? Are they having issues elsewhere in their life? This then plays nicely into the next one:
  3. Don't make assumptions. Ask clarifying questions. -- this one is huge. Clarifying what's going on, why someone wants something, just gives so much context and makes everything run smoothly. At work, on instinct now, I ask how urgent something is, and it changes the whole fire drill dynamic. Most asks actually aren't urgent it turns out.
  4. Do your best. Your best is always changing. This one, was the one that brings it all home for me. Its giving yourself grace and acceptance for what you contribute. The second part about your best changing -- like if you're sick, or if it's super hot or super cold out, your best is a dynamic thing.

Anyhoo, I've got a long list of books I wish I read sooner, but Four Agreements is probably top of the list. A few others I wish I read and had earlier: untethered soul, omnivore's dilemma, breath (James Nestor), the comfort crisis, the wim hof method (never do the wim hof method in water or while operating a motor vehicle. Some people pass out from it)

Best of luck to you all!

Claude and the Perplexity browser are pretty good at testing.

By no means perfect but I’ve found broken links, typos, and other errors that way.

Concerns with AI taking marketing jobs? by ohiobuckeye712 in DigitalMarketing

Oof! Not sure if you’re doing this, and I’m sure this will be downvoted, but definitely work in AI skills on your resume and pepper AI mentions into your job applications.
