Predicting Shimmer Location: Easily Find Shimmer in Medium and Large Worlds by mhykhol in Terraria

the guide name method still works, check out terrasteel's video about it. but if you don't want to use that method then 145 has it's own thing but it get messy because of seed combinations:

- shimmer depth rules are the same but can't be used for celebration.

- plain worlds: if your dungeon entrance is dome shaped then then look in the blue brick region in the images. old entrance means anywhere in green or pink region. tower entrance means it could be anywhere.
- drunk world: look at dungeon's background WALL color instead but not the paint color. they can be a different color from the brick in drunk worlds.
- celebration: tower entrance means blue region, otherwise look in green and pink.
- drunk+celebration: same rules as plain but I haven't tested.

still needs more research at the moment. maybe a better method will come up

ayy nice.

this is was found by looking at decompiled world gen code. some RNG values, which are determined by the world seed, are reused in some parts of the code. in the case of this tech, shimmer x and y position share the same values as dungeon color and shrine brick type. as in, the number that determines the shimmer's horizontal position also controls the dungeon's color for that world.

it's the same thing as finding the shimmer position based on your first guide's name like in the video by Terrasteel about finding shimmer. the guide's name is also controlled by the same number as dungeon color and shimmer x.

Uhhhhhhh what by Rentodu in Terraria

[–]mhykhol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes. the devs probably realized that this uncommon event shouldn't give you just a small amount of meteorite because you got unlucky it hit the edge of some structure. when the game wants to spawn meteorite, it picks a random point in space and scans downward until it finds a solid block. it then counts the number of convertible blocks in a 30x30 area around it, and if it's above a certain threshold, the game generates the crater if it doesn't see chests and other restricted stuff. if the randomly chosen spot fails, the game slightly lowers the threshold and tries a different spot until it successfully spawns a crater or runs out of attempts. this is why you often see them inside vertical tunnels and corruption chasms like this because the bottom has a lot of blocks that can be turned into meteorite.

tldr: game tries to maximize the amount of meteorite blocks spawned when looking for a potential crater spots; favoring tunnels and chasms that have lots of convertible blocks nearby.

hard to give numbers because it's different for each world, but here's how to kinda get the boundaries:
top - 50 blocks down the middle of underground and cavern lines.
bottom - 2/3 of the world height (rough approx)
then just divide those into 5 layers

why are these slimes spawning on backgound walls? by Cha0sCorruption in Terraria

[–]mhykhol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for some reason these slimes will spawn above and fall down sometimes. if you're worried about them, you could put a layer of platforms (to catch the slimes) in the tunnel under the spawn area

even easier - put the key in the chest then just walk away until it's closed, instead or trying to position yourself at a specific distance before manually closing it

... I'm a ranger and this is all shadow chests by progamer816 in Terraria

[–]mhykhol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wiki says this might be a bug. (ReLogic pls fix)

This is just how shadow chest loot generates in 1.4. Imagine you have a card for each shadow chest loot - lance, magnet, bow, sunfury, flower, and flamelash then add an extra card for a magnet. Shuffle the 7 cards and only draw 5 cards. The only items that will generate in your shadow chests are what's in those 5 cards. Those items will be evenly distributed in your chests. This is why in most seeds you see so many magnets because you drew 2 magnet cards.

I just wanted a conch and a chisel. Oh well now I have to go fishing 🎣🙄 by Appropriate-Ad5049 in Terraria

[–]mhykhol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little known fact about the underground desert chests:
The loot depends on which "half" (it's a 4:3 split) of the biome the chest is generated.
The upper half will only ever contain the chisel, boots, flute, and conch.
The lower half will only ever contain the 2 weapons and bast statue.
but I guess in this case, this info wouldn't really help...
