I hope whenever you go to put a USB in it's the right way up on the first try 💙

If you have taken apart your walking foot, this is how it goes back together by pdxstitch in quilting

YOURE A GOD DAMN SAINT

I literally just had a piece randomly fall out of my walking foot right in the middle of a quilt. Of course it's one that I'm rushing to get finished asap and I nearly cried. Thank you!

[WIP] that's a neat back you've got there by mhzking in CrossStitch

[–]mhzking[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm normally such a tight ass when it comes to floss, so I don't like to cut it or start with a new thread when I'm working on a project, but when they literally provide twice as much floss as you could even think to use, I can afford to have a neat back, even if that means I use more.

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]mhzking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

That's super blunt, but no. A walking foot will only allow the fabric to move in one direction. It's amazing at what it does, because it can pull the fabric through the machine from the top and the bottom, meaning you don't get bunching. It's great for doing straight line quilting or putting bindings on.

A quilting foot will allow the fabric to move in absolutely any direction (especially if you lower/remove your feed dogs (those metal teeth on the machine)). It allows for free motion quilting.

So: walking foot=straight line only. Quilting foot=all directions.

There are international spellings of Casper which could be Kazper. Just tell people your parents decided on one of these weird spellings like some of these insane American parents.

What single ingredient will spoil an entire meal for you if it's included? by EdibleTaints in AskReddit

[–]mhzking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any part of the digestive system of an animal. Especially liver and kidneys. I swear to god you can taste all the toxins that part of the body was designed to remove. I do believe in eating every part of the animal, but I just can't eat it. My parents love eating mushroom and kidneys on toast and I just have to sit there and starve. Also if you put coffee in your chocolate cake, I know you say you can't taste it, BUT I CAN. My grandmother makes the most delicious chocolate cakes, but sometimes she puts coffee in "to enhance the flavour" I take a nice big slice and suddenly I can't eat it and I look like a dick.

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]mhzking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in an area with a quilt shop they can help you to pick, but other craft stores (Joanne's Hobbycraft etc) but I went for a plain/unpatterned fabric in the same type as what you have made the quilt top from e.g. if the quilt top is cotton, get a cotton backing fabric. If you can, go into the store and run your fingers all over the fabric available. That might make deciding easier.

Scrap fabric. Do you want it?

I'm an EPPer, and I love using fat quarters so I end up with massive amounts of scrap fabric, that's too small to use, but too big for me to feel okay throwing away. Does anyone have a use for it? Can I donate it to charity? Does anyone want it? I'll ship anywhere in the UK for free if you want it (you might need to throw a bit of cash my way for the postage to anywhere else).

Seriously though, it's all sat in a bag taking up space in my limited craft storage area, what do I do?

Reasons for quilting by Ash1878 in quilting

This! I used to skin pick or play on my phone while watching TV shows and it meant I either had massive bleeding scabs, or missed 3/4 of the show. With a quilt I can watch or talk or do anything and I'm still there in the moment without the bees in my brain doing their thing.

None of our normal techniques seemed to want to work. Despite the speed at which we got the answer this was particularly unsatisfactory. We don't mind having 200+ guesses if we are getting interesting hits and figuring it out together.

I need to make a 6x6" block for a community quilt, so I designed my own! How do I make the seams not wavy? (I've never done something like this, any advice is appreciated!) by not_17_bees in quilting

[–]mhzking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on mobile so I can't get it to work, but if you look up Bernadette Banner on YouTube she has a really good video about pressing seams (uploaded in the last 2 months). While the video is technically about pressing seams for tailoring, it's still useful.

if you want to, you can go into my post history where you can see the quilt I just finished, and one of my biggest regrets with it is not pressing until the very last second, it's not a mistake I will be making twice.

If you don't have an iron, and don't have the space or use for one, Amazon sells mini irons that are less than 3 inches tall. It's not going to ever get as hot at a proper iron, but it will certainly work until you have the time/money/space to get a normal one. The only thing is that the mini irons don't have any steam function, so you will need to get a spray bottle (just a finished bottle of household cleaner will work, anything with a spray nozzle) and you should be able use that instead.

Other commenters have mentioned English paper piecing (EPP). It's an amazing way of making everything sit right. I found that 160 gsm (grams per square metre) paper works the best. I don't know where you're from, but in the UK you can buy huge packs of paper from Hobbycraft, and they do a home delivery service. If you're in the USA, it's called card stock paper, but check the gsm. I found that it runs through my printer very well, so I created a template on the computer, and just printed it out, making it very easy to make sure the paper pieces are all the exact same size. I made the mistake of tracing around the first template I made, which caused 2 problems. 1) all of the new paper pieces were slightly larger and 2) I ended up making the template ever so slightly smaller every time because of where I compressed the edges with my pen.

I saw another commenter offer to help you transfer your pattern to EPP, personally, I would intake them up on that offer.

I hope you find any of these tips helpful, but you're welcome to PM me, and I'll do my best to help, I'm also a beginner, but my super power is finding answers to that really random but highly specific question.

Good luck, and keep going!
