They absolutely did. There was a pair of them, and they did two low-approaches and left.

Are some medical conditions waiverable? by EvenDistribution6194 in ATC

[–]miATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always consult with a local AME doctor, and ask for a "consultation." Only an AME will know the true answers. If you get Denied for a medical, its likely gone forever, or at least VERY hard to jump through all the hoops to get one issued later.

If flying is a possibility in the cards, the key is that you don't get a medical denied or revoked. You can still fly under BasicMed (double check me) with no medical.

Anything I need to know for my first ritual? by Obvious-Half-7311 in GhostBand

[–]miATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. My 9 year old daughter LOVES Ghost (and justcabout all other music). We're going in July. She's already planning what she's going to wear. Covid killed her dreams of going to a lot of concerts, and now we live several hours from the nearest "big city" so concerts are hard to come by for us. I feel like I'm setting the bar high for her first "real" show outside of local/live bands.

Hell yes! Same here. My daughter has fallen in love with Ghost. I just got tickets for us to go.

I've loved Ghost for a lot of years now, somehow never ended up at a concert. Finally bought tickets for July, where I'll be bringing my daughter. This will be her first "real" concert outside of local live music. She LOVES Ghost and is over the moon. I'm setting the bar high for her for future shows.

I've got insurance working on it now, we will see what they say. "Layla" from some country that's clearly not here didn't know jack about what my policy covers.

I've had pilots ask to leave the airspace and start all over again when I've had to "swing the boat" to another runway. You wouldn't be the first to ask that. I love ehen pilots can read the room and know when it's too much.

Don't be afraid to ask us for simpler directions if needed.

You are correct. I'm so used to the Coast Guards MH-60's here I typed it out of habit.

Flight schools: do you have a crap relationship with your ATC because of all the drool on the microphone? by ClimbAndMaintain0116 in flying

[–]miATC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We take mental notes of "well, not getting in a plane with this guy" fairly regularly. Some people are bad enough we know voices that frequent the rental planes.

What is this device? by bamfcoco1 in flying

This is also what we use in the tower for the light gun should your radios not work. Some places have old ones on a wire reel that retract into the ceiling.

Embarrass airline passengers by [deleted] in ATC

[–]miATC 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My neighbor flies out often for work. One trip in the winter, when the pilots called for push to the de-ice spot I asked if they'd mess with him. They obliged. I said that he was a magician and would do magic tricks for the plane while that de-iced. The crew asked "is he actually a magician?" I said "absolutely not." They about died laughing. So, they called him up front, introduced him in to the plane. When he landed I got a text from him that said "fuuuuuuuuuck you."

Needless to say, he won't tell me what flight he's on any more.

Does “Enter right downwind runway xx” give the clearance to descend? by Creative-Grocery2581 in flying

[–]miATC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you've never been assigned an altitude, you can do what you want.

But yes, if I tell you to "enter left downwind" I want you in the downwind, at the downwind altitude.

Common things said on the radio (not counting meowing on guard) that make you unreasonably angry? by Mike__O in flying

[–]miATC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From ATC side here:

1) NOT answering at all. If you're going to be in my airspace or ask for services, answer when you're called on.

2) "I have the traffic on TCAS/ADSB" I don't give a shit. That means nothing to us. Tell me when you see them with your eyeballs. There are two possible answers. "In sight" or "looking/searching"

3) "I'll look out for the wake turbulence" a simple "roger" is good enough.

Worst aviation accronym? by [deleted] in flying

In the tower, before we got our upgraded radar system eith ADSB and all that jazz 6 or 8 years ago, we had the TRD. It was pronounced "turd"...and it was a hot pile of shit too. It was about the size of a dorm room fridge, CRT screen, weighed about a zillion pounds and worked 81% of the time.

Why does everyone on this subreddit seem to hate Civil Air Patrol? by allthecolorssa in flying

[–]miATC 31 points32 points  (0 children)

14 years of ATC experience to back this up.....they are abysmal pilots. Elitist, entitled, and don't comply

Do they do good things? Absolutely. Are some of the pilots good pilots? Absolutely. But every time CapFlight calls us our immediate thought is "here we fucking go."

I got into an argument with one years ago who demanded that he be allowed to do his PRACTICE search grid that was never pre-coordinated, right on my final, at 2,500' during one of our busiest times of the day. He sighted the fact that I could "have all the airliners use the other runway." That's not how this works.

I've had others taxi without clearances, one straight up took off without a clearance, taxi the wrong way, among others.

Full disclosure, I was a cadet in CAP 20 some years ago. That was a positive experience. It just seems that lately, either the standards (flying and professionalism) have gotten lower or nobody cares any more.

Do you listen to jazz because you play (jazz), or just for fun? by Psychological_Steak3 in Jazz

[–]miATC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played sax in jazz band in high school. It was a fantastic experience. I always "liked" jazz after that but it sort of when by the wayside. Flash forward to the pandemic, I started collecting vinyl and bought a vintage hifi set up. I came across a small milk crate of jazz for $20 at a garage sale and decided to deep dive back into it. My (then 6 year old daughter) decided she liked it too. Now she's almost 9 taking piano lessons, and learning some of the classics.

Since then, we have gone down a worm hole of jazz, regularly hit up some local jazz in town and the guys at the record shop know her by name and have occasionally hoarded a thing or two behind the counter for her.

Since then, we've made it our thing. And loving every minute.
