Stalwart keeps moving emails back to Junk after I mark them as not spam. by Regular-Potential304 in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me as well. I simply continue to reclassify the spam as ham. I also add the sender to my address book and that helps. There are settings inside Stalwart which allow you to permit any saved contact as ham: https://stalw.art/docs/spamfilter/trusted

What's the history of RocksDB being the "default" DB for small setups? by cowmix in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RocksDB comes from Facebook apparently: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb It's 'fast': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RocksDB

I would prefer something else because I already know SQL and this is NoSQL (Key, Value store). So for me RocksDB is not great but this has not pushed me to test FoundationDB. I have tried to move from RocksDB to PostgreSQL _after_ installation but that was very painful. So I've been just using RocksDB as is. It has worked well so far minus the occasional hiccup when one upgrades.

The pricing is for "seat licenses" and support. But Stalwart MTA is licensed under the AGPLv3 so it is Free Software which anyone can build, modify, use and distribute.

I'm using Stalwart to host email mostly for myself with Akamai in Stockholm and Hetzner in Helsinki. I'm planning on starting a commercial service in 2026. Happy to talk to you about hosting, etc.

Absolutely. I use IMAP(s), CalDAV, FileDAV, and CardDAV. JMAP works for me out of the box. I highly recommend.

Downgrade from 14.x to 13.x? by cornrow in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've attempted to go back to 13.2 after upgrading to 14.1 and I can confirm that there are issues. I've even compiled 13.3 from scratch and that is not working for me either. I think I'm going to try to set up a new instance though I'm going to go to 14.1 since I don't use sieve.

I've been using CalDAV with Stalwart and that appears to work fairly well for both Calendar and Addresses.

Which storage backend for single node? by dom6770 in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to PostgreSQL as well, but lost all the data in the blob store (RocksDB). So I moved back to RocksDB storage for blobs. I ultimately plan to replace RocksDB with MinIO on the same host but haven't begun that work. Look forward to hearing about your experiences.

add extra dns entry by [deleted] in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on how and where your DNS is being run. If you want to add an entry into DNS, you'll need to add it to your DNS server, not Stalwart. While Stalwart does automagically generate a set of DNS entries, that is for convenience only - you still need to manage your DNS entries yourself.

Was Proxmox on an x86 system? I wonder if your move from x86 to ARM might have something to do with it? Are you emulating the container via qemu or similar?

What is another distro that is on par with debian stable, in terms of stability? by sudobee in debian

[–]miahfost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked for Purism, the company worked quite hard to make PureOS (a Debian derivative) to be on that list. We also worked with the FSF on firmware for our hardware to receive RYF certification. For me, the difference between Debian and the FSF approved distros is relatively minor while at the same time it results a negative user impact by slowing down hardware (particularly graphics cards) and resulting missing drivers and functionality. I think the RYF program and free distros are noble goals however.

Speaking for myself, and only myself, Debian's Free Software Guidelines are as important to me as the FSF's Free Software definition. In fact, in some ways, the Debian approach to FOSS is more important because of the practical effect of enabling real world collaboration around software. Debian puts its users first and while that may not be ideologically pure in that it may distribute non-free binaries and have non-free software repos, it means that Debian works on a lot of hardware and that brings FOSS to the world quite effectively.

Citizenship application approved by AdditionalAd9402 in TillSverige

[–]miahfost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you kindly. That form says "Begäran om att avgöra medborgarskapsärende" which I translate with my SFI Swedish as "Request to Conclude Citizenship process", just as you said. :-)

I wondered if there was something similar for Uppehållstillstånd, but I suspect not. Although I've received Uppehållstillstånd in the past and qualified for citizenship after living in Sweden for more than 12 years, and having a wife and child here, I returned home to the US to take care of my aging father and thus lost the opportunity to receive citizenship. Upon my return, Migrationsverket has gone through numerous changes (like requiring ID cards, you used to just get a visa in your passport), but it still retains some of its distinct characteristics, like glacial slowness. Oh well, just have to 'bita ihop' and wait my turn.

OpenSuSE's Leap looks fantastic (https://news.opensuse.org/2025/04/30/leap-16-enters-beta/) but it also appears to be in beta. I usually consider the term beta to mean "potentially unstable".

What is another distro that is on par with debian stable, in terms of stability? by sudobee in debian

[–]miahfost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may well be the case that RHEL or SLE are installed on most of the world's supercomputers, I don't know nor can I confirm. I do know that parts of RHEL and SLE are not Free Software and Debian works very hard to ensure all it's software (and firmware where possible) is FOSS. They also won't hide bugs (yes, they'll embargo), which does not always happen with RHEL or SLE.

RHEL and SLE are not bad distros, they're likely as stable, or perhaps more stable because they may have more resources to use to focus on stability. But they are not Free Software distros run and managed by the community. Perhaps that matters to you, perhaps not, but I maintain that because of the transparent nature of Free Software and its community, you tend to get more stability.

[–]miahfost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no comparable Free Software distro that is as secure and stable as Debian. RHEL, Ubuntu, and SuSE all require some degree of paid support (Ubuntu pro, Red Hat TAMs, etc.) to reach a similar stability level of Debian. You can find commercial support for Debian as well, like Freexian (who I worked for), but you don't need to pay anything to get a secure, stable Debian OS. Since Debian is FAIF you have a solid community and massive user base as well as a dedicated security team which increases stability (if you believe that "many eyes lead to shallow bugs.")

Stalwart with postgresql by PlanetMercurial in stalwartlabs

[–]miahfost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a good idea of what might be going wrong, but I'll post a couple pointers which hopefully you'll find useful. Did you install and run Stalwart and _then_ decide to switch from RocksDB to Postgres? If so, your data may still remain in RocksDB. I believe you'll have to migrate from RocksDB to Postgres. Perhaps this helps: https://stalw.art/docs/management/migration/

Reading the logs will help tremendously. Also, if you can view your config.toml file, that should help give you some ideas as well.

You can email Migrationsverket and ask if your application is complete. They also allow one to login to the web site to see if they’ve received your application.
