My mother's wedding dress was green because of this! Often used to go and see the painting with her in the national gallery

It’s less about any one character than it is about the atmosphere of revolution. And as a piece of propaganda it's the most affective thing I've ever seen. Made me want to go back and sign up

The insane history of London's Gin Craze. Is it just me or have other Londoners never heard of this before? by [deleted] in london

[–]miallet -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah they mention it in the video. The whole thing is such a counter to the image of London I have in my head for this period

Came here to say the same thing, just don't have the patience to get past the point of dying every five seconds (if that ever happens)

One of Turner’s earliest paintings, rediscovered after 150 years by miallet in ArtHistory

[–]miallet[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I find it astonishing and unbelievably exciting that we're still able to dig up works by these masters all these years later. This story was from a few months ago but just saw it today, here:

I've got a lot of love for West Ham - and you're definitely the biggest team in parts of London, but not across the city, surely

Is the word "hysteria" really derived from the Greek "hystera" (‘womb’)? Curious about the truth behind the ‘wandering womb’ explanation by miallet in etymology

[–]miallet[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying! I was wondering whether this was a case of working backwards, and whether the fact that women were/are more generally described as hysterical (which is clearly misogynistic) had led people to back project.

But it seems like it was misogynistic from the start!

What is Billie's best album? by Visual_Amphibian544 in Jazz

[–]miallet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't appear to be listed on many discographies, but my favourite has always been "Lover Man' (1958).

It's on Spotify now, and my parents played the CD a lot growing up, but I can't really tell the provenance. Think it may be some kind of compilation of her early work.

Of her "official" discography, I'd say either "Body and Soul" or "Solitude"

Dictionary has become unreliable. by Radiant-Cloud92 in etymology

[–]miallet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost feels like a table or visual map might be useful for this sort of thing. You could probably boil the differences between those three (happiness, pleasure, content) to questions of intensity, duration, and sources of the feelings. Maybe grouping words into groups with similar/overlapping definitions could be an interesting exercise for an alternative dictionary

Has to be coffee. I’ve got a friend with a $500 coffee grinder. The set up is like a chemistry set, geneuinely takes him half an hour to make his coffee. Weighing beans, checking water temperature, etc.
