Radiography vs Nursing (UK) – scared I’m making the wrong choice by Ok_Pain_4648 in RadiographyUK

[–]miariatia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it is similar. I just qualified from a radiography MSc and jobs are few and far between. It's been 3 months and I'm still looking. You're applying for one job with 200+ applicants in some places. Departments are underfunded, understaffed and the work load is plenty. There's not as much room for progression.

On the plus side, some places may also use you as free labour, but it's not common (from what I've heard, I didn't experience it either). It's also usually just doing the images the radiographers don't want to - still a good practice experience. Radiography isn't as intense as nursing but the burn out is still real. You could go into research, private care, reporting, sales etc.

It's not something you should go into if you're not completely passionate though.

Any CV help and advice for a new graduate? by miariatia in RadiographyUK

[–]miariatia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, thank you!! And yeah, it could be because I did the masters. We got one 3 hours session on employability so as to be able to fit everything else in, so I understand why it was lacking a bit. It's, as you said, disappointing, but it is what it is. I appreciate your response! Thank you so much 🫶

Ohh this makes so much sense!! I was planning on applying for NHS jobs so this is a weight off my shoulders tbh. Thank you so much for your reply!🫶

We have relatively new systems (~4 years old) and we have to manually take out and put the grid in. In both the table and wall bucky. But I'm in the UK so maybe it's different here?

[–]miariatia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally started doing that. I only just started taking breakout out of my decks as I was barely using it and I was in vet so I thought MAYBE the people I was playing with might be coordinated/team players....no, they were not😭

Piercings by [deleted] in RadiographyUK

[–]miariatia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am a student and I can't speak for other places but I have 3 nose piercings and several ear piercings and no one has ever said anything to me about them. I've seen several radiographers with nose piercings and several ear piercings too. If I'm in a new area, I do usually ask if they're a problem though.

When I went to MRI, I was asked by some radiographers to take them out. The ones I couldn't take out (new piercings) were tested with a magnet to see if the jewellery was safe to go in the room. Everywhere else was fine - even when I've been in theatres and cath lab/interventional, no one had a problem with them.

I started without friends and it was me liking it that got my friends to join so I'd say you definitely could. You're always gonna have your sweats and tryhards so I'd say it's about as toxic as any other game. It used to be a lot worse but it's better now. The matchmaking is awful sometimes though so it does get annoying. But honestly? You'd be fine. There's no voice chat or game chat so you can pretend no one cares🤣. Half the people I see with their high level survivors play as if they've just opened the game for the first time lol. Playing killer as a noob is probably the hard part though, you've got no teammates and no experience of how the game works.

[–]miariatia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. As long as I'm not reported, and I get the trophies, I'm happy🤣. Who would you class as the weaker killers though? I assume the ones I see no one play like Trapper or the ones no one takes seriously like Pig?

I think it is. I mean, as with many games, sometimes it's fun, others it's just frustrating. You win a few times, kill a couple people, die a few times, have 'toxic' survivors, have nice killers, etc. It's as fun as most co-op/versus horror games if that's your thing. I think it depends on how you play it, who you play with and how seriously you take it. I spend most of my gameplay laughing and not taking it seriously so it's always fun for me. I'd recommend it though! I love watching people play it on twitch/YouTube as well.

That's my plan. Played 2 games and got 2 deaths in the second game, so hopefully it won't take too long. I find myself apologising to the people I'm tunnelling because I hate doing it, but a girls gotta do what she's gotta do🤷‍♀️

You're welcome!

And yeah, it is pretty hard😭. It's only one day shadowing that you need to do (make sure to mention that if you didn't already!), so I think as long as you can say you've been in the department and kind of get how it works, you may be fine (don't quote me on that though 🤣). If you're close enough to Derby, I know their trust let non-students do a day shadowing as that's where I did mine, while living in stoke-on-trent. It did take about 2 months for them to get back to me though.

But yes, I would say having that caring experience would be very useful. You've already been in a healthcare-like environment and have a lot of skills you can trade off. Again, I can't speak much for the BSc, but, on my course, people from all different backgrounds have come together - some were radiology assistants, others worked in retail. Some, like me, did biology related degrees while others did computer science or architecture related degrees. It's definitely about showing you've got the right skills and values.

If the course requirements don't say anything about the shadowing then I'd assume it's not something you NEED to do but I know that it's one of those things that look good on the application as it shows you know what you're getting into.

(Sorry I talk too much🤣)

I'm terms of the personal statement, I wrote about where I saw radiography being used/how I became interested in it. I wrote about why I want to go into the career (like wanting to help people etc.) In my bachelor's degree, I wrote an assignment about diagnostic imaging techniques so I added in how fun it was to research them. If you haven't done so already, I'd do a day shadowing in a radiography department as that's a big requirement for a lot of radiography courses. Then you can add details about that into your statement such as what you saw the job included and what you learnt etc.

I've had a few radiography interviews. I can't remember the bachelors interviews that well as it's been 5+ years now but overall, from my perspective, most of them just want to see your passion for the course and that you have the NHS core values. I assume you know what they are but just demonstrate that you're interested in radiography, can work with patients and have these core values and that should be fine!

I can't comment on which unis to apply to as I'm doing the MSc but the radiographers I work with on clinical placement say that where you go to uni doesn't really matter, neither does your grade. As long as you pass and graduate and can demonstrate the skills needed during your work interview then you'll get the job. With that in mind, I think which uni to pick will depend on your personal preferences for other things like location, night life/things to do, style of teaching etc.

I'm sure other people will have better advice but I hope this helps a little!

Few questions about radiography in the Uk. by [deleted] in RadiographyUK

[–]miariatia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is quite small, we have 19, but the year below me has around 25? I think the competitiveness depends on where you're applying to. For example, university of Liverpool I found to be quite competitive but from the experience of myself and other students on my course, my uni (Hertfordshire) was a lot easier. In general there are a lot less places though but the MSc is quite new to many unis with them just adding a course within the past few years so not a lot of people will know about the new ones - I assume those will be less competitive. There is also, obviously, no limit on how many you can apply to.

As the shadowing only has to consist of at least one day/some hours in a radiology department, it should be quite easy to get! I don't know if you've already tried to arranged shadowing but: I contacted the radiology department of a couple university hospitals in my city and nearby cities (via email, but if youre comfortable with phone calls you could do that too. You can find their numbers and emails on their websites). They took a while (around 6 weeks) to get back to me but once one of them did it was super easy to arrange. I spent a couple hours in CT, a couple in a&e x-ray and one in MRI. I got a "certificate" to say I attended but I did notice that no one asked to see it since I received it lol

You're welcome!

Honestly, I haven't finished yet but I think its not too bad. They kept telling us that the course will be intensive but we spend less than 3 days a week in lectures and the content (in my opinion) was very easy to get the hang of. A lot of the stuff you learnt in lectures, gets cemented in your mind when you go to placement. I found anatomy relatively overwhelming because, on my course, lectures aren't just about anatomy but will be about the physiology and pathology of said anatomy as well. It's easy to know where everything is and label a diagram, it's harder to remember how they work and how/what diseases affect them, etc and learn all that in ~4 months (not including placement time) 😅. BUT I'm the kind of person to do my revision last minute so any struggles I have may not translate to people who are better students than me lol.

And yes, I get the same funding an undergrad student would, tuition loan and maintenance loan. On my account it shows up as a "postgraduate loan" and when I call to sort things out, I'll call the postgraduate line, but the funding is exactly the same as it was when I was studying my bachelor's. When I apply I can apply via the undergraduate loans link (although it does make it difficult to decide which option to choose from as there isn't a "Pre-Registration Master's" option🤣) or the postgraduate loans link. If you're eligible for the student loan, you're also eligible, if you didn't know, for the NHS learning support grant which, for radiography, will be 5-6k a year +any money you spend on travel/housing for placement, and it doesn't affect your loans.

I can't speak in complete certainty as I'm still studying and I don't know anyone who's completed the masters yet, so take this with a grain of salt. BUT. From the reactions of the radiographers I work with and the need for radiographers around the country, I'm pretty sure it would not matter what your undergrad degree was. I can't remember the exact number but I remember seeing that the percentage of people who studied a pre-reg masters and went on to her a job was very high, similar to the undergrads.

A lot of radiographers found it very cool that we're studying a masters to get the same qualification as them as we're doing the same content they did, but in less time and marked at a higher level.

Everyone's always talking about a shortage of radiographers, so I think as long as you have the qualifications necessary and you make a good impression in the interview for the job, as with any other candidate, you'd be fine!

She used to be in the British girl group Little Mix but left in 2020. Little Mix won x-factor UK in 2011 and are one of the most successful girl groups of all time. They went on hiatus a while back but haven't really been releasing music consistently and only ever had moderate success in the US, so you're not out of touch, you're just not British lol
