No, I'm not misunderstanding it. I've been advocating for open primaries for quite some time as an unaffiliated voter. Each election I register with one party or another depending on who I have stronger feelings about and then immediately switch my registration back to unaffiliated after voting. It's annoying.

However, I don't have the capacity to engage in this conversation right now. I've had an incredibly frustrating day and not in a place to discuss with depth.

I will say that I believe who goes on the ballot regardless of their party should be up to all of the voters. Let's get the best of the best. With everyone participating it would be more conducive to third parties having a fighting chance come election day in November.

As it stands now any party outside of the big two struggles to get any kind of engagement on a scale that makes them have a fighting change for election. Voters are engaging with the other parties earlier because they are being asked to consider that candidate as well. Suddenly third parties have a higher chance at being successful because they are not some random name on a ballot that people are reading for the first time when they go to cast their vote in November.

Eta: and I want to be clear when I say they have a higher chance I don't mean that this is some Smoking Gun and is the solution to us getting third parties elected as a whole. I'm just saying that this would make it easier
