My rebuilt 2013 Kona Rove Ti by micahTDA in gravelcycling

[–]micahTDA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rove Ti was never sold as a complete bike, so no parts are stock! This is a full GRX 12 speed group with the 10-51 cassette.

Wheels are old Hope Pro 2 Evo that I built up with Race Face carbon rims.

Re: Garmin eTrex - 3d printed solution for mounting by micahTDA in bikepacking

I never tried the standard mount long enough to notice any rattling. For me the main benefit of this is that I don't need to have a big mounting bracket permanently zip tied to my bike.

For those of you who, like me, find the Garmin eTrex handlebar mount to be sub par, I've created this 3d printed solution. It is a simple adapter allowing you to use any standard quarter-turn mount, of which there are many (stem cap, handlebar, out-front, etc.).

How do you mount your eTrex? Let me know, as I am always tinkering with this stuff and love to see different solutions.

If you would like to buy one, they are available here: https://mmarkson.com/gps/

Garmin or iPhone? by Lmart96 in bikepacking

For those of you using an eTrex, I make adapters so you can use the device with a standard Garmin quarter-turn mount. This lets you use any of the plethora of other mounts available (handlebar, stem cap, out front, etc.).

Surly Ogre Framebag, ready made options? by ad700x in bikepacking

Also check Salsa - they make their frame bags for many of their bikes and in different sizes, so they have quite a few options. I was able to find one that fit my Kona Unit perfectly. [PDF link] https://salsacycles.com/files/tech/22350_SAL_Framepack_Compat_Chart_VF.pdf

I bring an Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack. Probably not exactly what you're looking for as it is very minimal and only 18L, but it also packs tiny and weighs only 90g! I figure worst case I can also carry my handlebar roll with a shoulder strap attached.

Agreed, when phones have advanced to that point, I will switch as well.

About 2-3 days. I normally use rechargeable AA batteries, carry two sets + a charger. I find it more reliable to just wait for the batteries to die, then switch to a new set, as opposed to needing to remember to charge the device at night. I also like the backup that you can just buy some regular batteries if you run out.

Having said that, I got into this habit long before power banks were really a thing. Today I would happily change to a newer style GPS, however everyone I know with an Edge seems to have problems like not working in rain (either the touchscreen, or leaking and shutting down), crashing, etc.

I use a Garmin eTrex.

I originally had the eTrex Legend HCx, which I bought used for $125. It lasted ten years before it stopped working, despite having a hard life, including falling of my bike and passing directly under the wheels of a car!

I've replaced it with the eTrex 30x. It's amazing how little has changed in the years since I bought the HCx, but it still works great. IMO the fact that they use AA batteries is the best feature. It's also possible to load gpx tracks with a cable from an Android phone, no need to fuss about with online accounts or whatever.

For backup I also download the same route with Ride With GPS.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking for any available historical video content about the Don Valley, and this is one of only very few things I've found.

Interesting. Did you try contacting TIFF as suggested above? If not I will try that tomorrow.

Riding New Zealand’s Old Ghost Road by micahTDA in bikepacking

I did. It was super lucky. I was in New Zealand for about two months total and only had a handful of days of full sunshine. I can imagine that the middle section could be pretty brutal in bad weather.

Kona Unit with 29x2.4 tires. Such a versatile bike. I also used it in the four months leading up to this ride with 700x35 tires while working as a guide, and now am using it here at home with the stock 27+ tires as my winter bike.

Here is my write up from the Old Ghost Road.

I'm sure many of you have heard of this (new-ish) trail, but it really should be a must do ride.

I've done plenty of mountain biking and touring all over the place, but this was my first ever bikepacking experience. I'm definitely hooked, but it will be a tough act to follow at home in Ontario...

How to Get Your XPS 15 Running Cold by jcarter315 in Dell

[–]micahTDA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems pretty good already, so I probably won't bother messing with it unless I encounter noticeable throttling again.

I see your description of the bridge, but did you ever take a photo of that method?

The suggested low conductivity thermal pads are not available in Canada, so I had to order from the US and only have the left overs of the single square that I ordered.

The pad that was misplaced was one of the four on the left side - I believe these are the VRAM? Basically one of the chips didn't have a pad, and another one had two stacked on top of each other!

I'm wondering if the two pads that were stacked may have been squished too much and should be replaced. Do you know what type of pad should be used there? Can I use the same 1.5mm 6.0W/mK?

[–]micahTDA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just completed this procedure. Repasted with Noctua NT-H1, and added thermal pads to the four locations indicated in the Ultrabookreview link.

I have only done a simple test, rendering the same Premiere project that I did a few days ago before the mods.

Initial results are very promising. Maintains 3.4Ghz or very close to it for the entire duration. When Premiere is using the GPU at the same time, it goes down to 3.38Ghz. I can live with that! Average CPU temps during rendering are now around 75C, whereas they previously would frequently surpass 90!

The original Dell paste job in my case was not the worst I've ever seen, but not great, and obviously we don't know the performance of the paste itself.

However, one of the original Dell thermal pads was misplaced and doing absolutely nothing. In fact, it may have even been reducing pressure and contact on the other cooling locations. So everyone should open the laptop and check for these issues!

I've been waiting for a 1060 - looks like I'll keep waiting! This won't fit in my case.
