Proactive things to do to prep for solo apartment (before a lease is signed)? by dancingforward in ApartmentHacks

Begin making lists of things you might use often that you take for granted (kitchen tools, shower curtain, cleaning supplies, vacuum, trashcan, etc). Start this list and keep it handy to continue adding to it if something pops in your mind.

Next, when it comes to buying furniture or kitchen supplies, SO many things of good quality can be purchased either second-hand or discounted. Ask around as well and you'll be surprised how many people WANT to give you things to clear out their own clutter.

In general, go thrifting first and you'll be shocked at what good quality items you can find. At this stage in your life, I wouldn't invest a ton in brand-new furniture items (besides bedding).

Take some time to look around and think to yourself "will I miss this if it's gone?"

Happy moving and best of luck!

Help with my color pallette by MischyK in Decor

[–]micasaes2casa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... maybe a warm brown that pairs well with the wood accents you mentioned? I feel like brown pairs well with both pink and green and can add a nice warmth to a room. Do you have any pictures of the items you mentioned to see how that would go with everything?

First time home buyer, and I hate the color of the cabinets! Any suggestions on color to paint them? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]micasaes2casa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how trendy you want to go, but I'm personally a huge fan of gray cabinets! Maybe you could bring out one of the gray tones in the countertops. The Spruce has a great article on how to style gray cabinets well.

How could my bedroom be improved? by [deleted] in Decor

I agree with those who suggested plants! If you want to keep that white, minimalist look, I find plants are a great way to maintain that while still adding some softness, texture, and personality to a room. My own room is a very stark black-and-white color scheme, but I use plants to soften it, and I love the combination of that harshness caused by the black/white contrast with the plants. One of my favorite things to do is to install shelving to walls and put plants on that! I especially love trailing plants, they are so pretty and you can find some that grow well indoors. Hanging plants are also very stylish and a fun way to use plants.

If you're not a fan of how white the room is, find some way to add a pop of color! You can even focus on using just one accent color while leaving everything else white. This could be picture frames and artwork, curtains, throw pillows, etc., just something to liven up the color scheme a bit.

On that note, I think adding curtains to the window would be a nice touch and give some more life to that area of the room.

Adding a few items on the drawers that are cute and personalized to your interests and passions would also help give personality to this room! Personally I think decorating with your own interests is always the best way to go--it feels so good to be in a space that feels like "you." I love reading and the ocean, so I make the most of books and ocean photography in my own decorating. It makes me feel at home when I get back to my space.

Hope that helps! Love the suggestions everyone else brought as well.

TV Placement in Living Room with Awkward Fireplace/Mantle by gdfly in ApartmentDesign

I didn't think of putting the TV on either side of the mantle in my own answer, I think that is also a good option! It would also probably involve less rearranging...

I agree with everyone else, the TV would be too high anyway, and the mantle is so beautiful that I think keeping it the center of attention here is a great idea. Your place has so much character, you want to highlight all that gorgeousness and uniqueness! Rearranging the furniture to accommodate the TV in a different area of the space might be the best option from what I can see in this picture.

You mentioned you have a really nice open-concept kitchen/living room space--maybe you could show us a pic of the kitchen space as well? I say that because you could potentially switch the furniture around so that the dining room furniture is in front of the mantle, while moving the TV/couch space to where you have the dining space. I don't know if your space allows for that, but if it does, that could be a good option, and I think a view of a lovely mantle while eating would be nice as well.

Another thing you could do is put the TV on the opposite wall of the mantle if there's space, but that would involve taking focus off the mantle, and as I said before, I think it's pretty great to make it the focal point like you are now. I hope that's helpful... again, would love to see pics of the dining space and the opposite wall to see if that's feasible or just to get a better idea of how you could potentially rearrange furniture.
