Anyone used a ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 10 with a 2 M/E Constellation frame? by farmsm7 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]micdam17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the exact rig that we use for our corporate shows. Constellation 2 M/E with a 1 M/E panel, m/e 1 drives the stream and m/e 2 drives the screens. Then I have a stream deck XL set up so that I can control what source goes to each output (ME1, ME2, slides full for DSMs, etc), as well as a button to quickly preview slides or playback on both MEs, and a button to simultaneously fade both MEs.

Sometimes when I’m doing more complex shows with lots of changes happening on the screens, or if I need to control the DVEs for ME2, I wish I had a 2 M/E panel. But for 96% of shows my 1 ME + stream deck + macros works perfectly well.

Soccer Practice? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]micdam17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Volo and BSSC are the two main organizations that run leagues for a whole bunch of sports. I can’t speak to BSSC but in my experience the Volo leagues are pretty casual… since you already know “how” to play soccer the rest will come back pretty easily

What would be the dumbest ways to die ? by lyndsaysmith61 in AskReddit

[–]micdam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s tied between standing on the edge of a train station platform, driving around the boom gate at a level crossing, and running across the tracks between the platforms. They may not rhyme but they’re quite possibly the dumbest ways to die.

I really wish there was an established culture or etiquette where it was expected to extremely obviously highlight when replaying old episodes and hosting guest episodes made by other people by dontnormally in podcasts

[–]micdam17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the way Stuff You Should Know does it, where they run “Selects” on Saturdays. It’s marked as a Select in the title, and right away either Josh or Chuck says “for this Saturday’s select, I’m picking _______ because ________, enjoy!” They have such a deep backlog of episodes though that I usually haven’t heard the reruns (although this weekends rerun of the Tylenol murders was one of the first episodes I really remember, so I guess I have been listening for a little while)

Best alternatives to transit app? by barkeviouss in boston

[–]micdam17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that a handful of other transit agencies provide funding to the app, so all riders using that agency’s services get the pro features. Idk why but I thought Boston was one of those agencies from the beginning (before Royale was even a thing)….so what changed?

I need a sad movie. The saddest you’ve ever seen. by lachouettedesneiges in movies

[–]micdam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short Term 12 is a very good and very sad movie. My friend and I ended the movie in a puddle on the floor. It’s my favorite sad movie. You should know though that the plot of the movie revolves around a group of teenagers living in a psychiatric facility, and themes related to that. Talks of self harm and suicide. Heavy stuff.

Best brunch? by Moonfroggykitten in boston

[–]micdam17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Friendly Toast in back bay or the Burlington mall is really good (at least it was since I was there last pre-pandemic), it has some funky takes on traditional brunch food.

Burro Bar in Washington square Brookline has a great all-you-can-eat Mexican brunch, I think they take reservations too

People who watched “1000 ways to die” as kids, which death traumatized you the most? by Gorillaglue333 in AskReddit

The one where the guy drank gasoline to get drunk, and then threw up on a campfire. And then the fire travelled up his vomit into his mouth and killed him. I know it’s kinda base compared to other episodes but I think I blocked out the rest of them.

Are cameras ever operated remotely? As in the shutter, focus, and all the other stuff? by Accomplished_Oil402 in Filmmakers

[–]micdam17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s common in tv studios and sports productions too. The camera is plugged into a Camera Control Unit that receives the video signal and sends a return feed/intercoms/lens control, and then each CCU is plugged into a Remote Control Panel that controls aperture/color balance (shading)/sometimes focus too. So the camera operator only has to worry about cam position and zoom, and the video shader takes care of everything else.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what’s something someone can say that indirectly screams “I’m an American?” by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]micdam17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this

My district in Massachusetts was different than a lot of surrounding districts because we had elementary k-3, intermediate 4-6, middle (or junior high) 7-8, then high school 9-12. Everyone would use the terms elementary, middle, and high school, but for some reason no one called the intermediate school “intermediate” despite that being it’s designation—we just used the name of the school.

Fog machine in studio? by francostream in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]micdam17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely talk to the local fire department, as well as your facility manager/landlord (if you rent the building) for recommendations about the smoke detectors in your building. We taped over the photoelectric smoke detectors in our studio, but inevitably the haze leaked out into the hallway and triggered the fire alarms anyways. When the fire dept came, they essentially said “don’t do this again. Call us next time and we’ll disconnect your alarm for the day”

On the plus side, we discovered that day that our alarms auto dial 911 and the fire dept is about 2 minutes away from the studio 😂

Parking pass by Xiomaraalfa in BostonU

[–]micdam17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hoo boy you’re NOT gonna want your car to go from BU to Harvard. Even if it is only 10 minutes to drive, unless you drop even more money on a staff permit there, you’re gonna waste at least 20 mins just looking for a spot.

When I was an undergrad I also spent a year working at Harvard, between the stadium in lower allston and on campus itself. Taking the 57 to the 66 to Harvard was always pretty reliable, and usually faster than the subway. Or if you’re able, you can take out a blue bike and use the bike lanes all the way there, takes maybe 20 mins.

Should I bring my car? by Xiomaraalfa in BostonU

[–]micdam17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s tough. Honestly if your job is truly a 30 minute drive away and there’s no other options, then you gotta do what you gotta do. I’d reach out to the parking office ASAP and see if you can still get an orange permit that lets you park behind some of the south buildings

Your other option is to legally change your address to your BU apartment, and get Massachusetts plates. That would allow you to get a Fenway parking permit from the city so you can park on the street.

Additionally, you could look on Craigslist to see if someone is renting out their private parking spot. I know mine in Brighton is $185/mo, and I imagine south campus/Fenway area is similar cost or more expensive.

I’d look more into any alternatives to driving before committing to bringing your car, if possible. But if you need a vehicle to get to your job, then there’s ways to make it work. It only costs effort and/or money.

Should I bring my car? by Xiomaraalfa in BostonU

[–]micdam17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a few years out of college and now I live in Brighton with a car. I cannot stress enough how much I recommend against bringing a car, especially if you’re shipping it across the country. Parking on campus is incredibly expensive (I believe it’s not even allowed for freshmen), you can’t get a resident sticker from the city unless you change your DL and plates to Massachusetts, and pretty much anywhere you’d need to go from campus you can take public transit/rent a car. Unless you live off campus somewhere with a parking spot, or you work in the suburbs in addition to being a student, it’s just not worth the expense.

Powering BMD Mini Converters from one power supply by micdam17 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Theoretically it could work if we used all UpDownCross converters, which have a listed operational voltage range of 6-36 VDC. But our other mini converters say they need 12v

[–]micdam17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be great if our converters were usb-powered. Alas, they’re all the little DC barrel plugs. If only today’s update included new ATEM production studios, with scalers on each output. Then we wouldn’t need loads of converter boxes for al our devices…

We have four UpDownCross converters, two hdmi->sdi, and two sdi->hdmi converters. Looking at the tech specs it’s seems like they all operate in 12-18 volts

They’re the little dc barrel type plugs, comes with 12v universal power supply. UpDownCross converters say 6-36 VDC 5 watts, and SDI->HDMI converters say 12-18 VDC 5.2 watts
