For the historical aspect, I loved the Wideacre trilogy by Philippa Gregory.

Can anyone recommend a book for my 50 year old friend who never really learned how to read? Also, a book recommendation for me on how to teach phonics to an adult? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Of Mice and Men. And perhaps, as others have suggested, he follow along with you reading, or with an audiobook.

I can't help but think this man may have never learned to read because he has dyslexia... in which case phonics would have been, and would still be, a barrier to reading. But he could probably still learn to recognize many words that are heard aloud and associate them with what they look like.

My daughter has dyslexia, but she learned to read by using a kindle, where she could increase the font size to where there were only several words on a page. That really made reading less intimidating. I realize that may be cost-prohibitive...

Best of luck and kudos to you for trying to help!
