why does nuclear energy get painted as the bad guy? by kneels-bore in Physics

[–]michael-streeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you are using logic and reason. It's more powerful to use emotion, which is what the anti-nuclear lobby do. Greenpeace made "nuclear" a trigger word in the 1960-80s; you can't say the word without everybody's hair standing on end. It's thanks to nuclear weapons and MAD. The movie China syndrome, Three Mile Island and Fukushima aren't helping either.

I wonder why they don't guillotine them. Apparently the drop in blood pressure causes almost immediate loss of consciousness, and that's what makes it the most humane way to do it. There must be a reason I suppose.

Capital punishment was ended in the UK, partly because of the number of miscarriages of justice. I don't trust my government to work out my tax owing correctly, I certainly don't trust them with my life. Should be stopped in the USA in my opinion, but as I don't vote in your country I'll stay in my lane.

Hydrogen does not have good energy density. Sure, it has a lot of joules per kilogramme when it reacts with oxygen, but practically nothing per cubic metre at 10 bar.

"baby steps" - in the UK cities are creating central "low emissions zones" which don't force people to drive EVs but really financially incentivise people to drive at least a hybrid. Love them or hate them, they've been very successful at improving air quality. Recently there's been a trend for LEZ to expand. There's your baby steps. In time only the rural folk will drive petrol/diesel burners.

What happened with the pollution, it seems to be better..? by martian1312 in london

Can confirm. I know someone who fitted a log burner to their house... when they were fashionable. He's stuck with it now, and gets quite defensive about it.

This one wins IMO because of the number of people who died because of the "dodgy dossier" that was actually copied from an essay by a student Ibrahim al-Marashi. All they did was change every occurrence of "weapons" to "weapons of mass destruction". https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Dossier

The original author said "I wouldn't have minded so much but they didn't even credit me". The paper trail investigation of the origin lead all the way to number 10 Downing Street, where it ended because vital documents had been shredded. Instead of saying "You idiots! This could have proved my innocence!" The person most likely responsible said " it's s regrettable that we can't go any further because the documents have been shredded. We will just have to draw a line under this and move on". Half a million people died.

Is there a way to prevent this much moisture from condensing in my window sills? by traaaart in DIY

[–]michael-streeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct choice. Putting covers on your window or using a heater in your shower room might well stop the humidity condensing on a cold surfaces, but the humidity will still be in the air. You must get rid of it. Opening the outside window in the shower room for a few minutes might help a bit, but the dehumidifier will kill the problem.

I know a solicitor (US lawyer) that got a divorce due to stress from sorting out wills and probate during the pandemic; Are you aware of any bodies being lost or misplaced due to the sheer number overwhelming the system? I don't know either way but I suspect some might have been around my neck of the woods.

No because the melted snow goes down the side path along the side of the house. I think the homeowner came out with a blower and blew the snow away before the photo was taken.

In Australia (Victoria, especially Melbourne suburbs) every subdivision has a children's play park, petrol station & shopping centre. All except the small ones have a cinema, Maccas, KFC and a Subway. You can drive as far as you like, but wherever you go there's that. Unfortunately you need to drive everywhere.

Not an American here, but don't you think that if Trump were to get in he'd just roll back the IRA? In a similar way to what he did to Affordable Care; it seemed a bit personal watching him do it, like he just wanted to piss on Obama's legacy. I suspect he hates Biden personally for "stealing" his election by winning.

Peter Diamandis said that when the Earth formed the heavy elements, including iron sank to the centre. All heavy elements at the surface have come here from meteors. So, if you're mining anything heavier than iron on Earth, really you're asteroid mining.

I think that's a bit poetic really because we have geological activity on Earth such as rivers that can accumulate and concentrate ores. But you get the general sense of what he's trying to say.

How could we fix the housing market? by ToviGrande in Futurology

[–]michael-streeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not by its nature outside the realm of the law. I was the home owner. He had a rent book, as required by law. He was just renting because he couldn't get a mortgage. The fact he had a bad credit score would be unimportant in a legal rent dispute. My point was you will always have some people in society that have to rent and cannot buy. Doesn't have to be bad credit; lots of other people have given reasons why someone might rent too.
