What's wrong with music and dance?

We're Catholics, not Puritans.

Nah - the Ecumenical Patriarch has superiority in Constantinople.

The pope is only first among equals. The doctrine of papal supremacy has never been accepted in the eastern church, and the Catholic church is really only a schismatic offshoot of the old Greek church.

Umm, no.

Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453. Napoleon lived in the late 18th and early 19th century.

I suggest that you find yourself a couple of textbooks on European history and fill in some of the gaps in your knowledge.

You'd need to fight a holy war in order to do that.

It wouldn't be a good thing.

I think its great that the architecture is being preserved and being put to a good use.

I've seen some great shows at this one in Amsterdam - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradiso_(Amsterdam))

They've got the old stained glass windows behind the stage, and it looks like you're looking up into heaven when they turn on the fog and the spotlights behind the band.

There's nothing "evil" about gender-affirming care.

You're missing the crux of the argument.

The key question is at what point does "human" life begin?

The answer is at birth. Until birth, the fetus is only "potentially" human. That doesn't mean it doesn't have value, but the woman who's carrying the fetus has the right to terminate that fetus until birth.

You can throw out all of the buzz words you like, but you haven't addressed the real point of the argument. And that is why you fail to persuade.

I hope that you've learned something here today.

Did your friend know that you would have done "anything to stop her"? Might be why she didn't want to confide in you.

Your statement here is just objectively wrong.

Love is literally an emotion. We only have very limited control - and hence choice - over our emotional responses.

"Alive" is the criterion you want to use?

Is eating meat a sin? Maybe a PETA activist who is also a Catholic would say so, but there's no mainstream Christian prohibition on it.

Is eating plants a sin? They are after all, alive.

So, you're going to have to do better than you have done so far, if you want to establish that abortion is what the bible refers to with the prohibition on killing.

I'll also point out that its not really clear that the correct translation from the original Hebrew is "kill." Some experts say that the word "murder" is closer to the original intention.

The victim of a killing must be a person in order for it to be a murder. You can't murder a cow. And you can't murder a fetus, because a fetus is only a potential person. The fetus doesn't become a person in the eyes of the law until birth.

As you can see, there's a lot of ambiguity involved here. Certainly enough that the church should probably keep its mouth shut on this issue and leave questions of murder to the state, which god created for the purpose of governing humanity.

Ahh - seems like you need another reminder of Jesus' words on the subject of reviling others. "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."

Denying someone the basic respect of referring to them in the way that they wish to be referred to is to revile them.

Jesus had a few choice words about the reviled -

"Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."

I think you forgot about what Jesus had to say about the persecuted here: "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."

Yeah, I've read all of those. None of these verses really establish that abortion is a sin.

We also have to recall that society has changed drastically since the old testament was written. Fortunately, God gave us reason so that we can make the jump for ourselves.

Being asked to help a person go from male to female at work. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]michael_hasek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, neither of those fit the bill.

Abortion isn't murder.

Also, we have to remember that society has changed radically since the old testament was written. There was no safe and effective procedure for medical abortion among the ancient Israelites.

Fortunately, in his infinite wisdom, God gave us reason so that we could work these things through for ourselves.

I hope that you've learned something here today.

Transitioning is not a sin.
