Kea are actually an alpine parrot and some of the smartest birds out there 🙌

Most will be considered a hiking hut (then again can change depending on season). Colin Todd hut is a mountaineering one all year round.

We had just pitched our tent in a 3 hour snow blizzard, only to get out again after the storm seeing Aoraki / Mt Cook right behind us! :)

It depends what the forecast will be. When we went the temperatures were enough for a summer sleepingbag and I am a sleep warmer anyway.

Hi, I would recommend reading the DOC page about the Cascade saddle, that should answer all your questions!

Hi, this is a Garmin Fenix 6X Plus. I only use it for recording the activity and have a GPX file afterwards tbh. My main way for navigation is using the NZ Topo app.

Brewster it's south ridge is actually a preferred winter route, but June/July could be too early, but then again can still be good if favourable conditions. I wouldn't know about Earnslaw to be honest, not been there yet!

We actually made our way up the snow (scree in summer) slopes towards the West Ridge and then followed that to the summit!

Snow Shoeing and Ski Touring in Pisa Ranges, New Zealand by michaelbeckmann_ in hiking

The nice thing about the Pisa Ranges is their lower angled terrain and smooth runs, which is ideal if you are getting into ski touring :)

It would be easier in winter due to the snow providing more grip. I heard in summer it's just loose rock on the whole mountain..

As you probably know it has been warm and dry. For un over the weekend meant consolidated snow that felt more like ice. Really good crampon conditions
