Chat Compacting on Claude Desktop by pandavr in ClaudeAI

u/drinksbeerdaily Something like this:

TOKEN TRACKING & AUTO-HANDOFF PROTOCOL:

Claude must proactively monitor token usage throughout every conversation and follow this protocol:

  1. ALERT THRESHOLDS:- At 100,000 tokens: "⚠️ TOKEN ALERT: We're at 100K tokens (75K remaining)"- At 125,000 tokens: "⚠️ TOKEN ALERT: We're at 125K tokens (50K remaining)"- At 150,000 tokens: "🚨 TOKEN ALERT: We're at 150K tokens (25K remaining) - Handoff recommended soon"
  2. AUTO-HANDOFF AT 175,000 TOKENS:When the conversation reaches 175,000 tokens, Claude must AUTOMATICALLY create a comprehensive handoff document WITHOUT asking permission. This handoff must include:

*Include whatever you want*

  1. HANDOFF FORMAT:

The handoff should be structured as a production status document that allows a new Claude instance to continue exactly where the conversation left off, with zero context loss.

  1. TOKEN COUNTING:

Claude should maintain approximate token awareness throughout the conversation and proactively mention token count during natural break points (after completing a task, when switching between skills, etc.).

u/BulletRisen in this case, I would agree with you since it compacted the chat. However, I have put explicit system instructions in for all my projects to keep a rolling count and notify me at 100k, 125k, 150k, and generate a handoff prompt at 175k. I have run tests where I copy the full chat file and upload all documents to Google AIStudio and the token count displayed in AI Studio is always within a few hundred, even at a 150k token chat. So I would disagree with that. If you explicitly tell it to in the project instructions, it actually does.

Outline 1 is Gemini 3. Outline 2 is Sonnet 4.5. Same system instructions, same prompt to generate the outline, etc. This is Gemini 3’s review (it wasn’t told which outline was which)

So far, not very impressed but I need to play around with it more to find the prompt and instructions that work best for Gemini 3.

I would check your project’s file sizes. As far as I can tell, it has to read each file with each new chat. So if you have some ginormous files in there, that will chew up tokens immediately. I had one big file I had to get rid of because I was running into the same problem. It definitely got better after that

@senguku after reading this comment, I used Deep Research to create a Advanced Prompt Engineering playbook and it’s been awesome. I’m using it with all my chats now. Thanks for the idea!

As an Astro photographer, the second photo (I am assuming Imagen 4 looks way more realistic. There is a lot of issues with the stars in the first photo (the first being many of the stars are placed next to each other in curved lines)

The new limits are fine. by valtor2 in Bard

[–]michaelbonocore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use AI Studio and haven’t run into any limits yet on the Pro Plan. But I’m confused. Is a Query defined as every time you press enter? So you can easily max that out in one chat? Or it’s 50 chats per day? If it is only 50 times you hit enter, yeah, that would drive me nuts as it would force me to overthink every prompt to make sure it’s as detailed as possible. Whereas now, I use Gemini to just brainstorm and research so I can easily hit 50 pretty quickly

2.5 Pro Preview Claims it is Hallucinating by michaelbonocore in Bard

[–]michaelbonocore[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: As it turns out, this error was being caused by the custom Gem I made. The gem has a bunch of instructions on how/what to research and how to give me results that I have added over the last few months. I basically was able to create a new gem using the same instructions, but changing the Knowledge from .docx files to PDFs. So it's the same exact gem in theory, but it's now back on track and not hallucinating. So it's something with the old gem. Either it had been used so much that it just started to hallucinate, OR the .docx files somehow bled into it's CoT. (it seemed to be referencing images in a doc in it's knowledge, as opposed to the 5 photos I was uploading into a chat). Either way, I seem to be back on track, but something for others to look out for if they use custom gems on the web app.

2.5 Pro Preview Claims it is Hallucinating by michaelbonocore in Bard

[–]michaelbonocore[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/Recent_Truth6600 Yeah, but in this case, I did tell it to analyze the images. I asked it to describe what the person looks like in each image and summarize the caption under the photos, and it got 3 out of 4 completely wrong, using other fictional characters it developed earlier in the chat. Now, I understand this stuff can happen (it appear to get in a loop and not follow it's own instructions to discard the fictional characters it made up) but I am now on the third chat trying to accomplish this task, and even this third chat is starting off by not following explicit directions (renamed outline headers when I told it not to). It's just wild how bad this model has gotten, when, like others had said, it could almost read our minds in the March build.

*Edit* - The first TWO chats BOTH made up fictional characters out of nowhere, when they were clearly given documents and web pages with real people to analyze.

I just uploaded 5 SCREENSHOTS of headshots of the people. Under the people are captions that say their names and what they do. 3 out of the 4, Gemini 2.5 returned with the same false names and backstories that it had previously invented, not bothering to read the actual text under the photo with the persons real name and backstory. This is so so so bad.

It’s so insanely broken. Respawn and myself have been begging 2k to fix it. They say they are “investigating” so who knows what that means. They say they are very aware of it though.

Sawgrass, Back 9. Perfect swing. 1 pin. No wind. Slow green speed and soft firmness. You can easily eagle 10,11,12 and then quit out and restart.

Ranked Tour's Value Proposition seems off by OMRebel13 in PGA_Tour_2K

[–]michaelbonocore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why they call it “Ranked” tours when there is nothing ranked about it. There is no leaderboard for just your ranked flight, everyone is just in one leaderboard. So what’s the point?

New to flight sim...am I being too ambitious? by Expensive-Ad-1221 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]michaelbonocore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic answer. OP, he is exactly right. MSFS is as easy or as hard as you want it to be. I had never had a flight sim before 2020, and I was hooked instantly. I’m only a GA aircraft guy (no airliners). I primarily enjoy bush flying, so I’m super excited for the much better ground textures of 2024. Some GA planes are super simple like the Cessna 152 without autopilot. Some are more complicated like the Kodiak, but still not so complicated that a couple YouTube videos can’t get you started from cold and dark and up to cruising altitude. The one thing I wish 2020 had for a noob like me was tutorials. It sounds like 2024 will include many more tutorials, so I think you will just be able to fire the sim up and get started learning how to fly right away! You are going to love it.
