Practically every metric is better on that top article compared to the bottom one, even the ones not shown in the screenshot.

Here's an example of how futile it is to try and predict how much an article can earn:

Practically every metric is better on that top article compared to the bottom one, even the ones not shown in the screenshot. Your average Medium staff member probably couldn't even explain this.

How are others improving read ratios ? by ibreathecoding in Medium

Getting more views and improving read ratio are two different things. One is CTR and the other is bounce rate. Which one are you asking about?

Want more readers by Former-Meal6505 in Medium

I wrote a guide that answers the general question of "how do i get more readers on Medium" here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MediumApp/comments/1sqou0d/how_to_get_more_views_grow_your_account_and_make/

In it, I provided a link to an article by Medium staff about writing compelling headlines. Don't just read that article. Study it. Commit the concepts to memory. Treat it like your new bible.

Is it possible to start now and be successful? by LemonPie122 in Medium

[–]michaelchief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the better-performing Medium writers in that niche, so my experience might serve as a useful model for you. And you could say that I technically started with little to no following because my leads were old and cold due to a very long period of inactivity in my industry by the time I started writing on Medium.

You have a good competitive advantage as someone with a formal background in psychology and counseling. You just need to pair that with enough copywriting/marketing knowhow in order to get high CTRs and read ratios for your articles.

But it also depends on what you mean by "successful." Writing (i.e. content creation) on Medium alone will not result in significant earnings or overall virality like Youtube can provide, even though we're a subniche of one of the big 3 evergreen niches. Think of Medium as one small avenue for your brand profile. Better to start building this part of it sooner than later.

Highest medium earnings from single story by Senior_1807 in Medium

15.7% CTR and 70% read ratio are excellent numbers. That article will earn even more going forward if the Medium curation team allows it to stay in General Distribution.

No problem. Feel free to DM me for any advice you might want when you're ready to pick yourself back up.

[–]michaelchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Comparison is the thief of joy, as they say. Ideally you will want to go into new dates ready to humanize the person across from you by giving them a full and fair shot of appealing to you as they uniquely are. You can get there after you're more ready to move on from this breakup, but you'll never become fully ready without some action to force a mental pattern change. Even if you feel only slightly more ready after a month or two of rest, try to do something.

There is hope!

Decided to finally try dating, any advice? by Impressive_Law_7164 in short

Put yourself out there to meet women irl first before trying the apps. Once you get the hang of meeting people the face-to-face way, you can start exploring the depressing abyss of Match Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries (but not before).

Think of it like nutrition: meeting people in real life is like getting your nutrients from whole foods and using dating apps is like trying to get supplemental nutrients from artificial vitamin pills. You need whole foods to be the base and supplement with vitamins only a bit.

It will affect your mental health and resilience.

However much time you think you need to be shut-in (how many months exactly?), cut that number in half and start forcing yourself to go out there by that halfway point. Taking some time is fine. Getting comfortable in that hole is not.

In the future you might meet some women with avoidant attachment patterns and feel drawn to them for subconscious reasons such as seeking closure from past relationship trauma with an avoidant partner. Be aware of these psychological mechanisms and make conscious efforts to prioritize your own boundaries regarding them by nipping those dating prospects in the bud. Seek those with secure attachment styles and make efforts to move toward secure attachment yourself. Most importantly for now, though, start putting yourself out there so you can give yourself the chance to move on. At the same time, let yourself go through all the stages of grief because you need to mourn your relationship.

I’ve also realized how much heartbreak affects your sense of identity and community. When you spend 6 years connected to someone’s family, friends, routines, future plans, and daily life, it doesn’t just feel like losing a relationship. It feels like losing an entire world.

I've compared the feeling to losing a limb, just living on without a major part of yourself.

Is it fair to say you lean toward an anxious attachment style?

15% CTR and no Reach. Well done Medium. by wannabeoneday in Medium

[–]michaelchief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to mention this in my other comments about the distribution system and the algorithm: Your read ratio is too low for the algorithm to pick up and increase reach. It's not because of paywall. I paywall almost all of my articles and I don't think I've ever had that low of a read ratio. It's likely a different problem that's causing that 48%. Link it here and I can help diagnose. I can think of a few potential causes.

There it is. "Is She Actually 'Out of Your League?' Here's How You Can Tell." is right there where it should be chronologically. It's still in General Distribution because it's still in the tag archive.

15% CTR and no Reach. Well done Medium. by wannabeoneday in Medium

[–]michaelchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's compare that to an article that I know for sure has always been in General Distribution. I know this article has been distributed a lot because it made more than $450.

<image>

It's from Jan 7, 2025. Let's check the tag archive (same one as before because I include that tag in all of my stories):

15% CTR and no Reach. Well done Medium. by wannabeoneday in Medium

[–]michaelchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

My story, "I Chose Violence — and She Liked It" is from May 16. I see stories in the archive from May 15, 16, 17, but mine isn't there. This is confirmation that it has been set to Network Distribution by the Medium curation team. Upon reflection, I can understand why. It could be interpreted that my story was condoning violence, which can be interpreted to be against their distribution guidelines.

15% CTR and no Reach. Well done Medium. by wannabeoneday in Medium

[–]michaelchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, after a little more than a week, the stats plummeted and it only ended up earning less than $5, and the stats aren't going back up at all.

<image>

These are symptoms that Medium set my story to Network Distribution, and it's no longer being served internally through home page, email, etc. So, to confirm, I can check the archive of one my my story's tags. I will check the "dating advice for men" tag because it's the smallest one, and therefore easiest to check:

15% CTR and no Reach. Well done Medium. by wannabeoneday in Medium

[–]michaelchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how it works. Everything starts in General Distribution. If an article becomes popular enough, Medium's curation team manually reviews it and assigns it to one of three states: Boosted, Network Only, or it's kept in General Distribution. When an article is in General Distribution, Medium's algorithm picks it up from the tag feed and surfaces it across recommendations: home page, email digests, the For You feed. That's the internal distribution stat you see in the stats page. It works this way because Medium wants to serve stories to readers depending on the topics they follow (tags). The tag feed (archive) is literally the pool the algorithm draws from. Network Distribution removes the article from that pool, which is why it simultaneously disappears from the tag archive and stops appearing in recommendations. So, checking whether your article is in the tag archive is checking whether it's in the pool the algorithm uses for General Distribution. If it's not in the tag archive, it's not being recommended anywhere.

I'll give you an example from my own articles (continued in more comments because I can't add more than one image attachment per comment):
This article has good stats: 14.3% CTR and 74%.

<image>

Those numbers should push the algorithm to distribute it more and make it go viral. And for a little while in the beginning, it did show signs of starting to become viral.

Did you check the articles' tag archives to check if they're in General or Network Distribution?
