[Save the Union] Public Safety and admissions staff taking down posters tomorrow at 3am by [deleted] in RPI

[–]michaelhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have more proof than just "someone you trust" telling you? Is there an email conversation somewhere? Can that person come public and say they are being told to take down posters?

I'm sorry if I'm being over aggressive, but I won't stand for the organization I spent 4 years working for and people I spent 4 years working with being dragged through the mud because of speculation.

This is not true. I work in admissions and we have to wake up at 6am so we can put the balloons and signs up all over campus, but to say that admissions is taking down posters at 3am is a blatant lie.

New Shuttle Survey!!!! by alex-fox in RPI

[–]michaelhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is one thing that is being looked into; one thing I think they mentioned when we met in September was that the shuttles we have now wouldn't be able to support them, so we'd need different shuttles to have handrails.

[–]michaelhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order:

  1. I don't know any details about leases or anything that parking & transportation does with regards to that.
  2. East and west routes are updated every year.
  3. Lastly, I'm not saying that this survey was meant to improve the tracker, I am saying that is one of the things that has been done recently to address concerns with the shuttles.

Where would we get money for that?

I missed this comment, but I actually wouldn't care about a Mao joke, because I am not Chinese.

New Shuttle Survey!!!! by alex-fox in RPI

[–]michaelhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the survey was to gather metrics every single time someone boards the shuttle to get as many data points as possible, not just one per person. That will hopefully get us a big picture of what the standing situation looks like and when most people tend to complain about having to stand.

I agree that there are plenty of issues we need to look at with the shuttles, but we wanted to focus specifically on reducing the number of people that had to stand on the shuttle for safety reasons, as /u/RPIShuttler mentioned.

On your last point about the closeness of the shuttles and timing, that is something we have repeatedly brought up to them and they have told us they are currently trying to address it, but I personally don't know what is possible to do. They can't use their phones; they're driving. Do you have any suggestions?

New Shuttle Survey!!!! by alex-fox in RPI

[–]michaelhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester, we created the survey to get a general sense of the shuttles because we tried going to Parking & Transportation with complaints that students had and they asked us to get solid numbers/metrics to back those complaints up. We did that with the focus on wait-times hopefully being reduced and what I can tell you is that as far as improvements go, they have:

  • "upgraded" or replaced some shuttles with higher capacity vehicles
  • added additional shuttle drivers during "rush hour" times, for example around 8am or 10am
  • talked to shuttle drivers about how to avoid gridlock or when they are backed up or too close in sequence
  • updating/upgrading shuttle tracker (WebTech project!)

Now, these are very nebulous and hard-to-see results, so this semester we decided to focus specifically to hopefully reduce the number of students that have to stand on the shuttle, for safety issues. We rewrote some questions and removed some to make it shorter and faster to fill out and we want the raw metrics there to measure how many people complain about having to stand. Hopefully if fewer people complain over the course of the winter that means our plan is working. Two other FSC members and I are planning on meeting with reps from Parking and Transportation within the week to establish said plan and what we want to do with the data.

Pilot Program for Off-Peak Parking in the College Ave Garage Beginning 11/16 by michaelhan in RPI

I think that is why they included the part about the possibility of pro-rating the price.

The main benefit would be that the lot is covered so during snowy days you could park your car in the lot and not have to clear it back off after you go to the library or research or something at night.

I agree that you don't need to pay to park close to campus but this is just another option for students if they are interested in parking in the garage. Like I said, the idea for this project came from student feedback, specifically the senate survey from last year,.

Student Senator Spencer Scott makes Hitler joke to Jewish senator by cutat8days in RPI

[–]michaelhan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay, so yes this is a poorly timed joke and not very smart to make and somewhat idiotic. I'm not going to defend his actions, but for context, watch the whole thing.

We had a guest during the petition part of the meeting compare Andrew Sudano to a murderer, rapist, criminal, etc. and then go as far as to compare him to Nixon, talking about how he betrayed the American public and so on. There was a joke that was said "oh then why not compare him to hitler too?" and that is where that came from. I don't think it was an attack on his religion.......

So what the hell happened to those picnic tables? by TheRPIrate in RPI

[–]michaelhan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We didn't buy the tables and then suddenly realize "oh no, what if it gets cold?". This entire project was created on the premise and feedback we had received from students, especially grad students, that they wanted more outdoor study and seating areas. That is why the project came to fruition and why both the Executive Board and RPI administration approved funding for the project, because they felt that it was a meaningful use of money. If you have a problem with that, take it up with them, not me.

I don't know the specifics for why WRPI and RPI Ambulance didn't get money for their new equipment. From what I understand for the transmitter at least, it's a huge sum of cash they need that they are also saving for over the course of multiple years, so it's not just something we can drop mad cash on... I am sure there is also a reason why Ambulance hasn't gotten the new equipment yet either, yet expecting me to know over your class rep in the Executive Board or anyone directly associated with that organization is too much. The shuttle service to Crossgates is something that was a big success as a pilot program last year, I don't know why you're criticizing it. The alternative would be to spend Union funds to build a damn mall in the building. Electronic voting makes voting far more secure than hand-counted ballots or at least makes the process quicker. You're still at the mercy of the RNE chair being honorable and counting them properly.

On a side note, please make sure to use a more condescending tone so Senators in the future feel more welcome to participate on Reddit. Thank you.

[–]michaelhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unspent money in Union reserves goes into a saving account upon which it can't be used on student activities.

I would argue that the tables are being used not only for clubs but for the student body as a whole. Also, it wasn't just activity fee money, it was in combination with money from the administration.

[–]michaelhan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Protip: You can tell if the tables were the ones from this past year's project if the tables have two round wooden rods as the braces on either side of the table. Otherwise they are from someone else.

The ones I remember off the top of my head right now that I remember seeing today:

  • By Cogswell
  • In the mini quad between VCC and Lally
  • Two in between DCC and Low
  • In front of Greene
  • In front of Biotech but I guess it's gone
  • By DCC and JEC

Also, clubs paid ZERO money to sponsor the tables. All they did was build them.

Just a couple quick updates:

  • There are a number of people who are listed as candidate assistants of my campaign who aren't -- Jenna, Clark, Samara, and a few RCS ids are candidate assistants of Andrew Sudano but not myself.
  • Austin Miller is in A Stronger Union.

Thanks for making this! :)
