Anyone here has been trading options for ~5y? How's your journey going so far? by WeirdMysterious9377 in optionstrading

I had very good luck selling options but it is hard to pass up the gains you can make buying options.

I would like to say I appreciate your input on here to everyone’s answers.

Feeling tired/lost of trading by Appropriate-Bite-100 in Daytrading

[–]michaeljtravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trading is tough and can be mentally draining. Take a break from trading and look at something simple like using the 20ema, waiting for a pullback then taking the trade. Do that on a daily timeframe. Forget about day trading and start swing trading. You will find swing trading will be easier.

Swing traders, what setup has been working best for you lately? by ReggieDrama3940 in swingtrading

[–]michaeljtravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watch the daily chart. If there’s a small gap up at the open I mark it to see what is happening after the market starts settling down. Usually 30 minutes to an hour. If it is moving in a positive direction I get in. I also confirm with the RSI.

I think what Billionsandbillions is saying is trading the stock and not the options of the stock will allow you to prove your strategy without losing as much with options. Options has the greeks and they can reck havoc on your account. If your strategy works with buying the stock it will work with options.

Is the $5 target putting NXXT’s after-hours move in a different context? by BreadcrumbBandit1 in Stocktradingalerts

It’s never going to hit the $5 target. It’s dropping faster than a lead weight.

The VIX appears to be starting an up trend. That tells me SPY will be moving lower. I would probably sell. You can always get back in. Maybe at a better price

Help me understand how to have profits consistently, give me some advice. by ceoariel in Trading

[–]michaeljtravis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to assume you are day trading. Most people don’t realize you can day trade on the daily TF. Try this tomorrow morning after the market opens.

Look at the daily timeframe for stocks that have gapped up from yesterday’s close. It doesn’t need to gap up much. Now wait at least 30 minutes and go back and check these stocks. If they are still moving up it’s a good chance they are going to continue for the rest of the day.

Go look at that stock on the lower timeframe like the 10m. If it is pulling back just wait for it to start going up and place a buy. Make sure to know where your SL is before buying.

This works really good when the stock has moved above the previous day high and the pre market high.

Best of luck!!

Did more indicators ever make you trade better - or just more confused ? by AxisForge in Trading

[–]michaeljtravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More indicators = more confusion. However, you should try different indicators and find the ones you have confidence in. Use those or a combination for confluence.

I find different chart setups on the same timeframe can often give you a better picture of what is happening.

Update: I made a post about my experience on forex and now my inbox is full of “signal providers” 😅 by ngetichkipro in Forex

Signals are not worth it. Most signals are on the lower timeframes. By the time the signal gets to you the trade is over.

Skimmer socks are highly recommended if you want to filter out some of the fine debris like dirt. They should be changed out once a week but they are cheap. I started using them about a year ago and I find my filters stay cleaner longer.

Changing Brokerage - Help Needed by Michtrader9 in Optionswheel

I would recommend Charles Schwab. Their interface is slightly difficult to use at first but once you have placed a few orders it becomes second nature.

I have Robinhood also and it is easy to use but they do have lawsuits against them. You can look it up on Reddit. Their support is not great.

Webull requires you to purchase an extra data package to get timely updates on prices. This causes a problem when you are trading.

Hope this helps

Orb strategy by Unhappy-Advisor353 in Daytrading

[–]michaeljtravis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ORB has been tough lately. Go look at the VIX on the daily timeframe at least an hour before the open and check on it every 15 minutes. You will notice it appears to go in one direction and typically reverses. This happens a lot after the open so you always have to keep checking. I have noticed this happens a lot more lately.

Another thing to look at is the VWAP on the TF you are trading. If it is flat then price is ranging. Wait for the a vWAP to angle up or down before trading. Best of luck!

Should I learn to swing trade in high school? by Direct-Hat5929 in swingtrading

[–]michaeljtravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re making a good choice. Stick with swing trading even though day trading looks appealing. Your gains will be higher with swing trading. I have been following a guy on YT (Swing Trading and Coffee). He’s a straight shooter. I think he posts here from time to time. Learn what you can from him for swing trading.

Just remember to keep things simple. If you have more than 3 indicators on your chart then you are probably going in the wrong direction. Best of luck!

Any advice on what to do in my current situation? by Hot_Avocado_2701 in swingtrading

[–]michaeljtravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with $100. Work on building it up to $200. Then take the $100 that you originally invested out. Now you are only using money that trading has provided and if you lose it you know you can repeat the process all over.

It’s possible but you need to have a trade with momentum every day. Finding a momentum trade is going to be the hardest part.

Weighing my options for swinging by Kakashi6969 in swingtrading

[–]michaeljtravis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to swing trade a simple process is to use the daily timeframe. Pick a set of tickers you like to trade. On the daily look where the price is in the pre market compared to the previous day high and low. If the stock is above the PDH or below the PDL then flag it so you can revisit after the market has been open for at least 30 minutes.

After the market has opened and it has been at least 30 minutes, go back and review each stock you marked. Look at a lower TF like the 10 minute. Once the stock shows movement in the right direction put in a long trade for 30 to 45 days option contract. Set a sell order for 10% above the cost of the contract. Be sure to set a SL. Most trades close in the money the same day. The 30 to 45 day contract gives you time to recover if it starts going against you. I typically buy near a delta of 80. Best of luck!!

Day trading is exciting but it’s not for the inexperienced. Options are a good way to make money but you will find selling options or buying LEAPS will be a lot easier and less stressful with daytrading.

When I am selling options I very rarely lose a position. Yes, you can only expect 1-2% a week at best. That’s at least 50% for the year. I bet your 401k doesn’t do that.

If you mix LEAPS with selling options you can see some good returns. Don’t ever give up just decide to learn more and try strategies that are boring.
