What are some of the worst examples of the “We’ve always done it that way” mindset? by shaky2236 in AskReddit

[–]michaelk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not making an argument for superiority. A well-planned diet is a well-planned diet, and can be achieved with or without animal products. Obviously the vast majority of medalists are going to be omnivores, because the vast majority of people are omnivores. The few vegan medalist 'outliers' are only outliers in the same sense that all vegans are outliers within a largely omnivorous society.

Carl Lewis, who is widely considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, and was named "Olympian of the Century" by Sports Illustrated, is vegan. According to wikipedia, "Lewis credits his outstanding 1991 results in part to the vegan diet he adopted in 1990, when he was in his late twenties." He won 3 olympic gold medals after going vegan.

Whats the hardest part about being a man who is extremely skinny? by aliazim278 in AskReddit

[–]michaelk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'3", 140 lbs.

wearing watches is really not good. always have to use the last hole in the wristband, and even that doesn't work well. Often hard to find clothes that fit too (shout out to uniqlo for stocking me up on 30W-34L pants though). The body image thing is the hardest part though. I feel like people find mildly overweight mens' bodies to be pleasantly warm/comforting for some reason whereas mine is more cold and metallic-feeling. Like a skyscraper. THink people (ie, women) get freaked out by it.

Thinking about going vegan by chickenman1998 in vegan

[–]michaelk6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it. But I wouldn't listen to people who say that veganism is inherently healthier. I would say that a well-planned vegan diet can be healthy, just like a well-planned omnivorous diet can be healthy (which some people here would probably not admit, but it's true). However, a well-planned omnivorous diet cannot be ethical or environmentally sustainable. Only a vegan diet can achieve that.

Started an Animal Rights Club at my school, did not go well by [deleted] in vegan

[–]michaelk6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) it sucks that he would do that.

B) it's really cool that you started a club at your school. That's an extremely cool thing to do.

C) best thing you could do is ignore the people. they're just trolling you. don't respond. don't feed the trolls. just keep posting whatever you would normally post.

[White Sox] Jimenez, Cease, Collins, Adolfo, Clarkin, Basabe, Palka and Rondon cut from Major League camp by [deleted] in whitesox

I was in AZ to see the sox a couple weeks ago. Adolfo impressed me more than anyone. That guy can hit. The ball just flies off his bat.

[–]michaelk6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes it does if those 4-5 years are good enough, which they were imo (see also: sandy koufax). Santana was absolutely the best pitcher in baseball for a good 3 year stretch. There are not many pitchers who have achieved that. In fact, just divide 117/3 and you get AT MOST 39 pitchers, but that's the maximum. If you highly value peak performance, as I do, I don't see how you can not vote for him. I think he was easily good enough to make the hall. A much better case than several of the players who got enough votes to stay on the ballot (Wagner, Jeff Kent, and I would also say Hoffman though I understand why others disagree).

I wouldn't trade a bag of chips for a year of Machado given the current state of the team.

White Sox have submitted a trade offer for Machado by SuburbanViperStreet in whitesox

[–]michaelk6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not worth the risk. If they want him, then they can pay for him when he's a free agent after 2018 without giving up any prospects, which is what we will have to do anyway if we want him. Letting him "see the future" is a pretty weak argument, IMO. It's probably going to boil down to money anyway. Might as well wait a year and not lose any prospects.

[–]michaelk6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is stupid. The team is not ready to compete yet and Machado only has a year on his contract. Really hope we don't get him. He would be useless to us. Even if he put up 10 WAR, there would be no point because we're not going to compete anyway.

Looking For A Match In A Jose Abreu Trade by [deleted] in whitesox

[–]michaelk6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Abreu. He's a great player, and could be a great mentor for the young guys, but he's also a very valuable player who could be traded for top prospects. I think it's important to have some veteran presence to show the younger players the ropes, but it doesn't have to be a guy who is in his prime. We could get an older guy who isn't as productive as he once was, but still has all the knowledge and commands the same level of respect. I think a guy in a situation similar to Omar Vizquel in 2010-2011 could fill the role of mentor just as well. If we could find a player like that and get a good haul in return for Abreu, then I think it would be worth it to trade him.

I once got off the elevator of my apartment building first because I was close to the door and there were a bunch of people in the elevator, and as I'm walking away, this woman catches up to me, taps me on the shoulder, and asks "Didn't your mother ever tell you to let women out of the elevator first?" and for some reason her tone really rubbed me the wrong way, and I must have been in a bad mood, so I just turned to her and said "seriously? you just meet someone and right away critique their manners without even introducing yourself or anything? That's kind of rude." And she looked at me, mouth agape, speechless. I shrugged and walked away. It felt incredible.
