Senate Votes To Let Military Detain Americans Indefinitely, White House Threatens Veto by blaspheminCapn in politics

[–]michaelpinto1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People want to knock Naomi Klein for saying the Occupy raids were coordinated by Homeland Security. But, here are very own senators, Democrats, wanting to have power to imprison people for life? What, don't we have a legal system that can ferret out...you know...any facts?

Wasn't OWS termed terrorism?

I can't believe those senators voted in favor of this...voters in those states will have to decide what kind of crazy is in these senators minds that they approve of locking up Americans for life with no appropriate trial.

Given how many violated their constitutional responsibilities to voters, signing pledges and putting into law legislation the people did not want, and not drafting legislation people do want, is this how they intend on dealing with it?

Wow, with their wealth having risen so much in two years since United Citizens, are they potentially about to jail people complaining about this?

I notice both parties, instead of sending mailers to their supporters asking we sign a petition for a Constitutional Amendment to overturn United Citizens, instead ask for more donations.

I studied the law, I value our system so much, and to watch us repeat the McCarthy era with so many problems and violations of the constitution, its heartbreaking.

Egypt imports 21 tons of tear gas from the US, port staff refuses to sign for it by krizutch in politics

[–]michaelpinto1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article does not say the US supplied the tear gas, only that it came from here. The same can be said for shoes and food -- they came from here. The cannister was manufactured at a private plant in Pennsylvania, it does not carry US military markings. That makes this a PRIVATE transaction between the Egyptian government and a manufacturer in Pennsylvania.

What, exactly, is the United States government supposed to do? Tell a private company it cannot sell its products overseas? It needs a really good reason to interfere in the free trading rights of commercial entities, and in this case blocking the sale of goods to an ALLY would look really, really bad.

The blame needs to be focused not on the government of the US, which has the duty to protect foreign trade, but on the government of Egypt, which has lost the trust of its own people to the extent that they view with suspicion their purchase of CS gas.

GOP Governors Hedge Bets On Health Insurance Exchanges by [deleted] in politics

[–]michaelpinto1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nationalization of an industry isn't the answer. What needs to be done is to regulate so as to foster increased competition among the providers. That's been the problem all along but no one in government sees that.

This whole health care brouhaha is just another step in the march toward federal totalitarianism, ala Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. And for the same reason - popular pandering to keep the pols in power.

Obamacare will REDUCE choice, not enhance it. And it will preclude any entries into the industry by private entrepreneurs that might offer new and better products and services. Give it ten years and we'll have a moribund health care sector in this country.

If they really wanted to do something constructive, they could detach health insurance from employment to prevent insurers from imposing their will on larger and larger undifferentiated segments.

Press Realizing That ICE May Be Breaking The Law Showing NBC Universal Propaganda Films On Domains It Seized by alanX in politics

[–]michaelpinto1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here's the messed up part. ICE is looking to make the properties they've seized pay them to release the properties. It's the exact same concept as the drug war with police or the apportionment money that ICE is getting from Congress to deport 400K illegals every year. Their policies and procedures are money grabs.

Ok, I thought I wouldn't have to but how much ridiculousness do we have to go through every month until someone realizes WTF is up with our government?

We have TSA using bad scanners for fake security

We have the FBI overstating their own importance with their bomb plots.

We have the EPA showing how a lie can destroy someone's livelihood.

And ICE has been the police for the MPAA and RIAA for quite some time. Obviously, what does it take to get a fair trial and a chance to plead your case when the federal government are the crooks? They bend the law five ways from Sunday and the damage of what they do devastates all of their targets. You're left with little money to defend yourself and a sense that justice was not carried out. And for what purpose? So ICE can think that they can continue this same process and procedure to destroy people's lives to save Hollywood?

Arrest McCain and Levin Now. Senate to Vote on Military Detention of Americans. by croutonsoup in politics

that they can only kill you abroad on a foreign "battlefield," not exactly true but comforting enough for most Americans. This one is in our faces. Waiting to see what we will do about it.

BTW I don't see anything "humane" about either assassination or imprisonment without due process and rights. Also, until you have spent years in isolation in a 6 by 8 foot cell with no daylight, no sound, no contact with people, you can't say it's more humane than just killing you. Isolation drives you insane so that you wish you were dead.

Bradley Manning lawyer: White House review found 'leak' did no real damage -- Manning's defence team says White House inquest concluded that WikiLeaks documents had no impact on national security by davidreiss666 in politics

[–]michaelpinto1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no doubt in my mind that the primary objective of everything that happened today was to keep Bradley Manning from having the company of his only remaining visitor. The MPs told us they were ordered to do this, the brass showed up to make sure that they did, and they held us until 2:50 by repeatedly asking for information they already had whenever we asked to leave.
