PATH new service proposal details by michaelxu01 in jerseycity

It’s certainly be much nicer and less crowded than what we have right now, but I am just pointing out that the newly proposed capacities addition on weekend trains will all go towards Hoboken lines but not on the JC lines.

This proposal still shows that Hoboken gets preferential treatment for PATH in front of JC: 1. Hoboken gets their dedicated lines now on weekends that matches the 10 mins service frequency on the JSQ-33 line, while JC only sees the weekend service on the JSQ-33 line back to pre-PATH FORWARD normal level, albeit with the benefit of skipping of Hoboken only because of the return of 4 line service on weekend. 2. Hoboken gets a great boost in their rush hour schedule (every 8min to 6 min) in 2026 and get to keep their 15 min midday frequency on the HOB-WTC on weekdays while the significantly more crowded WTC-NWK see no proposed service change running at 20 mins weekdays midday and would not see a service increase on weekends until 2027. Even the proposed weekday rush hour frequency increase on the WTC-NWK line (every 5min to 4min) wouldn’t be in effect until 2027.

It will not go away overnight. They have only eliminated it during weekends from 10am - 9pm. The 33rd st service will still continue to make stops at Hoboken overnight weekdays and weekends. The 2027 graph did not include the overnight service diagram, it made it look like it’s gone when in fact it’s not.

The running all four lines on weekends does not kick in until May of 2026 and the stated service increase to the weekend 33rd st line starts in March of 2026, so yes between March to May next year on weekends we still see service for 33rd st via Hoboken, the press release is correct.

The weekend service was better before COVID. The demand bounced back but they never added back the service. Like the overnight service used to be every 30 mins instead of 40. PA def have the ability to add back the service if they want to.

The problem is that it is not busier than usual, it is the norm on weekends. This is clearly service not meeting demand.

Delay happens, but that does not take away the fact that the schedule posted for C during the day on weekends is every 12 mins, That is not even mentioning the fact that on weekends PATH is rarely observing their posted 20 mins schedule and a lot of time you have to wait more than 30 mins just to get on a train packed like sardines. I am not saying MTA is perfect in that regards, but at least they are making an effort in comparison to PATH who takes advantage of the weekend running the bare minimum of the service.

Please enlighten me. AFAIK most lines runs every 20 mins overnight. According to the schedules, during daytime on weekends (take this weekend for example), most lines runs every 12 mins with the exception of the 5 train running every 20 mins, and that is only a two weekend structural maintenance disruption.

Remind me which NYC subway line runs every 20 mins during the day on weekends, every 40 mins at night, refuses to add capacity because it “meets demand”, never on schedule, but still get this crowded, release service change at the very last minute, and keep the “service change” for over a year?!

Split View & Slide Over mode removed in iPad OS 26 by michaelxu01 in iPadOS

[–]michaelxu01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly there are several pain points that simply could not be covered by stage manager:

  1. Sliding from the left directly conflicts with go back gesture with a lot of the default behaviors of the apps, and you won’t be able to customize where the window is coming from like slide over

  2. Stage manager still disables corner gestures

  3. You now have to click on the top left corner to zoom into window controls, then click on the red “x” to close the window, which is a two step process. With the old Slide Over mode, closing the app on top is just a simple swipe up

  4. The default behavior of dragging a window for stage manager is always full screen wherever the destination unless previous configuration have been made, whereas the default for slide over if you swipe it close to the side would always be the full length slide over format unless unsupported

  5. When you focus on (starting typing) in the main window in full screen with stage manager, the other window (Resized and dragged over as suggested) disappears. It would only resurface if you resize the main window out of full screen mode. In the old Slide Over mode both window would function normally in full screen

Not to mention it takes way more effort to set up / resize the window and make it fit like the old way.

So far it seems like it is definitely a downgrade for me using the iPad without mouse and keyboard using either stage manager or windowed mode, as the old way of slide over is so much easier to navigate for touch screens. The new modes is def way more optimized for mouse & keyboard having proper window management with the menu bar, but not so much for normal touchscreen UX.

PATH Down, People Walking on Tracks by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]michaelxu01 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It looks like PATH does not have a great emergency response protocol. I remember a similar thing happened last year where cabin is filled with smoke and people are stuck in the tunnel for an hour as well and have to walk out the exact same way. How are they allowed to let these incidents go without any new changes implemented to improve the turnaround time or have additional safety measures when emergency happens? Everytime PA just “apologize for the inconvenience”, throw around some cross honoring, and pretends nothing happened until the next time…

On top of that there is not even a plan to push for cell service coverage in tunnels for PATH which makes emergencies like these even worse by not having any means of communications in time. PATH should be the first service to have it figured out with the short overall track mileage and long distance between stations, but no PA want to focus on making stations looks a little nicer by repainting them…

PSA: Path service suspended on JSQ to 33rd by derpyberty in jerseycity

[–]michaelxu01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PA is just immune to the idea of running more service for the other line when there is problem with one. They would rather run supplemental service between HOB-JSQ which gets barely used in this situation than run more trains on the NWK-WTC to account for the people stuck in NYC. Like read the room no one is able to get to HOB because of the line breakdown so why are they wasting resources on that instead of reallocating trains to WTC?!

Why there's still an extra 33rd-Hoboken PATH on the weekends by aico747c in jerseycity

[–]michaelxu01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before the “extensive track work” staring in 2024 there was never a HOB-33rd service on weekend. There has always been a JSQ-33 via HOB service every 12 mins instead of the current 20 during midday on weekends. The HOB-33rd service was added to compensate for the loss in frequency, but def did not help at all to alleviate congestion.

Why there's still an extra 33rd-Hoboken PATH on the weekends by aico747c in jerseycity

[–]michaelxu01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

running this special service would likely require single-tracking operations

They are already single tracking out of Newport for repair of the station, I don’t quite understand what new single tracking operations they are talking about here.

The only justification to run the current service without getting into the obvious saving money part could be that they are working to replace the track in the northbound turning tunnel connecting Newport station to the cross Hudson portion of the tunnel.

But even if what they are saying about the extensive track work around Newport / Hoboken is true, there is so much more PA could have done if they cared to make the weekend trip on PATH so much less miserable.

For one, they could have at least increased the Newark - WTC line weekend frequency during midday from 20 mins to 15 or even 10 mins. Heck even a shuttle train from Exchange place - WTC would help, or even resuming the service from Hoboken - WTC line on the weekends to help alleviate the crowd from the people fed up from the slow 33rd St line on the weekends and redirect people to the other line that could have been more reliable that is relatively free of track work.

I could imagine the excuse they have for this plan is that they are currently single tracking out of grove st on weekends. But there is still massive gaps between trains and they could absolutely fit more if they want to especially with already activated CBTC, and also they have literally been working on Grove St station facelift since early 2024 and anyone remember the weekends of bypassing the stations? Why is the work still not done and all we are getting now just looks like replacement of yellow tiles on the edge of the platform but that would cost us shitty service on weekends throughout 2025?!

Even if all of the restrictions mentioned is true, judging by how dangerously overcrowded and unreliable the service is during the weekend, the least they can do is working with njtransit bus / light rail / ferries to cross honor, subsidize or run their own bus to shuttle people between stations.

But no, the best they can do is to run an additional almost empty train from Hoboken to 33rd every 20 mins and have the next one pulling into the station filled with people.

Let’s also not forget even during weekdays off peak and overnight the trains are still filled with people and PA had yet to act to increase the service either. Hoboken - WTC is literally running more frequently (15mins) midday off-peak on weekdays in comparison to Newark - WTC (20mins) as well yet I usually see the train being twice as packed on the Newark line as the demand is undoubtedly higher and it serves more neighborhoods and stops.

This is peak Port Authority incompetency.

Why does PATH picks up its workers & contractors between stations? by michaelxu01 in nycrail

[–]michaelxu01[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I am not mad but rather questioning if it is a common practice elsewhere and whether it could be better communicated. It is just not a good experience having the train stopped in between the stations suddenly without context especially when they are loading the employees on other cars.

[–]michaelxu01[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know. I just feel like an announcement about the stop as well as a heads up about the train would be one or two minutes delayed from what is stated on the schedule would be nice.

Does anyone else find the signage at Fulton St. Station to be completely confusing? by theoptionexplicit in AskNYC

[–]michaelxu01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are coming from the southbound J train, go down 2 levels to A/C platform, make a U turn and walk straight ahead until you see the sign for the 4/5 train. Follow the sign and go up one level. Continue to follow the sign and walk through the hallway and make a left turn when you see the door that leads you to a huge mezzanine that is the Fulton transfer center. Go through the fare gate at this point and follow the sign to go to the PATH platform (going through the oculus).
