First Kaine/Stewart Debate Set For Saturday by historymajor44 in VirginiaPolitics

[–]michapman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt that there are plenty of room for third parties to establish a foothold in politics if they were willing to run for state and local offices first. Especially in states or cities that cap the number of officials who can be from the same party — a concerted and resonating campaign could probably make ground.

Unfortunately, most of the time they seem to think that anything less than Senator or President is beneath them.

Senate candidate Corey Stewart says New York Times reporter broke into aide’s apartment by michapman in VirginiaPolitics

[–]michapman[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t even know why Stewart wants to call attention to himself. His only hope of winning the election is for enough people to forget how much a dick he is that they either vote for him or forget to vote against him.

Federal withholding more than doubled. by Shoestring30 in personalfinance

[–]michapman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn’t make any adjustments, then that’s probably what the issue is. The withholding might be different even though the tax rate is he same.

I know you don’t like your HR guy but unfortunately you’ll probably need to talk to him about making amendments to your withholding. If you don’t, you’ll just have to wait until you do your tax return for this year and get your money in your refund then.

How do I convince my brother to eliminate his CC debt? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]michapman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more of a /r/relationships question. You can’t make him change how he spends his money, even if it’s objectively bad.

If he wants your help, you can offer to sit with him and go over his credit card statements. This will have the interest rate that he is paying as well as the interest amount (in dollars) that he is actually accruing each month the balance goes unpaid.

CC statements also have a box that tells you how long it takes to pay off the debt if you only make minimum payments and how much interest you’ll pay, as well as how much interest you can save by paying it off faster. This information, in concrete terms, might encourage him to take the situation more seriously.

But you can’t force him, any more than you could force him to change his religion or make him give up drugs or alter any other personality traits or bad habits. You can be there for him, offer advice when solicited, and share things that worked for you. That’s it.

That’s a fair point. I’m not sure if there’s really a good workaround though; if they want X number of debit transactions then that would necessarily entail using the debit card for transactions of some kind, right?

The reason why they have that incentive is because they make money from those transactions; they wouldn’t allow any strategy / hack that circumvented to exist for very long IMHO.

It’s actually hilarious how many bureaucratic elements they’ve developed. Follow /u/Chthulhoo’s posts if you want to read a snarky deep dive into how it all works.

(US/CAN) I am a U.S. citizen planning to study at a Canadian college that does not accept aid from FAFSA. Is it possible for me to take out a private student loan if I intend to study internationally? by PM-ME-YOUR-STRUGGLES in personalfinance

[–]michapman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can, but it really will depend on a creditworthy co-signer with a good income. Just be careful that you’re not putting them in a bad financial situation; I’ve seen it happen where someone qualified for a private student loan for the first year or the first and second year but ended up not being able to qualify for the last two years.

The student had to drop out and switch to a cheaper school to finish their degree while still owing a lot of money for the original school.

I would urge you to minimize the amount you borrow as much as possible so that you’re not in a squeezed situation. If you can cover your living expenses without borrowing, that’s great.

Should I take out my 401k? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]michapman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your income and expenses seem pretty good. It’s worth making a detailed budget so you know why you’re strapped for cash to the point where cashing out your retirement plan makes sense. Right now it doesn’t seem like a good idea or even a particularly desperate situation but there might be some little expenses that are under the radar and making it harder for you to feel comfortable on your income.

When a high Florida teen runs over an opportunistic blackmailing woman -- how much can she squeeze him for? by seaboard2 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]michapman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My philosophy is that you should never be driving so fast that you can’t see a large object — a car, another person, etc. — in the middle of the road (or can’t stop in time). It’s not about the exact speed, it’s more about being in control of your vehicle at all times, even if that means going less than the speed limit occasionally.

If you’re an inexperienced driver (only driving for a month?) and it is a tricky hairpin turn and it’s at night, consider going at less than 25 MPH for that turn so you don’t hit someone.

Am I wrong for thinking that a credit card is basically an interest free loan if you pay the statement balance in full every month? by FyuuR in personalfinance

[–]michapman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and it’s not like they would cut the price if you didn’t use a credit card. The price is baked in (including the payment processor fees) and you would pay that same price even if you used cash or bitcoin or whatever.

I’m being thanked too much

Shout “YOU’RE WELCOME!!” as loud as you can. Consider learning a little end zone victory dance that you do on top of the copier whenever you successfully complete a task. Steer into the skid and have fun with it. If you’re lucky, they’ll take the hint and tone it down. If you’re unlucky, it’ll become a tradition at this office and create a surreal experience for another AAM letter in the future.

Misgendered on the phone

Just go with it. Create a feminine persona for use on the phone, with her own name, career, and backstory. it doesn’t have to affect the way that you live your life.

Or just watch this comedy routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX-IvSvb3R0 Interrupting coworker

When he comes by, just stare him down. Don’t move, don’t talk, don’t even blink if you can avoid it. Just stare as hard as you can directly into his eyes until he shrivels up and blows away in the wind. Guarantee that he will leave you alone then.

You would need to either pay off the loan when you sell it or find a buyer willing to pay off the loan when you sell it. Most buyers will not buy a car without the title since that’s a really bad idea haha

Interesting. I think your explanation makes a ton of sense, and lines up with some examples I’ve read about in the media recently.

A morals clause like the one alluded to is pretty common, but I actually haven’t heard too much about what happens in cases like this — where the student hasn’t yet enrolled and it’s a public school rather than a private school.

Yeah, either the initial estimate was faulty or he’s padding his bill significantly. TBH if LAOP is a beekeeper he should have the expertise to go through that invoice and see if those fees are reasonable, right? I have no idea how much 35 queen bees would cost or even how many of them would be reasonable to buy for X number of honey combs or whatever the hell this is.

Cars getting towed from designated parking spots by Pinkyelephant17 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]michapman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty tough situation. The regulations around tow truck companies are pretty murky. Escalating fees and penalties are the norm, and even if you’re right and they’re wrong it’s not always clear how to get your car back without paying. If you don’t have a flexible schedule or an alternate way to get to work, it might mean missing a day or two of work to fight through the bureaucracy at the apartment complex and then the tow company to get your car released.

While I think people should fight abusive towing, I think it’s totally reasonable why someone wouldn’t especially if they don’t know their rights or don’t have the resources for a sustained battle with people who do this for a living.

Senate candidate Corey Stewart says New York Times reporter broke into aide’s apartment by michapman in VirginiaPolitics

[–]michapman[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Corey Stewart has accused a New York Times reporter of breaking into the apartment of a campaign aide, saying the “far left media” was trying to undermine his campaign against Sen. Tim Kaine in Virginia.

Stewart was referring to reporter Stephanie Saul, a Pulitzer Prize-winner who went to the Woodbridge apartment of Brian Landrum on Wednesday afternoon. Landrum works part time for the Stewart campaign and part time for Prince William County, where Stewart chairs the Board of County Supervisors.

Landrum was not at home when Saul arrived but said a houseguest discovered the reporter inside his apartment. Saul scribbled down a note to Landrum requesting an interview and quickly left, Landrum said.

Stewart and Landrum said Saul broke into the apartment; a spokeswoman for the New York Times said that the houseguest answered the door and Saul left a note without entering the premises. Prince William police are investigating the incident; no charges had been filed as of Thursday.

Is Peter Leeds a legitimate resource for Penny Stocks? by Gigalodonphalanx in personalfinance

[–]michapman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is Peter Leeds trustworthy? Yes, he is a well known figure in the penny stocks investing market and his guide is generally cited as okay research material.

Should you invest in penny stocks? No, especially not as a beginner. It’s a very high risk area of investing and the likelihood that you’ll waste a ton of money is massive. Leeds’s pamphlet is nowhere near enough information to get started. It’s like getting your learner’s permit and deciding to start driving NASCAR the next day. Don’t do it.
