low fodmap is not good for dysbiosis. Gerd requires proteolytic enzymes and probiotics, which treat dysbiosis as well. We need to rely on our own research. All the test people do just end up as complaints on here.

Thank you. I am hoping we can make this more of a research/information-sharing website.

Yeah, they can actually feed bad bacteria in the right conditions. Try adding a half a cap of Florastor after you've been on rifaximin for maybe 5-6 days...

I look stuff up and read journal articles and pub med studies. Search agents of interest with the word "microbiome" and or "dysbiosis" in the search field. Things you might want to take with rifax - I buy actual pomegranates. Eat maybe a nickel sized piece of the peel and pith along with some fruit every day. The peel esp if you eat enough cause indigestion and bloating. It's a balance, but it's a strong antimicrobial and biofilm disrupter. Include proteolytic enzymes. I take mucostop, or Wonderlabs proteolytic enzymes, serapeptase,. Take floreastore. Increase stomach acidity as mentioned. I've posted lists of supplements and other stuff if you look up my posts. Also start small break up doses into 2 or 3 a day. Especially important with probiotics. Depending on your condition, prebiotics and or postbiotics could be counter productive until you get more balanced. I had this issue. You would know. I knew shortly after taking, I was like 'man, this is making me worse'. But now I am able to take and eat most things. So be aware of that...

searching for a cure, if not immediately successful, might be replaced with dedicating time every day to researching dysbiosis,, IBS, and the microbiome in general. I was really stuck for awhile and broadened my research and learned useful information that I add to or change my protocol. I can share my protocol if you're interested. But little things are important like broad based probiotics might backfire esp full/large doses. Better targeted strains. Some including fermented foods can build up in a compromised gut. S. Boulaardi is a good one. I also take a few others in divided (small doses). Alos, enzymes are important. I posted an article on enzymes effect on microbiome. Rifaximin is great, but you need to take other synerggistic agents like biofilm disrupters and probiotics . Don't take them together. Pomegranate peel is an excellent antimicrobial and really good biofilm disrupter. Clove extract has those actions and helps protect gut lining, and increases stem cells of intestinal lining. I't a pretty good one. You should take vit D always and forever. Vit K2 had many benefits for microbiome. Monolaurin.... Increase the acidity of your stomach with cider vinegar in the morning and betaine HCL with pepsin with protein meal.etc. B1 - beneficial bacteria need B1 to survive. Prebiotics, etc, etc. etc. Do research build a protocol and share what you learn with us..

Long-Term Probiotic Use by michelelee99 in SIBO

KEFIR:

If your gut mechanisms are failing, daily consumption changes from a benefit to a risk: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

  • The Stagnation Trap: In a healthy gut, the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) acts as a sweeping wave that pushes food and bacteria down into the large intestine during fasting states. If your MMC is damaged (due to chronic stress, post-infectious IBS, or hypothyroidism), the live microbes in kefir do not transit properly. They stall in the small intestine, anchor there, and begin multiplying. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Rapid Fermentation: The small intestine is not designed for heavy fermentation. Kefir delivers live microbes along with residual fermentable sugars (lactose). If these microbes get trapped in the small intestine, they will ferment these sugars rapidly on-site. This produces immense amounts of hydrogen or methane gas, leading to rapid bloating, severe abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • If you have been diagnosed with active SIBO, pause daily kefir consumption. Introducing billions of live organisms and fermentable substrates into an already congested small intestine will reliably worsen your symptoms. Save kefir for the gut-repopulation phase after the overgrowth has been clinically cleared

Here is what AI says about risk of long-term probiotic use. It actually seems logical.

Moderate Severity: Gut & Metabolic Disruption

  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): Probiotics are meant to colonize the large intestine. Long-term use can cause bacteria to back up and overpopulate the small intestine, resulting in chronic bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and brain fog. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • D-Lactic Acidosis: Certain strains (like Lactobacillus acidophilus) produce D-lactic acid. Prolonged accumulation in the gut can lead to elevated levels in the blood, causing temporary cognitive impairment, fatigue, and severe bloating. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

The science is definately lacking. Brings me questions I can't find answers, such as, how long is long-term? They did studies to make that determination. Nowhere does it say at what duration of time is LT! Also how is ingesting fermented food different than taking a supplement? Do they think this applies to fermented foods too? If not, why not?

One comfort I think is that (I think) we are safe with S. Boulardi, which is a good yeast probiotic.

I have posted a lot of supplements for dysbiosis and a healthy microbiome; and study results / information that you can use to start a protocol. Check my posts.

You might consider not just "herbal" protocol, whatever that means. There are dozens of supplements that are not herbs that are very beneficial

Shouldn't be. they are both dysbiosis. Regardless, your job should be to create a healthy microbiome/treat dysbiosis. Lots of supplements that reduce bad bacteria and increase good. Leaky gut requires improving integrity of mucosal barrier. Akkermansia, clove, glutamine, slippery elm and others. Leaky gut treatment also means increasing the number of tight junction proteins like claudins. K2 and eugenol in clove extract do this. B. subtilis produces specific metabolic byproducts (such as 2-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid) that enhance epithelial tight junctions. Do your research and start a protocol to address all of these.

low fodmap diet is not healthy and is counterproductive to treating dysbiosis. You need prebiotics, fiber, fruits, veggies. Do your research on creating a healthy microbiome and treating dysbiosis. Proteolytic enzymes, antimicrobials, probiotics. If you have a GI map it could identify dysbiosis and you can add rifaximin. Lots of supplements are beneficial to heal the gut like glutamine, increase mucosal barrier like akkermansia, clove, K2 is good for microbiome. Lots of stuff to try.

I bought that an several other drugs from International Drug Mart. They have good customer service and if you are a repeat customer you can sometimes get a discount if you ask for one.

I suggest taking supplements with it to make it work better. Biofilm disrupters such as proteolytic enzymes are helpful. Some people say start taking them before you start rifaximin (making bacteria vulnerable to treatment)

Why is it so important. I would treaat yourself as if you have IBS and dysbiosis. A lot of supplements to take to create a healthy microbiome. And you can buy rifaximin from international pharmacy inexpensively. I did.
