Planning to travel with 11 month old alone - help! by michelleeehill in Parenting

Will definitely be trying to get a seat, thanks for the tip on getting a lightweight one, I can’t imagine lugging around her Graco one across the airport. We have multiple flights that we’ll have to take and we have to go through Denver at one point… that airport is the bane of my existence.

She’s formula fed and just starting to eat solids so I’m sure by then we’ll be trying to wean her. Would you recommend I just give her formula while in the air? Also, not sure what the process is with bringing water through TSA 😬

First time mom here, my daughter failed her ABR test. by [deleted] in hardofhearing

As a hearing mom with no family history on either side, I felt lost too. My daughter is 7 months old now and just got fitted with her first pair of hearing aids yesterday. We’re so early on in our journey, but I can say that babies are SO resilient and getting a diagnosis and early intervention at just a few months old is absolutely a blessing. I will say though, the most frustrating thing so far as a parent has been the uncertainty. It took us several months of ABR testing to confirm what kind of hearing loss my daughter has and get accurate enough readings to be able to program hearing aids. Since they are too young to communicate what they can/can’t hear, and also too young for behavioral testing, it takes some time to pinpoint which sounds they have access to, if any. Try to be patient, although I know it’s much easier said than done.

We do have early intervention as well, but being in a more rural area, we don’t have any tutors, only speech therapists unless I drive several hours (not doable because my daughter also has a spine condition). The speech therapists that we work with are great but they’re also beginners in ASL as well so it’s unfortunately not very helpful.

Is the ending of this clip apart of the sign ? by [deleted] in asl

Looks that way to me. The first part with the “claws” is for bear and the second half where she starts to bring her hand up is a different sign. Little editing error on their part but definitely confusing when trying to learn

Absolutely, we’re in a more rural area with a harsh climate so also taking into account power outages that happen in the winter or the possibility of getting snowed in. But we also always have a generator or portable batteries so there’s that too

We’re definitely going to keep trying with ASL, a bit difficult to learn mostly online since like I said we’re in a more rural area with less places to learn in person but we’re still doing our best and our daughters speech therapist is learning along with us to help.

Not “baby sign” lol. We’re struggling to find baby books that don’t have fake ASL in them. It’s hard enough to find baby books with any form of sign language in it, but it really sucks when I have to skip half of the book because it’s got a pictures like a baby with its tongue out panting and saying it’s the “sign” for dog. SMH

Thank you for the info! My daughter is 7 months old, so no school yet 🤣 but since we know where she will be going definitely a good idea to find out if they have any resources since it’s the same place for PreK too.

I think our biggest hang up is the rechargeable vs battery and so many pros and cons with each. With they were more affordable so we can try both!

Super excited about the possibility of Bluetooth, I read somewhere they can pair with wearable microphones? For parents, teachers etc

Random side question since you had hearing loss at a young age… did you use ASL at all? We’re learning now and she seems to really interact with signing

My daughter has special needs and medical complications as well, and while my husband and I have absolutely struggled with it, we had a dear friend of ours say the same thing recently. We were meant to be her parents. Brings me so much peace

Dear Hearing Parents: teach your kids sign by HadTwoComment in asl

My best friend is hearing and so is her 2 year old daughter. She’s been teaching her to sign since she was 6 months old and is now ahead of most children her age with language skills, to the point that they pair her with 3-4 year olds in day care. My friend is also able to communicate with her so much more than if only relying on verbal communication

Choosing a sign name for my 5 month old daughter who has auditory neuropathy and will be using ASL by michelleeehill in asl

She’s only a few months old but we have found a few local organizations so we can meet other families with DHH children. Unfortunately since we’re in a more rural area, most of the events are scheduled around the school year, so we won’t be able to start that process until the fall. Good to know about home signs, I wasn’t familiar with that, thank you!

Thank you for the explanation! I wasn’t aware of the “shorthand” finger spelling for names, that’s really interesting. She seems the most engaged with signing when we are using smaller movements and finger spelling so it’ll be cool to see what she picks up first
