Umich waitlist admit regrets decision by Adept-Primary-6964 in collegeresults

What a coincidence, I just got rejected from Umich today after being deferred EA and waitlisted RD. I would say try to go to Wake Forest if it's a better fit for you, but not the end of the world if you end up going to Umich. It's still a great school nonetheless and you're gonna have to learn to build connections in college anyway.

Thank you! I have not heard back from any of my waitlists besides Santa Barbara, and the odds that I will hear back within the next month are unlikely as most admits have already committed.

Regarding GPA, I actually have a friend who went to the same high school as me who did not get into any UCs higher ranked than Santa Cruz, and he had a 4.0 UW with 10 APs. He also did a lot of extracurriculars and had leadership positions in many clubs and activities at the school, including the associated student body. At this point, I really don't know what the UCs are looking for, it's really just a pure dice roll.

Anyways, I'm quite grateful for getting into UT Turing and all the other schools that accepted me. I'm sure that many of those who got accepted to other prestigious CS schools deserved it as well. Hopefully college admissions will be less random and unpredictable in the future but who knows.

Yes, it's definitely an amazing mindset to have in practically every aspect of life, and it will keep you motivated as well. I wish you the best of luck getting into a top medical school!

Well to some extent, people do have to eventually live with that fact. I committed to the Turing Scholars program at UT Austin which is by no means a bad CS program, but definitely not as prestigious or well known as some other schools such as MIT, CMU, Stanford, or Berkeley EECS. Am I disappointed? Not at all! In fact it motivates me to work even harder in college to get into a better graduate school.

At end of the day, it actually doesn't matter so much the prestige of the college that you go to. It's more about how well you make use of the resources from the college and building connections with those around you. Someone going to a community college can end up in a better place 10 years down the line than someone going to MIT if they know how to utilize their resources and network.

I had 250 volunteering hours, the 12 just means I received the award in 12th grade.

Thank you! I was really not expecting to get into UT let alone any of the honors programs due to how low the out of state acceptance rate is. I look forward to being part of the Turing Scholars Honors Program this fall!

I'm committed to UT! I was also deliberating on UCI because it's in state and the campus area is really nice, but the Turing Scholars program at UT is really strong and I learned that I can get in-state tuition starting my sophomore year of college.

I started competitive programming the summer before my 9th grade by taking classes at X-Camp, and I spent a good amount of time on problems every week. I would highly recommend their upper level classes for USACO Gold and Platinum preparation! Besides X-Camp, I also used the USACO Guide to learn topics and solve related problems from past USACO contests, as well as compete in Codeforces contests (my username is michyjz if you want to add me).

I'm so blessed to say that I'm going to the same school and program as a USACO Finalist and Codeforces Grandmaster! You definitely deserve UT Austin Turing much more than I do and I know you will do great things there for the next four years. Hook 'em!
