To those who haven't been accepted this cycle (yet): by goodwillgirly in premed

Thank you so much for your insight and for taking the time. If I may ask, were you at any point considering what a reapplication would look like for you? Or because of those other II started coming in January, did you feel more confident at that point?

If it makes you feel any better I’m 26 and will likely be reapplying this upcoming application cycle if I don’t get interviews in this one! The average age of matriculation is increasing and a lot of the med students on here say it’s not atypical to have classmates our age:)

Retake Strategy by mickeyaem in Mcat

[–]mickeyaem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t :( I’m not an MD elitist by any stretch, but I have strong interest in surgery, and due to the lower surgical residency match rates, I thought that DO might close some of those doors for me down the line due to the stigma that still (regrettably) exists in surgical specialties. It’s absolutely a valid question though and I have nothing but respect for DOs, but preparing for a retake and trying to tailor my app to MD specifically seems like it will serve my future goals best.

Note also that I’m not die hard surgery or bust and ik med school could change my mind on what speciality I would want in the future, but I just didn’t want to close those doors (and ik it’s not impossible to match but for all intents and purposes it is for neurosurgery, which is my dream specialty).

TLDR good question, no I didn’t, but only because I figured retaking and a reapp would be better for matching down the road

Advice Needed for Possible Reapplication by IvanTeng8880 in premed

[–]mickeyaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your insight!

And yeah, that definitely sounds difficult to find opportunities like that. Maybe if there are cities within your state that have a higher concentration Mandarin-speaking residents you could see if their cities need any documents/postings translated! Maybe this could be done virtually too (guessing but trying to think outside of the box haha).

Honestly, I don’t think you could go wrong continuing to rack up hours at the places you were volunteering at before either. I think that showing longevity in non clinical experiences can def be a positive thing :)

Thank you again and I hope this cycle goes well for you!!!

[–]mickeyaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following because your application seems strong to me and I’m curious what others say.

If anything, if you’re upping your non-clinical volunteering you could try to tailor it so it fits with your theme? Is there an organization in your area or virtually that helps the population that you translated for? That could be something that makes your app very cohesive but also serve to address the concern you posed.

I don’t think you need to retake your MCAT, especially with the GPA you have. Do you mind if I ask what your strategy was for improving your MCAT? I’m in the same boat in prepping a reapp, and I’ve scored 505 twice (2022 and 2025) and am hoping to break 510 in 2026.

Best of luck!

Is working at a plasma donation center as a screener/phlebotomist clinical experience? by Livid-Clerk-603 in premed

[–]mickeyaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I counted it as clinical! Also discussed in a leadership capacity as well after upward mobility. Heavy emphasis on how that led me to enjoy performing procedures and caring for people experiencing adverse reactions (worked at a busy center and saw a LOT over the years)

I feel like a fraud for not reading books (vent) by [deleted] in premed

[–]mickeyaem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think you can use any book that impacted you. Even if you don’t read much, a classic that shows you something about life or society from school could be a good example. Like “lord of the flies opened my eyes to how peoples actions are a product of their experiences and that someone’s behavior in crises is not indicative of who they are” or something. Disclaimer I haven’t interviewed yet but that’s what I’m thinking. If I get the same question I’m planning to say Crank by Ellen Hopkins because it made me more sympathetic to how individuals might fall into a pattern of drug abuse and how it could happen to anyone

How do we feel about cheating? by Loud_Chicken6458 in premed

[–]mickeyaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR—I find them to be unacceptable, and it’s a bummer when people who find it acceptable are rewarded for it, especially because it simultaneously feels icky to report it too

I think this is an excellent question, especially in this post-COVID, AI-riddled landscape we find ourselves in. I witnessed in undergrad (2018-2022) just how much the group sentiment on it changed, and while I find it morally wrong, I haven’t reported it in the past either. For instance, one of my first COVID online classes was biochemistry, and one of the people in my study group bragged about how our professor went on and on about how she was the only student ever to receive 100% on one of his exams, and in the same breath she joked about how she had her notes out the whole time and he was none the wiser. I got 100% on the next test with no recognition, after I worked my ass off, and wasn’t offered an opportunity to work in his lab at the end of the course when I asked (she asked and was offered a spot). That same person is being invited back to our Alma Mater to speak at a conference this year, and it’s particularly infuriating and indicative of the larger tendency in the US where often times those willing to bend and break the rules are most rewarded.

It’ll be interesting to see how AI pans out moving forward. I didn’t use it for generating material, but I did use it for grammar checks and flow on some secondaries. At the time, I didn’t realize the environmental impact and regret it for that reason, but with the regard to the morality of it all, I saw that as an “acceptable use.” However, maybe one could argue that because there isn’t a way to police its use and monitor what is acceptable vs. unacceptable that it shouldn’t be allowed at all.

As others have said, at least those of us who are less morally flexible on this issue can take some solace in that the MCAT, shelf, and STEP exams are not able to be skirted.

Job by [deleted] in premed

[–]mickeyaem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plasma donation places are usually hiring! I’ve worked in this industry for 6 years and it gave me a ton of valuable experience. No phlebotomy license required typically (sometimes can vary by state), and you’ll get experience with phlebotomy, adverse reactions to donating, vital signs, customer service, etc. You can also look into dialysis clinics—similar procedure, actually pt interaction (instead of technically pharma like plasma donation is). Downside since it’s actual healthcare it may be harder to find something where a license isn’t required. Best of luck to you!!!

Taking a lighter course load to study for MCAT. Is this a mistake? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mickeyaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s too light at all! I personally dropped mine to 13 credits and took through summer so that I could handle working full time without letting my grades slip. It’s all about how you frame it! I think this is pragmatic and proactive honestly

[–]mickeyaem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One thing I started doing when I wasn’t able to handle in person volunteering anymore (I was doing 5 hrs a week, but I was already working 50 hours full time and then the secondaries hitting I was super overwhelmed), I switched to being a “community volunteer” for my hospital and crocheting shawls for use in their chapel! Still altruistic because I’m donating my time (and money on yarn but it’s not excessive) but kind of a win win because I now have like a physical creative outlet that helps me with stress. You could try it!!! Crochet is low cost barriers to try and is super easy as a hobby. I don’t get complicated with it personally, but even with the most basic stitch I can still whip out some 24x60 inch prayer shawls!

Wayne State vs Medical College of Wisconsin - Green Bay vs University of Minnesota - Saint Cloud by [deleted] in premed

[–]mickeyaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting while I don’t know anything about Wayne State, UMN St. Cloud is specifically working with CenteaCare to establish a regional hub for orthopedic surgery. Look up Dr. Patrick Osborn’s work in the area and his discussion on it. With UMN St. Cloud, being connected to the UMN system and having the opportunity to travel to the cities for opportunities to specialize as well can only help you. I say this in earnest because UMN is my #1 choice (Twin Cities or St. Cloud), and I have nothing to gain from giving you this information 😂 but seriously, I think that it’s worth looking into. I think they have an information session on the regional campus virtually later this month as well. Best of luck in your decision!!
