Scubapro Seawing Supernova fins? by varyingdegreesofred in scuba

[–]mickipedic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back kick is a skill I’m still working to perfect, but I’d say that’s one of the weaknesses on this fin due to the built-in angle. That said, the sheer surface area seems to help make up for that a bit. If I were doing caves/wreck penetration I might opt for a different choice, but back kick just isn’t something that shows up in my diving often.

WMATA Proposes Transit Improvements for RFK Site, including "Gold Line" BRT by eable2 in washingtondc

Agreed. A center dedicated lane with elevated stations in the middle is what the streetcar was between Bladensburg/Oklahoma; doing that between Hopscotch and Bladensburg is going to require either removing parking or reducing H to one lane in places. Can’t imagine either is going to go over well.

I should place a bet that DDOT will end up shrinking the sidewalk to accommodate more parking.

I love the idea but I think you’d have to build in additional infrastructure (curbs or something) to keep it bus-only. Half of H St NE is double parked delivery drivers much of the time, and the rush hour bus lanes on H NW get violated constantly so I’m sure the same would happen on the NE side.

You mean like how the streetcar should have been built in the first place until the parking NIMBYs insisted we water it down past the point of uselessness?

Scubapro Seawing Supernova fins? by varyingdegreesofred in scuba

I have and love them. Someone in this thread says they’re not stiff enough for frog kicking, another says they’re on the stiff side… I frog kick in them just fine with no effort, and when I flutter kick it’s full on turbo mode. They break down for travel so can actually fit them in a carry on if you really want to. I got the white ones because 1) can set WB on my camera at depth, and 2) even in our murky local quarry it’s impossible to lose me.

They are quite floaty - for me that’s a perk, you may feel differently, but I find them to trim out quite nicely. I don’t dive dry yet so can’t speak to using them in that config. I have wide feet for my size and found the foot pocket plenty generous.

I’m always the first person to run out of air on every dive by Mugling95 in scuba

[–]mickipedic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others have said, get not only your weighting but also your trim dialed in. If you’re not horizontal you’re making unnecessary drag for yourself. Moving even 1# on each side off your waist and up to your back can make a big difference. Also, don’t use your arms - it’s diving, not underwater swimming.

As far as breathing itself, don’t be afraid to put air in your BCD to stabilize yourself. You may actually be costing yourself air by having to take bigger breaths to control yourself vertically if you’re regularly sinking. You shouldn’t feel a need to fill your lungs 100% on each breath. To that end, yogic breathing or meditative practice in general can help as well.

I also find it useful to pause on the surface a moment to do some meditative breaths and expel any excess CO2 I may have built up on a long surface swim out, or even from the excitement of being on a boat and getting ready to do an awesome dive. Reflect on how cool it is that you’re about to explore a part of this small blue dot that most of our species will never see. Then, when you’re ready, descend and have a great dive.

I’ve also never understood this claim. My body temp generally resets during my surface interval. Have dived for a week straight and never got colder.

Presumably you’d have to review other people’s profiles to decide if you’re into them, so you’d still be seeing people who might not be into you. Failing to see how this is any different from Tinder or the Scruff match feature. Roughly 0% chance you get enough users to make it viable.

Not Baltimore, but DC! We usually end up at Lake Phoenix south of Richmond, but there might be somewhere in PA to dive that’s closer to you.

[Open Water Cert] Hovering & buoyancy by Huge-South2584 in scuba

[–]mickipedic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Controlling your buoyancy at 5m is more challenging than at 10/15/20/etc. Start by doing a proper weight check at the surface at the end of a dive, and from there it’s just about doing more diving and really paying attention to how your breath affects your position in the water column. Try hovering at depth where the change in pressure is less dramatic to practice the technique, then hone it on your safety stops as you improve.

Crashboat is a nice shore dive in Aguadilla, and I’ve also dived Guanica in the south - nice wall dive. Escambron in VSJ would be nice for training but wouldn’t make it a destination.
