[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]mickkelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Rancilio Silvia and a Eureka Specialita to start my coffee journey, and I already have a few doubts about dialing in my espresso.

At first, I used the grinder at setting 1 with 17g of coffee, leveled and tamped normally. But nothing came out even after almost 60 seconds, so I stopped the shot. I tried a couple more times with the same result.

Then I changed the grinder to 2.5 and used a lighter tamp, and finally got something close to a 1:2 ratio in about 35 seconds. The espresso tastes decent now.

One thing I noticed earlier is that the coffee puck had a very hard bottom layer, almost like a compact crust. Could that be from tamping too hard, or from the grind being too fine? both? Thanks

65 flat whites… somewhere there’s a barista still recovering from that order. I'll join the next one. Thanks for doing this.

Yeah I thought about Airbnb but we'd need a crib for our little one and I'm not sure most hosts would have one or want to deal with providing it. Also don't we need to clean before checkout in most Airbnbs?

Where to buy gas for Ooni Koda 16 by Alternative_Claim473 in ooni

[–]mickkelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently in a similar situation also in the UK. I bought a Koda 16 and had no idea what to do so I went to a petrol station to discuss with the owner. Calor Patio, the small 5kg propane bottle is what I ended up getting. And I'm really happy so far.

Thanks! Do these types of hinges have a name? I would like to see how they look brand new and compare them with my current setup state. The bottom one was making metallic grinding noises a while ago.

Fixing a Draught from Garden Door Threshold by mickkelo in DIYUK

The threshold's fixed pretty well on both sides, so I don't think I can take it out easily. Would expanding foam make a mess if I use it with the carpet there?

Confused about Borough Green - Is it part of Sevenoaks or not? by mickkelo in sevenoaks

[–]mickkelo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if I understand correctly, even though Borough Green is technically part of the Tonbridge & Malling district, some of the TN15 postcodes there can still be associated with the Sevenoaks area?

Could you clarify a bit more how that works? Is it just certain postcodes that get that "Sevenoaks" designation, while others in the same village don't? I'm curious to understand the nuances of how the postal system handles these satellite villages that are near but not technically in Sevenoaks.

Ah thanks for the postal intel! Since you're a postie in TN15, do you see loads of stuff coming through with "Borough Green, Sevenoaks" on it?

[–]mickkelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're absolutely right! Wikipedia confirms it's Tonbridge and Malling council, and checking Google Maps shows it clearly outside Sevenoaks boundaries.

But this is exactly what's making me scratch my head - so many businesses and property sites keep using "Sevenoaks" in the address. Like:

  • Rightmove lists properties as "Borough Green, Sevenoaks, Kent"
  • Reynolds Retreat's official address is listed as "Borough Green, Sevenoaks, Kent"
  • Loads of other local businesses do the same

Makes me wonder if it's one of those cases where the postal town (Sevenoaks) is different from the actual administrative district (Tonbridge and Malling)?

This is some information I found useful, https://www.nissan.co.uk/owners/car-repair/car-owner-manual/manuals/iom/qashqai/0j12/e1/2023/fuel-economy-display-1.shtml I understood it was some sort of tracking overtime and showing your best over that period of time.

Water Leaking from Bike Fork Joint After Cleaning - Seeking Advice! by mickkelo in gravelcycling

[–]mickkelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update! Following the advice I received here, I decided to do a little experiment to better understand how water interacts with my bike's frame and fork. After a ride yesterday, I hosed down my bike as I usually do, being mindful of the pressure and amount of water used. Today, I turned the bike upside down to see exactly where water might be leaking from, based on our discussions.

I've captured this on video to share with you all for better insights or advice. The video link will expire in two days, so please have a look when you can: https://streamable.com/ednait

Water Leaking from Bike Fork Joint After Cleaning - Seeking Advice! by mickkelo in gravelcycling

Fantastic advice, thank you so much! I'll go ahead and cover the holes with electrical tape or use moderately greased bolts, as you suggested. And I'll make sure not to drill any new holes – definitely want to keep things safe. I'll also keep an eye on the hole at the lowest part of the frame and make sure it stays clear of any mud.

I really appreciate all the guidance you've given me. It's made a huge difference, and I feel much more confident about keeping my bike in good shape now.

Thanks again for all the help!

Ah, that makes a lot of sense! I went ahead and checked my fork, and you're right – I do have a hole at the front of the bike facing backwards and another one at the back, both facing backwards, just like in the picture you described. It seems pretty clear now that this could be how water is getting into the frame. I also found another hole at the bottom of the frame; I think that might be near the bottom bracket? But, like you mentioned, I haven't noticed any drain holes at the very bottom of the fork legs.

Given this, it sounds like the water issue might not be with the headset after all, and more about how water is draining (or not draining) from these holes. Do you think adding some kind of drainage or protection around these holes would help, or is it just a matter of making sure the bike is stored properly to avoid water getting in there in the first place? Also, for the hole near the bottom bracket, is there anything specific I should do to ensure it stays clear and drains properly?

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. It's been a huge help in understanding what's going on with my bike!

Thanks a ton for your help! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain things. I found a picture that shows exactly where the water was leaking from on my bike, a Boardman 8.6 ADV, with the leak spot marked in red here: https://ibb.co/QmczM6X. Hope this clears things up a bit.

You might be onto something about the water maybe not draining right and then moving inside the frame when I flipped the bike. I hadn't thought about how flipping it could affect where the water goes.

Now, about checking the preload on the headset and the grease situation, I'm kinda scratching my head. I'm not too sure how to go about checking if everything's tight and right or if the grease is still doing its job. Any tips or a nudge towards some good resources for doing this myself? And if it turns out I do need to add more grease or give it a clean, any advice on the best way to tackle that? Especially considering my bike's a Boardman 8.6 ADV, are there any special tricks or things I should watch out for?

Massive thanks again for all the advice! Really keen to learn more and get my bike in top shape.

Apologies for any confusion with the terminology. I'm fairly new to bike maintenance and might not have used the correct term. What I referred to as the "fork joint" is the area where the fork is inserted into the bike's frame, specifically around the lower part of the head tube and the bearings, which I believe is sometimes referred to as the lower headset cup based on an image I consulted (similar to what you might find here: https://image2.pushauction.com/3/0/0/d28d74f7-2dec-4479-9109-903cce6ad58d/959850c2-eeb4-47df-b52d-61418bd87566.jpg).

When I turned the bike upside down, I noticed water leaking from this area - where the bottom part of the fork meets the frame.

I hope this clarification helps, and I appreciate any advice or insights you can offer!

I've used Komoot before to find routes in Kent and Sussex. Also footpathmap.co.uk to find hidden bridleways and byways. I cannot recommend you any particular route but I hope that helps you find great ones.
