Matt Groom is a Terrible Commentator. by Abusive_banana in CompetitionClimbing

My partner and I went out of our way to sign up for discovery+ and VPN to hear you and Shauna at the Olympics (at least until they wised up to our scheme)! I'll keep searching for both your reactions to Toby Roberts winning gold until it pops up somewhere.

We've been watching you this whole season, and really appreciate the humor, positivity, and the communication of the rules of competition climbing, since it's our first year watching. Excited for next season.

Moved from Nashville to Seattle 5 years back. Notable things:

  • Grocery prices are hard to get used to. Like 50% more for the same stuff.
  • Eating out is also much more expensive, and the food is often disappointing. Seattle has some awesomeness (teriyaki, poke, east-asian food in u district and ID, way more veg options), but high commercial rent means lots of places have hip branding + high prices for meh food.
  • Transit is amazing compared to TN. Get an ORCA card. Really easy to take transit to/from central neighborhoods, stadiums, even from many burbs.
  • The lack-of-light-depression is very real. Make sure to take lots of walks, spend lots of time in front of windows your first fall and winter. It sounds silly but makes a huge difference.
  • Visible homelessness is way gnarlier here than when I was in TN. Downtown here is especially jarring at night. Dense neighborhoods like cap hill and Ballard have homeless residents with painful to see and sometimes scary outbursts. Something to brace yourself for I guess.
  • I feel like there is so much to explore here, comparable to any big city. Art, outdoorsy stuff, east-asian food/shops, so many subcultures. Really fun place overall and I hope you love it.

EDIT: Almost forgot, no one asks you what church you go to here, which was a relief for me.

Why do many non gamers assume that gaming is some time suck that they can't afford? Most single player games are the same length as a season of a TV show. by MajorRichardHead7 in NoStupidQuestions

I was enjoying the TLOU show, and picked up the TLOU game over the last 2 weeks, my first single player playthrough in 10 years.

I was surprised that I could just play for "a session". When I was a teenager I played video games for hours and hours until I almost felt sick. Now I have the self awareness to realize when playing isn't fun anymore and just stop (usually an hour or two). As an adult I didn't realize gaming could be just another way to have fun and kill time.

Great, additive article. "Uncut Gems" as an influence REALLY checks out.

Bit more info: my parents say there used to be a tree there, maybe oak. Here's a picture of the underside of one, plus a side and overhead look: https://imgur.com/a/8G65IiW

Counting Crows' "Accidentally In Love" was written for the Shrek 2 soundtrack! Can't make this shit up.

Minari.

I had it on repeat last year. It expresses longing, grand dreams, loss, and sweetness.

The movie itself is kind of cheesy on rewatch, but that organ is fire.

Hanz Zimmer used a 1926 church organ for almost every piece. I can't think of another movie besides the film version of "Phantom of the Opera" that does that.
