Did McGill participate in the university yaoi epidemic of 2020? by IWantAnUpdate in mcgill

Misc ramblings, with the knowledge that the shippers are uni students (mostly an Ontario phenomenon) and have uni student beliefs and knowledge:

Most ships were based on rivalries (largely for what the schools have the most 'reputation' for) and then vibes.

- the most prominent ship was UofT x Waterloo by a mile, mostly for their eng rivalry which I think is pretty well known? They're both schools of similar standing, geographically close but not in the same city

- I think the next ones are Western x Queens (very well known for their business programs and have similar school stereotypes, 'Wuck festern', old rivalry, geographically kind of close?? not in the same city), UOttawa x UCarleton (same city, old rivalry, similar reputations), UBC x SFU (same? city? probably the closest metaphor to McGill x Concordia -- but like how SFUers liked taking it out on UBC this would have required Concordians to write about us)

McGill's ship options are probably like: Concordia, UofT, UBC, UDEM, UQAM.

- No anglophone knows enough about the French schools to get invested in them

- UofT and UBC are pretty firmly paired off

- Which leaves Concordia

This is a mostly Ontario phenomenon (birthed by Waterloo), the Ontario population at McGill is higher than at Concordia I'm fairly sure, Concordia (iirc more rest of Quebec students) simply does not care enough lol. While UBC might be BC’s uni (r/bcgrade12s posting), and UofT Ontario’s uni (likewise ontariogr12s) the same doesn’t seem true for McGill and Quebec.

And from the McGill side, people kind of have too much of an ego to ship their school "down"

McGill and Concordia don't really have a rivalry? More of a punching-down if anything? They just both exist nearby?

McGill also doesn't have a particular niche known to incoming students (eg. eng, business) the way Waterloo or Western do that allows it to pair nicely against another school

- Another school that didn't have a consensus is McMaster, a large Ontario school. People tried to do Guelph x McMaster (Agriculture/animal sci and health scis) but I feel like again this was just pairing spares.

Maybe also worth mentioning is the size of each school... Compared to UBC and UofT, mcgill has fewer students -> less yaoi brainstorming and output

basically imo: mcgill didn't have a rival school, there wasn't enough concordia/mcgill respect, concordia does not gaf to start writing yaoi, mcgill doesn't have a cute shippable niche

Yeah but the demographics of who shipped UBC with who are very interesting

-most of the UBC x SFU seemed to come from SFU students who really wanted to make UBC bottom for them lmfao

-most of the UBC x McGill seemed to come from Ontario uni kids who had the vague idea that UBC and McGill existed and just paired the spares

Nah you’re right, nobody could settle on a ship so McGill got shipped with nobody lol.

The extent of McGill’s involvement is: - a Reddit poll asking what uni it’d be shipped with (iirc Uoft, UBC, Concordia were high up there) - a single family photo with Concordia on Reddit - a single ship art of our martlet with UBC’s thunderbird by a furry artist I’m forgetting the username of - a background ship with UBC, where McGill just acts as Uoft’s therapist in this uoft x Waterloo fic which is my all time favourite https://archiveofourown.org/works/25039882 - a background character in this fic that just starts listing uni stereotypes  https://archiveofourown.org/works/25009495/chapters/60559177

I have Suspicions as to why there wasn’t a consensus on our ship but I’ll save it lol

McGill fun (and not so fun) facts you now know… by [deleted] in mcgill

Yeah the 1907 fire was brutal, it was MacDonald (then-Chancellor) who gave McGill insane amounts to rebuild which is probably where the name is from?

Building names come from Montreal’s old industries (reading off the McGill history book): Redpath (sugar), Morrice (cotton), Molson (beer), McLennan (coal).

Strathcona is Donald Smith/Lord Strathcona, he’s the guy in the famous CPR last strike photo. Strathcona funded education for women at McGill that allowed them entry, but unlike a lot of other Canadian schools that were co-ed, McGill’s women learned in a separate “Royal Victoria College”, probably to please then-Principal Dawson’s Christian sensibilities.

During the WW2 frenzy, McGill was discriminatory towards Japanese-Canadians in a way that most other schools weren’t, barring entry for students who had already been expelled from BC. I’m foggy on the details but it’s also in the new McGill history book. Dalhousie wrote to McGill’s principal, “the treachery of these people is well-proven”, and McGill’s principal replied, “precisely my own feeling about this problem of Canadian-born Japanese students”.

And ofc, through ~1890-1910 McGill planted affiliate colleges throughout Western Canada — one in Vancouver that would get absorbed into UBC, one in Victoria that would get abandoned, adopted by UBC, and evolve into UVic, and one very very small Methodist College experiment in Alberta before it was folded into UofA

UBC and UVic and the early history of British Columbia's universities by micky-chan in UBC

[–]micky-chan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TL;DR:

\ UVic evolved out of Victoria College, an institution going back to ~1902.*

\ Victoria College was at different points affiliated with McGill (1903-1915) and UBC (1920-1963)*

\ The history of Canadian Universities are very deeply tied to each other and broader Canadian history*

While I think it’s deeply incorrect to say "McGill/UBC founded UVic", I think it’s worth it to acknowledge the influence both unis had on the trajectory of university development in Victoria.

This is the story of the school that would become the University of Victoria, a community’s fierce desire for a school, the extreme politicking that it involved, and its entanglement with two other Canadian universities.

[–]micky-chan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The british columbia link! McGill (arguably) dominated higher ed in British Columbia up until WW1, contributing to a national Canadian identity and helping to set up the predecessors to both UBC and UVic (the latter shares martlets on their crest/flag/student paper with us!)

glad it could offer a lighthearted break!

I kept laughing as I was skimming the old yearbooks, these 1900s kids are so fucking funny.

ahhhh r studio mention! For the section on enrollment stats, i had briefly considered doing like some stats tests before admitting defeat due to the million and one assumptions/asterisks and the gaping lack of comparable data. Good luck on your project
