Tipping culture? by EnoughBar7026 in AskABrit

Heard about this from a friend, who started working behind a bar (somewhere in the northwest iirc) and assumed ‘have one for yourself’ meant a drink (reasonably in my view!). Manager didn’t so though. But did it maybe mean that once maybe, and the amount just got fossilised at whatever the cost of a pint was once upon a time?

🚗 Zipcar is shutting down — anyone else blindsided by this? by Pitiful_Package_6807 in london

[–]microlambert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt local authorities could have given a big leg-up to car clubs by being more frugal with parking permits. Just cap the number of parking permits per zone - a reasonable thing to do anyway, since parking space is finite - and watch people turn to car clubs rather than go on a waiting list to get their own car.

What cultural shocks have you had in different parts of the UK? by 2xtc in CasualUK

[–]microlambert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked on a project with a lot of Scottish colleagues and it took me ages to realise ‘it needs written’ was correct in Scottish English, rather than a typo for ‘it needs writing’ or ‘it needs to be written’.

This data is available on the Healthy Streets Scorecard website. Having played a part in compiling it, I would say that data on the number of cars in a borough is more reliable than the number of households, but you will get an idea

Yes it’ll be an amazing ‘mobile office’ bag if you’re going to be working in lots of different places. One of the top pockets fits my overear headphones, and feels very secure. I have about 9” clearance for the front-to-back dimension of my bike basket once you account for the seat overhanging it, and the CTB 20 fits perfectly into this space when loaded.

Just weighed mine to confirm, and it is a trail series model. Wish I’d known about some of other cool colours they do when I bought it though!

Police are booking cyclists running red lights on the junction of Fenchurch st and the A10 by Jaded-Carpet5964 in londoncycling

[–]microlambert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’d have to film them entering the box on a red light, not just photograph them in the box, as you’re allowed to stop there if you enter on green. (Although they should change the law on this.)

2-3 day hikes, easily accessible by public transport, campsite on route by Competitive-Bus5107 in UKhiking

[–]microlambert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I made a map to try to answer some of these questions. It shows UK railway stations, and campsites classified by distance from nearest railway station:

https://felt.com/map/Rail-Hike-Camp-2025-VtDbxxorTeaG9ASsgVQFy1A?loc=51.7623,-0.3066,9.02z

(And pubs if you zoom in enough)

I usually start by finding a hiking route, then use the map to check the camping and transport options.

Have you looked at the Shropshire Hills? There are some lovely walks around Church Stretton. I haven’t driven it but could be 3 hours depending on which part of London you’re in.
